DBD 8.29.08 Jerry Rice Jr. wants to be a bear...
Jerry Rice Jr. apparently wants to be a lot of things.
Ok, after watching that OSU game yesteray, who else is PSYCHED for MSU tomorrow? Last year, I felt so nervous going into Tennessee. Even though this team seems less talented than last year's squad (on offense at least), I feel a lot calmer. Maybe it is because MSU isn't as hyped a team as Tennessee, I don't know. But man, even though it was just OSU/Stanford, that was an exciting game.
Because it was football! And it counted!
And it had a crazy ending. This might bring back a few memories to you:
Oregon State's Darrell Catchings absorbed a hit from Stanford safety Taylor Skaufel just short of the goal line and fumbled into the Stanford end zone with 57 seconds on the clock. The touchback halted a Beavers comeback and Stanford was able to hang on for a 36-38 win at Stanford Stadium.
via imgs.sfgate.com
Why does the Stanford football team have a cartoonishly oversized deck of cards on the sideline?? This makes no sense?
Well, they are the winner. The winner. The chicken. The dinner.
Let's get to some links:
Women's volleyball looks to have a successful season.
BERKELEY - No. 5 California looks to return to prominence after the most successful season in school-history, advancing to the NCAA semifinals.
THE FACTS: The No. 5-ranked California volleyball team opens the 2008 season by hosting St. John's and UC Santa Barbara, Aug. 29-31, in the Cal Molten Classic at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. The Golden Bears will take on the Red Storm in a 7 p.m. match on Friday (Aug. 29), before facing the Gauchos in a 1 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 31) match. In between, St. John's will tangle up with UC Santa Barbara in a Saturday, (Aug. 30) match at 1 p.m. Live statistics for all three matches will be available via GameTracker and Cal fans can watch the Bears live on the internet via Cal All-Access. Please visit www.CalBears.com for links to stats and video.
Cal is really getting into this blog thing:
BERKELEY - Golden Bear fans who are unable to attend in person can add an extra dimension of information and enjoyment to their football gameday experience with the official in-game blog available via Gametracker on CalBears.com, starting with Saturday's opener vs. Michigan State and continuing with every home football game this season.
Access to the blog is easy and free with an Internet connection. Simply scroll to the schedule section at the bottom of the homepage and click the "Gametracker" link next to the "Football vs. Michigan State" listing. The same can be done from the football schedule area of the website by clicking the "Gametracker" graphic in the right-nav info box.
I feel tired, I think this is a good start. A bunch of link. So, let's dump some more! If you see any Cal-related links, esp. related to football and/or the MSU game, let's dump em here. Dump away! GO BEARS! BEAT THE SPARTANS!
Maybe Nate Montana can xfer from ND and it can be 4th grade pick up football all over again.
Unfortunately Tedford has yet to offer him. Not sure why you wouldn't offer a child star star of his stature. That would be perhaps one of the biggest boosts to Cal recruiting since Desean Jackson. Not by any means, because Rice Jr. is a stand-alone talent (which he has shown signs of), but because it would be a huge draw to other recruits who are.
Given Jerry Sr.'s recent mentorship of Djax and appearances at our pro-days I think it would be a huge mistake not to offer this kid and get him in Blue and Gold.
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Praise be to DBD 8.29.08!!! I’ve always wanted a short DBD that contributes little more than a comment in the previous DBD.

not that it’s not true, but the second link is a two-line article written by a guy named ‘Dougie Fresh’ on a site called ‘Football burrito’, and he misspelled Berkeley.

thanks for the info, though. could be an intriguing prospect to see where he goes. remember, Jerry Rice himself went to a D-II school in Mississippi.

So, Tedford should offer Montana's son just b/c he's the son of a star?
As I recall, he stinks… and he wasn’t highly recruited… just a few D1 schools and mostly DII schools. That’s why he decided to walk on at ND. Am I getting this right?
http://stanford.scout.com/a.z?s=18&p=8&c=1&nid=3341288
http://usc.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=69156
So the only reason we would offer him is for PR value and we’d just bench him anyway? I also happened to watch one of Elway son’s games… and he really sucks.. I mean he was really awful.. threw 3 INTs or something. I don’t remember. I was so happy to see he was going to ASU… he’ll tie that scollie up for 6 years on the bench.
Regardless, offering guys like this HURTS your recruiting because it give the appearance of entitlement and favoritism.
As for Rice’s son, he better be even better than normal because he will shoo away other WR recruits because of the favoritism factor.

I was joking about Montana.
As for Rice Jr. I think it would boost recruiting.
Look at Illinois Basketball with Michael Jordan Jr.
Besides I’ve watched some film on him and Rice Jr. looks like the real deal.

If this will become the 8.29 DBD, then I’ll add these:
JO posts some notes from the final practice.
Walk-on Giorgio Taveccio may take over kickoff duties.
Both Alamar and coach Jeff Tedford said there’s a chance Taveccio will kick against Michigan State. Taveccio kicked the ball deeper than both Jordan Kay and David Seawright on Thursday.
Alamar said he discovered Taveccio at Cal’s kicking camp last summer. He said Taveccio was under the radar because he’s a top soccer player and didn’t attend many of the kicking camps and combines.
Meanwhile, there was good news and bad news for Cal on the injury front. Cornerback Syd’Quan Thompson (sprained shoulder) practiced in full capacity and is ready to go for the opener. But wide receiver Michael Calvin (sprained toe) missed another practice. Tedford said Calvin’s availability will be a gametime decision, but he hasn’t practiced all week and it doesn’t appear likely he will play.
Another notable development on defense: Brett Johnson took the first team reps Thursday at free safety instead of Bernard Hicks. Defensive coordinator Bob Gregory said no decision has been made who will start, but added that he expects both players to get about the same reps in the game. Still, it’s a significant bit of news because Hicks seemed to be a lock to play free safety through the spring and much

and hew was splitting reps with Johnson during the spring. This doesn’t surprise me very much.

it will be something, i’m sure. i’ve got a pair of cal men’s basketball shorts that are autographed by Ben Braun — they’re a limited edition!! no more will be produced, ever!!
we could put them up as a prize, but i doubt very much that many people would want to ‘win’ them.

I couldn’t find many stories about Cal-MSU that aren’t the same “Cal’s receivers are inexperienced but talented” and “How will Cal’s new 3-4 handled Ringer” articles that we’ve all read over and over. But in case you haven’t read enough about Ringer, here’s another article.
The 5-foot-9, 200-pounder packs a load in his lower half.
“My legs are the No. 1 priority on my body,” Ringer said. “That’s how I do basically everything I need to do. My success comes from legs.”
They are the reason he can squat more than 600 pounds and the reason he’s been clocked at 10.6 seconds in the 100-meter dash. They are the reason he rarely goes down on first contact and the reason he’ll offer the ultimate test for Cal in Saturday’s season opener in Berkeley.

OPEN QUESTION
There are more than a few games on Comcast this year…. Does anyone know if these Comcast games ever show up on ESPN Gameplan?
Last year LaTech didn’t show up on my GamePlan package so I watched it with the Cal Alum of NYC at a bar. Anyone ever see any Comcast games on GamePlan?

The court is expected to decide next week whether to lift the injunction preventing the university from beginning construction.
No. There is no longer an injunction to be lifted. That was dissolved by Judge Miller this week. The court will decide whether to impose a new injunction.

So in theory, could we see a rejection of the case by tomorrow? (But more likely it will be 2-3 weeks?)
Is it more likely that the COA will just toss the case? Or hear the case, but not grant a further injunction?

I guess not tomorrow; more like Tuesday.

Well, I guess it is as soon as the AC Court allows. I dont know how long itll take. If they already did a bunch of the work last time around, it might not be a long time. They have 20 days to rule. So, what is that at the latest? September 18?
But what is nice about this situation is the injunction is gone, so when the AC rules, we can get to work (pending the ruling being in our favor).

I liked this line:
Citing increased tension between Cal football fans and the tree-sitters, the university sent a letter to ticketholders this week imploring them to behave civilly around the protesters.
I don’t remember receiving such a letter, though (email or postal mail).

Did anything end up happening with the gold out? None of the people I talked to at Fan Day knew about it. I ask because I will hopefully get my “replithentic” Follett jersey in the mail today or tomorrow and I’ll wear that if I don’t wear my gold #10.
