DBD 8.22.08 Wow! The Big Decision By Coach Shocked Us All!
Unbelievable. Who saw that coming? If you don't know what I'm talking about, this is per Okanes:
Cal coach Jeff Tedford approached reporters after Thursday’s practice and joked he couldn’t talk because he had to get to a meeting.
He knew what question was coming.
After all, the assembled media could see it with their very own eyes. CBKWit making posts with the first team during the first day of practice using scout teams.
"CBKWit is going to start. We might as well cut to the chase," Tedford said. "Both of them have had a great camp. CBKWit is going to take the first snaps and we’ll see how it goes from there."
It was a surreal moment. So much attention has been focused on the Marshawnthusiast battle between CBKWit and TwistNHook and to actually hear a resolution just seemed a little unreal.
So now what? Well, CBKWit will spend the next week practicing with the first team, knowing he will start the season-opener against Michigan State blog, The Enlightened Spartan. But Tedford said TwistNHook will also post against the Spartans. So while we do have some answers, there isn’t total closure on this topic.
Tedford didn’t say how much TwistNHook would post, or when he would be inserted into the game. But he said it was likely the coaching staff would come up with some designated juncture in which TwistNHook will post.
"It’s so close that it’s going to be a continual evaluation," Tedford said.
CBKWit seemed arrogantly confident now that he’s been handed the starting Marshawnthsiast. He blasted TwistNHook’s accomplishments and also said that Ussain Bolt was a hero of his and he was going to mock TwistNHook every day after practice.
"It’s an honor to be named starter, especially after what Twist has done at CGB," CBKWit said. "But that dude was a total asshole. We need him OUT of here!
TwistNHook declined to comment after practice. This obviously is a tough time for the fifth-year senior. He was seen crying in the women's showers by various members of the media while eating a ham sandwich.
Before last season, TwistNHook was rated as the top blogger prospect in the country by ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr.
Wow! But I mean I think some of us saw that coming. Sure, Twist has the experience of years and years of terrible jokes. And just because CBKWit is beloved by all doesn't necessarily mean coach is gonna give him the job. But you could see it in the DBDs. Start of August, they were OK. But recently, whoo ee! PU! A lot of rookie mistakes.
I read the nail in the coffin was when TwistNHook posted up photos of scantily clad guys in a DBD recently. Rumors indicate that it went over poorly with coach to see two be-speedoed dudes doing gymnastics on each other. Coach really had no choice after that point, because Twist had lost the respect of the team.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a ham sandwich to finish.
LINKS!
First things first. Some photos from the tree-site yesterday thanks to Protest Shooter. The sacred grove. The WWI memorial.
Yesterday, much was made of the struggle of Fannypack Americans to earn trust and respects of normal Americans (or normies). They have to overcome so much fannypackaphobia these days. With the slurs and the ballot measures.
And now, look, an actual Saint has pushed back the movement decades:
Ewwwww!
Also, do not forget that Fan Appreciation Day is tomorrow. I'm getting there early. The line for Riley will be long.
Two Golden Bears win Olympic silver with the Water Polo team:
BEIJING - Former Golden Bears Heather Petri and Elsie Windes won silver medals with the U.S. water polo team Tuesday morning. The Americans fell just one goal short in the gold medal game to the Netherlands, 9-8, at the Ying Tung Natatorium. Petri and Windes both earned starting nods, but neither scored (a combined 0-for-5 on shots on goal).
The Netherlands built a four-goal lead in the first quarter before the Americans stormed back to knot the score at 5-5 at the end of the second quarter. This was Team USA's first gold medal game since the 2000 Olympics and the third consecutive medal in Olympic competition, which is a feat that no other women's water polo team has accomplished.
Cal Olympic Round Up Day 13.
Many Golden Bears are in Fastpitch Softball:
Berkeley - Former California softball players Kristina Thorson (Chicago Bandits), Emily Friedman and Chelsea Spencer (Philadelphia Force) and Alex Sutton, Jocelyn Forest and Lisa Iancin of the New England Riptide will all be competing for the 2008 National Pro Fastpitch League crown, Aug. 22-24 in Kimberly, Wis.
After three months of competition and nearly 300 games league-wide, the Bandits, Force, Riptide and Washington Glory comprise the four-team bracket.
Chron article on Riley. But let's look at the non-Riley info:
Briefly: Sophomore tailback Jahvid Best had the day off, which has been a common occurrence during training camp. Thursday's day off was odd, however, considering the team is not scheduled to practice today or Sunday. ... Tedford said walk-on kicker David Seawright has beaten out Jordan Kay for place-kicking duties, but the kickoff role is still being evaluated. "I feel like (Seawright) has a great upside with his leg strength. Once he got his bearings, he's been very consistent and gives us a little more range," Tedford said. ... Receivers Michael Calvin, LaReylle Cunningham and Sean Young took the majority of the first-team repetitions. Florida-transfer Nyan Boateng ran only one route with the starters. "We probably won't know the starters until game time, when we see what the game plan will be," Tedford said. "There will probably be a broader rotation than we've ever had with the receivers." ... Tedford said receivers Verran Tucker and Marvin Jones won't redshirt, joining defensive tackle Kendrick Payne, linebacker Mychal Kendricks, tight end Anthony Miller and safety Bryant Nnabuife as newcomers who will play right away. Corners Marc Anthony and Josh Hill could join that group.
Marshawn suffered a slight injury to his knee in practice when he collided with Trent Edwards. As you might have guessed, Edwards suffered a more serious injury when he collided with Marshawn.
During the final night practice at St. John Fisher College, Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards sustained a deep bruise in his right quadriceps. It is unknown if Edwards will take part in this Sunday's preseason game at Indianapolis.
It happened during 11-on-11 drills when Edwards collided with running back Marshawn Lynch. Both players came up lame. Lynch continued to practice, Edwards left the field under his own power.
BTW, I haven't seen any thank you ladies for all those beefcake photos yesterday. I know you are appreciative, how about showing it verbally and financially.
Either way, this is a new era in Cal football. If you find any links, Riley or otherwise, dump em here. Go Bears!
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

college fantasy football draft tomorrow too!
Yeah, I know, poorly timed and all that, but I couldn’t move the time once the league was set up. That’s my bad.
I'm still wondering why the Nets didn't draft Leon Powe.
yeah, i'm gonna miss the draft
fan appreciation day is way more important. oh well.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
We are not amused
MSU Fanboard, mocking our players. Something tells me that this is right up Zoonews’ alley.
I kissed Dumpster Muffin and I liked it. The taste of her hippie chapped lips.
Boy are they dumb! They called Nate the Starting QB and Tedford Bellotti. I mock their knowledge. Ha!

A terrible movie because it DIDN’T star Keanu Reeves.

Oh how right you all were about that film. I finally watched it a few nights ago. I mean, theres no point in beating a dead horse, but the movie is incredible. The pickup football game on the beach was even more awesome than Karate Kid’s beach soccer game.
Spoiler Alert.
The only part i took exception to was the fate Busey’s character met. I’m pretty sure Busey’s crazy would reflect even multiple shotgun blasts to the back.
Are you still surfing?
Every day.
For me, the movie is all Bodhi/Swayze. Busey was great. John McGinley was his average stellar self (Office Space!). Bigelow did an awesome directing job. I just can’t think of any weaknesses and for this genre, I can’t think of any better movie.
Maharg, cool catch on Breaking Point. I’d never heard of it.

Sagarin's 2008 Ratings Have Cal at #14
Normally, Sagarin determines his ratings based on the results on the field, but to start the season, he must ‘preweight’ the field with expected strength values. This year, he starts off Cal at #14!
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
The Riley news moves fast!

A guy on bearinsider points out that the injunction may be lifted Monday, without a 7 day appeal window, and without a 20 day stay of the original injunction.
…could this be the best preseason for Cal football ever? Could it?!?
the guy on BearInsider is wrong
08/21/08 TR – Motion – Parties To Appear
This Tentative Ruling is issued by Judge Barbara J. Miller On the Order to Show Cause why Court should not enter Judgment, PARTIES ARE TO APPEAR. The parties shall be prepared to address Respondents’ request that this Court not stay the effective date of the Judgment by seven days. The Court is currently inclined to grant the request.
the injuction will not be lifted monday. basically, after entering judgment the first time, the court continued the injuction for 7 days, giving oaks et. al. enough time to file an appeal, which then extend the injunction an additional 20 days while the appeals court considered the merits of the appeal. appeals court kicked the case back down to the trial court, saying ‘you need to issue a final judgment before we can do anything’. fine.
this time, as the court prepares to issue its final judgment, UC is saying that Oaks & co. don’t need the 7 day extension, since if they appeal (and they will), they’ll be filing pretty much the exact same documents with the same court. in the interest of expediting the case, UC will agree to do nothing for 2 business days, giving the petitioners time to re-file their appeal, and it sounds like the judge is inclined to concur with that reasoning. all this would do is speed up the whole process by a week. good, but we’re not done yet. we’d still be looking at the trees coming down the monday after the Maryland game at the earliest.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
I am now cold and flaccid. Thanks. Thanks a lot.

Okanes agrees with Tedford’s decision based on each player’s performance during training camp.
Both Riley and Nate Longshore have had their good runs and bad runs during camp, but Riley is the better quarterback right now. Riley has improved as camp has gone along and Longshore has fallen off a bit. So if Tedford’s idea was to pick the best quarterback right now, that player is Riley.
Riley has played really well in practice lately. He’s making all the throws with excellent accuracy. And when he does make a bad play, he’s handling it better. At the beginning of camp, his body language when he made a mistake was pretty bad. He’d mope around or get upset with himself. Now, he seems better equipped to simply just move along to the next play.
Well, I guess we’ll have to trust Okanes. He does, afterall, attend practices. But at the same time, I’m sort of weary about trusting the opinion of some sports writers.

Some Pac-10 props from Bodog for you degenerates...
How many Passing Yards will Rudy Carpenter (ASU) have in the 2008 Season? 3200: (-115)o, (-115)u
How many Passing TD’s will Rudy Carpenter (ASU) have in the 2008 Season? 26½: (-115)o, (-115)u
How many Passing Yards will Mark Sanchez (USC) have in the 2008 Season? 3000: (+105)o, (-135)u
How many Passing TD’s will Mark Sanchez (USC) have in the 2008 Season? 26½: (-115)o, (-115)u
(for the above, player must play in 1st regular season game, 2008 regular season only)
Who will lead the USC Trojans in Receiving Yards for the 2008 Regular Season?
Vidal Hazelton – 1/1
Patrick Turner – 3/2
Damian Williams – 3/1
Other – 5/1
Is taking the under on Sanchez and rooting for a knee explosion too evil? It might be too evil. It’s probably too evil. I won’t do that.
When it comes to USC, nothing is too evil.

When it comes to USC, nothing we do is Evil.

In relative terms, of course, but the fundamental concepts of good and evil remain static regardless of your adversary. It is evil to murder, for example, even if your are murdering an alleged murderer and esteemed USC alum such as O.J. Simpson.
Fundamental nothing. If I saw Pete Carroll in the street, it’s my duty to punch him in the dick.

You can’t see it because it’s out of the frame, but Best is towing the ship at this point. Even though at this stage in real life he’s still a fetus. That’s how fast he is.

Good luck getting your money back from BoDog. Of all the American books they are quite possibly the worst in extracting any of your earnings back.

Ted Miller posts his top concerns for each team.
California: With Kevin Riley named the starting quarterback over Nate Longshore, a question has been answered, but a related issue remains: How sharp will the Bears passing game be with the less-experienced Riley running an offense featuring a completely rebuilt group of receivers?
Not sure if this was already posted, but per Okanes, a chart of the starters.

Seattle Times story on Cal:
We interrupt your morning Cheerios with this visual (Warning: You might want to put down the spoon for a few seconds).
Zack Follett, a California linebacker who is one of the Pac-10’s best, recalls a scene from earlier this summer. The Bears’ weight room looks out on the oaks surrounding Memorial Stadium, where Berkeley “tree people” have been lodged for almost two years to protest a major facilities renovation.
As Follett tells it, attempts were made with boom trucks to remove the protesters, ruled by a court injunction to present a safety and health hazard. But the protesters, he says, had been “saving up in glass jars” human waste.
“They were chucking bombs,” Follett said recently of the tree-sitters. “It was pretty exciting.”

In Wednesday’s interview with Nate Longshore, we reported that the Cal quarterback can frequently be seen on campus engaging in vigorous energy policy debates with his imaginary friend, a unicorn named Fizzywinkles. Mr. Longshore’s companion is called Merriman Poole. We regret the error.

I’m surprised you got a picture of Jahvid Best and Shane Vereen. I didn’t see them at all during the day. Where were they? Nate’s absence was very conspicuous.
I didnt see him either. I took about 120 photos, which Im gonna roll out in a series of posts over the next week. Your photos were great, too, and when I make my posts, fee free to add your own comments. Go Bears!

I don’t see why this is an either or proposition. Couldn’t people enjoy ALL the photographs? The only difference is I’m a Marshawnthusiast. But here at SBN, users are just as important as Marshawnthusiasts (and doubly so compared to me!). I would love if Turkey shared his photos with us by copying some of them into the Fan Appreciation Day photo posts. And I’m sure he has stories of the day, too, to share.
