DBD Labor Day Weekend 1st Game Reaction Post

The Hombre wrote a great post here, which I think can be a good place for dumping of links.  There will be probably many, many many post-game wrap links and other items of interest from around these here intertubes.  So, to help keep the FanPost section clean for items of longer analysis, like Danzig's post, we can use this for a weekend DBD.  I'll even start off:

Okanes article on Sean Young.

"I told him during pregame at stretch that this is what he's been waiting for for six years," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. "He had a great camp. It's nice to see him contribute to the team."

A series of injuries led to Young amassing just three career catches coming into the season. Young was the Bears' most consistent receiver during training camp and simply continued that production Saturday night.

Enjoy the post-game analysis done by The Hombre and others.  I, for one, am surprised at how well The Hombre did with 10 beers in him.  But if you have some other links, we can put them in here, too.  Dump away!  GO BEARS!

1. Riley was amazing. He does things that you can't teach. He's special and there really is no way to quantify that.

2. Vereen and Best are both special. We've been blessed.

3. Normally the offense comes along slower than the defense so that might be initially discouraging. Still, I like the 3-4, Syd reminds me of Delta O'Neill. I think the defense will come along and will be great. Our linebackers are a wrecking crew.

4. Our receivers are green but receivers can develop faster than any other position on the field. I think we'll be fine.

5. I feel bad for Nate. When he got in the game he showed that he has the better arm. The problem was that it seemed like he felt he had to prove too much and made mistakes. Nate got his chance and it didn't work out. For a moment he showed prominence, and for that I give credit to everyone who defended Longshore. When he's at the top his game from a raw talent standpoint he's better than just about anyone in the country.

6. Cal is under the radar. We play our best from that position. We need to take one week at a time and I think it might be a good thing if we aren't ranked next week.

7. I've had ten beers. Please excuse any errors. Wish I could be in Berkeley tonight! Go Bears!

The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Anger. Wow. Kind of reminds me of Jose Canseco HRs. They go up and then they just get small.

Riley. Wow. He had that play against Air Force where he completed a 25 yard pass while he was being tackled. You thought. Wow. I’ll never see that again. Wrong. 4th quarter to seal the game. Just fucking wow.

Receivers. Agreed. Work in progress.

Best. Wow.

Defense. Pretty darned good.

Special teams need work.

Kickers ?

I was sitting with the most obnoxious loud crude assholes you’d ever meat. It was great.

You won’t be truly vindicated until the end of the season (remember Nate plays well at the beginning as well)… but for now, I gotta say that Riley has the skills to be better than Longshore. The jury is still not out, but the evidence is starting to mount.

Much love Brother Danzig ...

but just I can’t recall right now whether you are on my Louisiana Hot Links dog list. But I checked the CGB Hall of Fame post and why yes, you, Rags and Fever will all be donating a dog to the Olsonist. Oh so tasty! Now you can get it over sooner or you can stretch out the payments; it’s all the same to me. But I will say that I’m really a terrible winner. Extra sauce please.

I just got back a few minutes ago.

Best was a beast: 277 all-purpose yards. He was great in all positions out there.

Everyone loved Riley, and with good reason: he played fantastically. His ability to complete passes under heavy pressure is remarkable.

Our receivers have potential, but need to pull in those passes. Despite their collective inexperience, they played decently.

Our defense was great. For a long period in the first half, we held MSU from getting any first downs. To be able to hold Ringer to 81 yards spoke tremendously about our run defense. I was disappointed by the lack of QB pressure, though. I was hoping they would have worked more on that in the offseason. They gave up a lot of passing yards, especially the relatively short range (10-15 yds). Some of the defense’s faults with passing were completely excusable, though. Some crucial momentum killers (two interceptions called off and that roughing the kicker penalty) seemed to discourage everyone, especially the defense. Syd was the man, though. He had a lot of great plays. It has been great to see him develop over the years.

Nate’s first pass was beautiful. His next one was okay. The next two were intercepted. I really wanted to see him perform like he did in 2006, but he’s right where he left off in 2007. I hope he can redeem himself in the next game or two (if he’s put in).

I’m glad we have three games against cupcakes to get some of the kinks worked out before we play ASU.

Some of those short pass plays are hard to defend, also, like the timing routes, outs, etc.

Yeah, I really feel bad for Nate because he’s always shown he needs to, “get into rhythm” for one or two series… so putting him into the game ad-hoc was not playing to his tendencies/strengths… but realistically he threw that second INT into triple coverage. THe first one, he was looking off first so the Spartans got lucky there.

"Wrong danzig, YOU KNEW Longshore threw that first pick on purpose, he saw that guy, he knew what was going to happen!!! He is a traitor and should be hung!!!

Riley is the Virgin Mary. Kiss his feet."

Thank you for starting this post-game reaction thread. But now we have one up in the stories section, so we can all use that one to discuss the game. And look at Seth’s stunning melt down with amusement.

Here is an article from Rivals on Riley:

BERKELEY, Calif. – A play-fake caused the Michigan State defense to flow right as California quarterback Kevin Riley rolled out to the left.

Riley looked downfield. He saw one receiver covered. Then another. Finally, he cocked his strong right arm and hurled the football about 40 yards.

Kevin Riley threw for two touchdowns and was efficient in the Bears’ win.
And waaaaay out of bounds.

In response, the majority of the 62,956 paying customers inside Memorial Stadium, and a couple of hundred freeloaders up on Tightwad Hill, roared approval.

Never has an incomplete pass caused such a stir.

Olsonist posted this sweet article on Joe Igber, but I thought it couldn’t hurt to repost it here where it’s not buried in 100 other comments:

Joe Igber tried to attend a Cal practice last week.

When confronted by a security guard at the fence surrounding Memorial Stadium, Igber eloquently stated his case for admission, probably being too humble to explain that he’s the school’s fourth-leading rusher of all time.

He was turned away.

“I always knew that a month or two after my career, when people returned to their daily grinds, I’d slowly fade away,” Igber said. "I never expected my efforts on the field to be exalted when I was seen on campus.

Okanes says Cal answered its lingering questions from the offseason.

Yes, tailback Jahvid Best can handle a heavy workload throughout all four quarters.
Yes, the Bears defense can be effective against a power running game in its new 3-4 alignment.
Yes, Kevin Riley is the starting quarterback.

The QB controversy came to a rather unpleasant end.

Asked about it, Riley paused for several seconds, no doubt trying to decide how to present the situation to those outside the program.
“I don’t think it’s really respectful of the fans to boo one of our players,” he finally said. “Nate went in there and played well. They don’t even know what happened on the (interceptions). He’s a teammate, a friend. He went in there and did his best. Things didn’t work out the way he wanted them to. That’s about it.”

Very well said by Riley, many more props to him for being a stand-up dude. Beyond this, Longshore is one hit away from starting at any moment and we need to show him love.

How long does it take for a mole hole to heal? It seems like Riley’s been wearing that pirate’s patch for a loooong time.

I think it’s healed, but he realized that certain chicks (including some that post on CGB!) dig the lucky 13 patch.

Interesting reaction to the game from Spartan blog

http://groundzeroeastlansing.blogspot.com/

Overall, this game still could’ve been won by MSU if the special teams executed properly. Take away the punt return for a touchdown and add in the field goal that Swenson missed, and Michigan State wins 34-31. All told though, Cal deserved to win this game – even though they had their share of mistakes too (the punt going through the punter Anger’s fingers, the roughing the punter call that kept a touchdown drive alive for MSU), they were the most composed team on the field. The 3-4 played more like a 5-2, and the inside linebackers stuffed most anything that came their way.

Kyle Reed does well in his San Jose State debut

recap here.

he didn’t start, but came on late to throw to touchdowns passes, beating UC Davis 13-10. he was the Spartans’ leading passer (14-18) AND rusher (28 yards on 7 carries, though 20 came of those came on one play).

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
