DBD Special: Cal-Michigan State Previews Everywhere!
We're about 36 hours away from the first kickoffs. Another 48 hours after that, Cal and Michigan State take to the field. Time to light up with Golden Bear previews and projections.
CGB (the site might be familiar to some of you) gets you off to a good start with their roundtable discussion from seven years ago about the Spartans (less stats, more dick jokes by TwistNHook). A little more recently, Hydrotech introduced you to the offensive sets the Spartans run under Dantonio, which can best be described as classically rigid and empirically boring. That this simple motion offense poured on 33 points in the Big Ten might say more about the conference than the team.
Some loser wrote about a long-ass meandering post detailing Michigan State in a way that probably left his readers more confused than they were before reading it. He does note an interesting weakness in Javon Ringer's game.
Despite the all-around talent of Javon Ringer in the open field, in short-yardage situations (especially at the goalline), he struggles just like Forsett did last year. Neither had quite the size (Forsett was a little better, although he was only slightly above the mean) to deal with the much bigger defenses in these constrained situations. Their movement predicated on openness and spreading the defense so they could power their way through the holes. The fact that their numbers dropped back to the field is a discernible weakness, and could be part of the reason why Forsett might be out of Seattle despite a spectacular preseason.
Said loser also did a preview with the Enlightened Spartan over a month or two ago, although it appears more tongue-and-cheek when you read it this time around.
The Bear Will Not Quit does seem to have criticisms about Brian Hoyer's big game ability:
If there is a "knock" against [Hoyer], aside from probably not being a guy who can take over a game, it is that the Spartans have not fared well in big games under his leadership. Most recently, in the Champs Sports bowl last season against #10 Boston College -- Michigan State's first bowl game in 4 years -- Hoyer's stat line was undesirable: 14-36 (38%), 131 yards, 2 TDs, 4 INTs, 1 fumble, 65.77 rating. The Spartans lost 24-21. His passer ratings vs the other "big" opponents last year, #5 Ohio State and #18 Michigan, both losses, were similarly low: 85.77 and 96.65, respectively. Even when he put up his best numbers last season against #24 Wisconsin on the road, the Spartans still lost. I think Hoyer will not lose the game for Michigan State, but I also do not think he can win it for them.
To be fair to Hoyer, he did not perform that badly compared to other quarterbacks against those Buckeye/Wolverine defenses from what I analyzed. You can see in the graph below that Hoyer performed only slightly below average.
The Bear Will Not Quit does have a multi-part preview going this week, check it out as it unfolds.
Okanes will have previews later this week. Just RSS his blog and you'll get your crack at them.
From Michigan mainstream sources, Pat Caputo of the Daily Tribune seems a little more pessimistic about the Spartans players than I was, especially Hoyer.
One has to be Hoyer. He was consistently outplayed by opposing quarterbacks during the final stages of close games last season. The Spartans lost several tight games. That can be good news or bad, depending on whether it was progress keeping games competitive, or a sign the Spartans lack the necessary finishing skills, particularly at QB.
Considering his situational stats, I'm wondering if Hoyer is getting a bad rap; he did bring his team back multiple times and made a game of it more often that not. Then again he probably watched all their games last season, so he probably knows more about them than I do.
Coach Dantonio is more PC about what he thinks of Cal than he was about, say, Michigan. Also some pregame chatter going both ways concerning Bears and Spartans, as both teams try to feel each other out.
On the other side, Enlightened Spartan has a decent gameday preview, and if you look at the numbers side-by-side, you can make a good case for Michigan State coming up with the road upset. Unfortunately the words betray his homerism.
Michigan State's secondary is its best in 10 years. Safety Otis Wiley hits like a ton of bricks and is a stud. MSU is also deep across the board, with lots of starting experinece out of Kendall Davis-Clark, Ashton Henderson, and Ross Weaver. And, we're not even talking about the high praise of Chris Rucker throughout all of camp. Who will MSU cover? Jeremy Ross, Michael Calvin, and LaReylle Cunningham will be Cal's wideout corps, with a combined total of 4 of 266 receptions thrown by Cal QBs last year. Big advantage to MSU here to make a game-changing play and/or lay some wood.
Hits like a ton of bricks? Lay some wood? We are F*CKED.
Of course, numbers lie all the time. Victory4MSU has a nice overview of our team, and he does indicate he'll have his own thoughts on the game this week if he returns to regularly scheduled posting.
Overall the Cal defense looks solid, not spectacular. The run defense should be very good with that linebacker trio and pass defense should be decent. The big question mark is whether the defensive line can step up the pass rush. If the line improves this year, the Bear’s defense will be a major strength.
Fair, balanced, informative, highly journalistic. By contrast, these terms can't possibly describe SpartyMSU.
From what I can read, Berkeley seems to all about the Ugliest Mascot in the WORLD, Tree Huggin, some Dope Smokin, mediocre football, and Tightwad Hill.
Last year Cal was 7 – 6 and 3-6 (Pac Ten), they played Air Force in a Nothing Bowl… Right now, they don’t have a clue who will be behind Center to start for the Golden Bears.. Might be Oski the Bear Mascot for all we know.
The run-on sentences are especially penetrating and backbreaking. I've always wondered what Oski would do against a 4-3. Probably fumble the ball away and start drunkenly tackling linebackers.
Add all the other previews you can find of the Bears, the Spartans, the game, etc. in the comments!
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Victoria’s Sumeet Aujla assisted on Natalie Wise’s strike for Tuesday’s lone goal in the 55th minute.
Cal sophomore forward Natalie Nurnberg and senior defender Carolina Bistue each tallied a shot in the first half, but Williams saved both efforts. Nurnberg and Bistue led the Bears with two shots each for the game.
The Bears also had a 6-4 penalty corners advantage against the Vikes.

Reminder that Women’s Volleyball is starting up on Friday night. I thought that this was the most entertaining of the Olympics sports that most of us never watch.
I honestly thought it was not that entertaining. They are too good. I found few volleys. Just pass set spike. Pass set spike. Pass set spike.

Really? I was fascinated by it. Not in a pervy way. Beach volleyball, bah, but the team game was great.
I’ve always found mediocre volleyball to be better than absurdly good volleyball, because since there are less “HAMMER” spikes, the game flows better. But when each play ends in a spike that is un-defendable, it’s tough to enjoy.

Yes, although I have to pick my battles. Taking away an entire Saturday (esp. one essentially on our 2 year wedding anniversary) puts me in a poor position to say “I’m leaving to go see girls in short shorts jump up and down.”

Okanes’ most recent post is full of delicious nuggets of information including interviews with Tedford, Alex Mack, Jahvid Best, and Zack Follett.
SFGate article on some of the offseason changes (nothing we don’t already know). Some good quotes are in there, though.
And Tedford’s real work starts when the players get off the field. From strategy questions to personal issues, Tedford has dedicated himself to really listening to his players, all in hopes of keeping their heads together when Cal hits the tough times that wrecked what was shaping up as a remarkable season in 2007.
“I’m just going to keep my fingers on the pulse of the group better,” Tedford said. “When I’m not calling the plays, I’ll be able to see a lot more of that, at least I think so. … If you’re willing to learn lessons from it, which I’ve tried to do, then I think we’ll be better for it. You live and learn.”
More on Longshore’s response to Riley being named the starter.
“Nate has been awesome,” Tedford said. "Obviously, the first meeting I had with him, was very disappointing to him. But there is no other person on this team that is dedicated like Nate to team success. He still provides great leadership for Kevin and the offense.
Bits of information from Tedford’s press conference yesterday.
From Okanes article:
The highlight of a conversation with linebacker Zack Follett came after he was asked about the big hit he laid on Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge last season, one that led to a fumble return for a touchdown by Worrell Williams.
"At Fan Appreciation Day, I think every person I saw wanted another hit like that," Follett said. I told them I’d do my best."
Well, now I feel stupid for having told him I stole his wallet. Thank god he didn’t put another hit like that ON ME!

I'm still wondering why the Nets didn't draft Leon Powe.
Ted Miller says Javon Ringer will be a good first test for our 3-4 defense.
“He’s a guy who has great balance, vision and he’s tough,” Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. “He’ll run between the tackles, and you better make sure you rack him up or he can bounce out of there and make some great plays. He’s an elusive guy. It’s going to take gang tackling, it’s hard to bring him down with just one guy.”
“We’re going to get a true test,” Tedford said. “When you line up, they’re not a spread team. You’re playing a downhill, physical football team, we better be ready for it.”
We also don't make any noise
Cal fans: You have been called out. Here’s a question from Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio’s press conference: “Folks from Cal have told us that they’re expecting probably 15,000-16,000 Spartan fans. It’s not traditionally a loud stadium. How do you use that in recruiting?” “Not a traditionally loud stadium.” Ouch.
Tedford demands silence from those that are supposed to get the crowd fired up in a lot of game situations. The shush list includes all offense and a surprising amount of defense. He/we can’t have it both ways.
wut?
I thought he asked us to make all kinds of crazy noise for Oregon and Tennessee.
by CalBandGreat on Aug 27, 2008 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions
For the bulk of defense, yes. Otherwise, he wants it quiet. It’s a neatly defined objective, but it’s tough to pull off with a crowd: Everyone go crazy!!! OK, now everyone shut up.
Oh.
No wonder I’m the loud asshole in my section. It all makes sense now…
by CalBandGreat on Aug 27, 2008 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions
We’re generally talking about defense when we’re tlaking about noise, of course, so it’s sort of a moot point… but there are generally comments about the mic men or the band or the cheerleaders not doing enough to get the crowd fired up in Memorial when often they’re not allowed to do anything anymore than they do. We should be loud on defense, yes.
You could get a job writing over at Sassy Spartan or whatever that blog’s called.
At the Tenn game last year, I was totes liquored up and yelling at my friends for not standing and yelling. It was during defense tho, so I wasn’t too much of an a-hole, but the whole blue section was quiet as a library. wtf?
by CalBandGreat on Aug 27, 2008 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions
Someone thought there would be more cheerleaders this year, maybe things will improve. It’s been disorganized given the uncomfortable combination of newcomers and grumpy blues that used to be able to stretch out and have a picnic. That said, if you’re the only one standing then I don’t like you.

That totes rawks, but what about foozeball? Dagnabbit!
I’m still pissed they didn’t come out last year for the Tennessee game. Instead of a festive, lively atmosphere, they decided to go to a wake. So lame.
At what point this season would they come? If we and Oregon are still undefeated when we meet?

I heard they're coming out for the tree chopping.

I was also very disappointed that Gameday didn’t come out for the Tennessee game. Going to the wake was the TV-ratings-will-he-cry-camera decision, and I don’t think it was the right one.
That said, I totally was going to make a sign for Gameday that said “I cut short my honeymoon in Italy to be here with Gameday!” Wordy, but obsessive. (Actually, I’m the kind of fan who scheduled the wedding and honeymoon with enough time to get back for the first game. I had my cake and football too.) Luckily we saw Gameday in Oregon that year with our sign that said “Thanks for Tedford”.
I really hope the bball version is as exciting.
Sorry Avi I didn't mean to diss you by not realizing that this was a DBD
I read the post but missed the word DBD and posted my info in another thread

Bears will wear Gold for the MSU Game.
Based on my conversation with Nyan Boateng on Facebook Chat that went exactly like this:
Me: Hey Nyan
Me: What Jerseys are you wearing for the game on saturday?
Nyan: Gold
Me: Sweet dude, I’m looking forward to it.
Me: Good Luck
Nyan: Thanks man.
Yes! Even though Gold Out might have fallen through, at least they wear the gold jerseys.
Go Bears!
by RollOnYouBears667 on Aug 27, 2008 8:44 PM PDT reply actions
Don’t get me wrong, I want a gold out, but it’s quite ironic how we’re trying to gold out the stadium when we can’t even get every Cal fan who attends the game to wear blue. Heck, people can’t even seem to wear gold either (if they’re going to wear any other color than blue). There are way too many Cal fans in the stadium wearing white, brown, green, other random colors… and sometimes even red.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
That’s why it would never work without some mass sponsorship with free T-shirts for the entire stadium. Cal fans, sadly, aren’t as in the loop as SEC fans. Take Georgia, for example, who organized a sponsorless Black Out last year. Every single person in the stadium bought a black t-shirt or sweatshirt and the stadium looked terrific. No free T-shirts handed out. If we can ever do anything like that, I would be amazed and ecstatic.
Go Bears!
by RollOnYouBears667 on Aug 27, 2008 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions
With all due respect, we’re not Georgia and we’re not the SEC. We’re Cal. When Memorial sells out and the fans get loud, I’m sure the players feel it.
I have a hard time imagining the student section in Athens chanting Nobel Prize, Nobel Prize.
