DBD 8.11.08 Lose Something, Brah?
GO SEE POINT BREAK LIVE!
Here's info on tickets. It plays every Sunday night at Fat City in SF over on 11th Street. It is WILDLY hilarious.
For those who missed our last discussion of The.Greatest.Movie.Ever (Point Break), this is a live stage adaption of the classic disastrous action movie. If you've never seen it, let me recap it in 1 sentence:
Keanu Reeves (!) plays a former college QB (!) turned FBI agent (!) named Johnny Utah (!!!!) who goes deep undercover (!) into a ring of bank robbing surfers (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).
The irony factor of this movie has never, EVER been rivaled. Ever. Or the shlock factor.
So, for the live adaption, they choose somebody to play the role of Keanu. The dude had just as much acting ability. It's so Brechtian, that the audience is basically part of the play. We sat in the front row and were very much involved. When the bank robbing surfers came in, we all had to get down on the floor. Keanu even came up to me specifically at one point with a gun and was like "GET THE FUCK DOWN ON THE FLOOR!" People fought onto us. We held Bodhi's surfboard at the end.
And the juxtaposition of the ostensibly "serious" action lines with the absurdest theater creates mass hilarity. It takes the hilariousness of the movie's stupidity and expands upon it. For example, the Cue Card Girl (who holds the cue cards for the Keanu character to read and sort of pushes him through the play) is always giving "Keanu" hilarious direction on how to give his lines. And the more insanely stupid Keanu's line is, the more intensely hilarious direction he receives.
I don't want to give much more away (I fear I have already too much). You don't even have to have had seen the movie. My friend hadn't and was laughing just as hard, if not harder. Basically, go see it asap!
Oh and if you go, buy the poncho. It can get pretty wet.
Here are some videos on YouTube. of the show to get you acquainted.
And now on to some links!
Okanes has some info on practice:
The Bears practiced in full pads for the third straight day, and it’s starting to show. Several players sat out with injuries. Cal had trouble finding running backs to take reps after Tracy Slocum suffered a stinger. Jahvid Best ran with the first team, but his backups were walk-ons such as Peter Geurts and Langston Jackson.
Joining an already fairly extensive list on the sideline is linebacker Anthony Felder (swollen knee) and offensive tackle Chet Teofilo (hamstring). None of the injured players reported yesterday returned today.
And more info. As a minor note, I'm not cutting and pasting the entire article. Just a small chunk. Apparently, you cant C+P the whole thing according to the big guys up stairs. So, click on the link to read it all. And he has more links, too. I'm just trucking over some of the info here.
After wide receiver Sean Young had another strong day, Tedford said the sixth-year senior is definitely in the mix to get some playing time. The Bears weren’t even sure if Young would be able to come back this season but was granted an extra year of eligibiilty by the NCAA.
“He’s probably having the most consistent camp of any of the receivers,” Tedford said. “It’s great to see becasue he’s been here a long time and and he’s finally healthy. He’s always shown flashes of being able to be a contributor.”
Chron article on Arizona maybe being a surprise team.
The Cal Athletics site is down now, so I can't truck any "Official" links over. If/when it works, I'll bring them over.
Also, please root for the Australian Quad Sculls rowing team in the Olympics. A friend of mine is on there. Although my knowledge of rowing is poor, they appear to have made it to the 2nd round. Not quite the final, but it's better than coming home. Go Australian Quad Sculls rowing team! Go Bears!

cal's qb depth is starting to look pretty enviable
after both UW’s Jake Locker and USC’s Mark Sanchez went down in practice last week, ULCA’s Ben Olson broke his foot (again) in practice on Friday. he’s expected to be out 8 weeks, meaning he may or may not be back for Cal’s matchup with the Bruins in late October.
regardless of which side of Nate Longshore / Kevin Riley you happen to be on, either one of them looks like a much better option than Osaar Rasshan at this point.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Olson is on our team
... or Law Firm for that matter… God what a huge disappointment Olson has been.
He’s the football equivalent of a double agent.
– He remains healthy just enough to create a QB controversy, but never remains healthy enough to actually help the team.
– He prevents other QBs from getting practice with the 1st team then gets hurt during the season and forces the backups to get thrust into games.
– He takes up a much needed scholarship spot for years on end but doesn’t play.
– He prevents the recruitment of top-notch QB talent.
– Plus you can’t get rid of him because even though he’s like a cancer on the team, you cannot release him for sustaining recoverable injuries.
Olson is definitely on our payroll, not theirs.
Forgot to mention
I hope Olson petitions for… AND GETS an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA… wouldn’t it be awesome for Olson to do this to UCLA all over again? He’s the QB equivalent of Karl Dorrell.
I feel like he’s a good kid with some talent, just terribly unlucky.
http://mymindgrapes.wordpress.com
He does seem to be a good kid. He had talent in high school. I just don’t think he had Pac-10 talent. The kid seemed like he lost his head for the game during the 2 years he took off from football in order to take part in a Mormon mission. He is gun shy to the millionth degree. The fact that UCLA was going to start him really makes me question their young talent. It’s a rebuilding season anyways, why not throw a youngin into the fray and let him start getting a feel.
Oh well.
The tree sitters have still not given up their newly annexed territory.
And the article mentions 104.1 FM, Tree-Berkeley radio station. Has anyone heard of this station or listened to any of its programming? I’m really curious about what sorts of bizarre topics this station discusses.
Entertaining Daily Cal letter to the editor with someone complaining that an editorial was overly pro-University.
This quote nicely sums it up:

WARNING: Only download clips that you absolutely will use because these online drives have small bandwidth limitations. You can preview the video in your browser by clicking on the name of the clip.
danzig, how big are these?
i won’t use these clips myself (my talents lie elsewhere), but i could certainly host them in a more permanent place on this site. thoughts?
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Each clip, or ‘play’ is about 6mb. In total I guess this entire collection is 5.7gigs.
Most video editors keep the source clips uncompressed (gigantic files) but I do not… I capture them and compress them in real time into Divx .avi files. They’re so much easier to work with and wouldn’t bog down even the weakest computer. Hence the speed at which I can churn these out.
This free online drive is a pretty good temporary solution since it’s free and it allows you to preview the file in the browser before you download, thereby allowing you to know what plays you’re getting (nifty feature). The prob is bandwidth limitations for each drive… but I figure only about 3-4 of us would try their hand at making HL tapes anyway.
If you want I can rip the files onto a data DVD and just send them to you.
I didn't make it to the show ...
Sailing on Saturday, I didn’t wear my hat and got just a wicked sunburn. Stupid. Sunday morning not so bad, but as the day wore on and especially today, it feels like carpet tacks being pounded into my head one at a time. It feels like having my skin ripped off slowly. It feels like having to watch 2007 Longshore ‘highlights’ one at time.
Stanfurd Delendum Est.
It feels like having to watch Keanu Reeves act.

OH GOD, the humanity!!! I think we all remember that day, when each of us had a little piece of our humanity ripped away.

Stunningly, I’m swamped at work. So, my usual Maharg tete-e-tete will have to be cut shorter today probably. That said, here are some more articles:
Nathan Adrian gets a gold medal. You know that amazing relay where we beat the French by like .08 seconds and shattered the world record. Nathan swam in the prelims and his team got a world record there and that apparently gets you a gold or something. I’m confused. But Go Bears!
BEIJING, CHINA – University of California sophomore Nathan Adrian has earned a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics as a member of the United States’ 400 free relay. The Americans captured the event in the finals on Monday, Aug. 11 (Beijing time) when Michael Phelps, Garrett Weber-Gale, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak swam a world-record time of 3:08.24, topping France (3:08.32) and Australia (3:09.91). Adrian had competed in the 400 free relay heats for the United States on Sunday, Aug. 10, enabling him to garner a gold medal as well.
More info on fall practice:
“It’s been nice to see some of the young guys playing well. The two new tight ends, Spencer [Ladner] and Anthony [Miller], have really impressed us. The young receivers have done a nice job; and [Bryant] Nnabuife and the young defensive linemen have really done well also. Mychal Kendricks has really stood out. It’s a great group of young guys. Those guys are really doing a good job. Not only are they good athlete and hard workers, but they’re great kids as well.”
Once again, the defense looked impressive, providing the majority of the big plays. Nnabuife tallied an interception and a pass break-up, as well as a sack on a blitz; freshman Trevor Guyton forced a fumble; and junior Tyson Alualu and sophomore Michael Mohamed both caused trouble in the backfield. However, Tedford was quick to point out that the defense being ahead at this point of camp is to be expected.
“[The offense usually catches up to the defense] when you stop all of the installation,” Tedford said. “When you put new plays in every practice, everything is learning. Then when you start being able to get repetitions with them, we get more efficient.”

What is the meaning of this?
Can you break that up into bullet points?

Based on my previous formatting attempts, no, no I cannot.

Zoonews, that’s too long for me to read, can I get bullet points?

Brilliant. If I ever have to simplify some complex concept for a broad audience at work or in class, I’ll just put together a series of slides with that pigeon on them. That should clarify everything.
I’m glad someone added another picture and ruined your hopes. I’m also glad it was you.

Oh joy!
More lawsuit stuff on the original court case website.
First, a thoroughly convincing rebuttal of Oaks et al. request to consider the shoring system during construction of SAHPC as an alteration of the Stadium.
Second, an “Order to Show Cause” from Judge Miller addressed to both parties. If I understand correctly, and that’s no sure thing, she is basically saying:
- Unless you give me a good reason, on Aug. 25th I’m going to make my ruling officially official and dissolve the injunction 7 days thereafter.
- My judgment will consider that UC has complied with all its obligations under CEQA and A-P.
- If you have a good reason submit it in writing before Aug. 19.
This feels like deja vu all over again.
Assuming this is right, and assuming she rejects (again) the BS that Oaks et al. will inevitably offer up (yet again), then:
- The injunction will dissolve on September 1st.
- Plaintiffs will refile their appeal and again get an additional 20 days.
- Assuming all goes well, the injunction will dissolve without extension by Sept. 20th at the latest though we can hope that since the Appeals Court has already looked at this once, we might get a quicker reaction.
This puts us smack dam in the middle of the season. It guarantees that treeshitters will be in their perch for MSU but hopefully gone by CSU. Would we even start initial excavation/chopping during the season or does this mean nothing will happen until December?
Does this sound about right? Lawyers? Anyone?
Well, the university can shake the tree sitters down at any time for any number of reasons. As much as they want to be the main event, they are just a side show. We have chosen not to do it so far presumably due to the difficulty of securing the area post-shake, but this might be reconsidered prior to the first home game in order to prevent shit from flying both ways.
My understanding is that the tree-sitters right now are kept in 1 tree (and have been there since the June undertaking). Also, my understanding is that this tree is NOT slated to come down. I might be wrong on this, but this is what I have read elsewhere.
If this is true, not only is their protest even MORE laughable, but it shows why Cal has not taken the extreme measures that many here and elsewhere have seemingly demanded.
They just plain don’t matter.

Agreed except it will be a royal kick in the crotch to have those bastards up there when ABC comes back a year later, shows footage of them and rehashes the saga. It really can’t help from a marketing/recruiting perspective.
If you are right about the tree that is total comedy! We should let ABC know!
I just think that it’s important to remember that we could take them down for detainment, for questioning, to secure the area, for public safety reasons, even for shits & giggles at anytime. Like now. Or now. Or now. Or even… now. The main consideration with them are public relations, liability if somebody is hurt or oppressed, and sealing their access off from returning to their perches. The media focuses on them because it’s a circus, but they aren’t a party to the lawsuit and the lawsuit isn’t about them. There’s just been no reason to push the issue as it’s easiest to get them out and immediately chop chop while they are being questioned. I’d be surprised if they are in the trees for the first game, but I said that a year a go and was surprised so who knows… anyways, all the lawsuit dates and delays are about cutting wood, not pulling hippies. We could do that now. Or… now.
We could indeed take them down at any moment, but we haven’t and probably won’t as you’ve said until we are in a position to take down and then immediately chop down to minimize reinfestation risk. I’ll be glad when now is now.
Of course if the are in the wrong tree, which would be fitting, we could just leave them up there and laugh at them as the trees fall. I mean I like trees and all but…that would be funny.
It is true that those without full knowledge of the situation might be destined to laugh at us.
But why care what ignorant people think?

I could be wrong but doesn’t all this mean it is even more likely that the COB will join the appeal and thus eliminate any sort of bond going forward?
This is ridiculous.

Well, they said they wouldnt do anything for 58 days from their meeting. I forget the date of the meeting. But I think 58 days after that is after the potential 9.20 deadline we are looking at here.
Who knows?
