His work on Cal kick offs might be the most impressive and the most underrated. Thanks for this danzig!

Wow

danzig = Ron English?

I’ve never seen them in the same place at the same time.

If you’re thinking about the defensive coordinator of Mich… then you’re right… that’s who’s name I swiped. I use several fake names for the web. Almost all my sports related stuff is under Ron.

by danzig on Jul 26, 2008 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

You’re working for Louisville now I’m afraid.
It’s sad because the Cardinals are just one letter beyond the Cardinal.

by joffle on Jul 26, 2008 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Serious?.. I didn’t know that… I guess I’m not surprised given that his D lost to AppSt then got bitch slapped by Oregon.. then lost to the buckeye… YET again.

by danzig on Jul 26, 2008 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, Rodriguez replaced him with Scott Shafer, who was DC at Stanford last year. Although I think English was still mostly well regarded by the Michigan folks.

by joffle on Jul 26, 2008 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Yea, but...

The Cardinal is a color, The Cardinals are actually something you can have a mascot for.

Hahaha

That was one of the funniest plays when Best ran over Tha1 at the CSU game.

by NorCalLonghorn on Jul 26, 2008 9:24 AM PDT reply actions

Not sure who I love more right now...

Danzig or Jahvid.

Tedford isn’t normally one for super hyberbole, so this quote from Pac-10 media day really opened my eyes.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had this many at one time… This is the most explosive backfield we’ve had since we’ve been here [Best and Shane Vereen].” Remember we are coming of of Arrington-Lynch, Lynch-Forsett, and Forsett-Best over the last four seasons. Bold Tedford!

And the last run against ‘SC is insane. On two or three plays, he was one guy away from changing a Cal loss into a Cal win (UCLA and USC at the least). Considering he had so few touches, it should be fun for the next three years.

Thanks danzig!

You’re welcome dude.

Can he win a Heisman for his performance as a gunner?

Is he going to do kick offs again this season? I would think if he is going to be a lead back, that’s is a no. But his skill is so unbelievable as a gunner, it’s tough to see that go.

Well

I feel much better about our backfield situation. Assuming he’s healthy, that is.

I'm still wondering why the Nets didn't draft Leon Powe.

I'm confused

Whose child do I want to have more right now—Danzig or Jahvid? And I’m usually not a chick on the Internet anyway.

by sec119 on Jul 26, 2008 11:20 AM PDT reply actions

I thought THA1 was excitement incarnate...

...but after the CSU game, I remember saying that Jahvid Best is so electrifying that he cannot safely go in the whirlpool because it would be like throwing a hairdryer in the tub.

Why they weren’t running him and THA1 on an end-around last year at least three times a game is beyond me – end-around, fake the reverse, and the defense has to account for the fact that they’re coming around opposite corners, at speed, and you can only have a prayer of stopping one of them…

My beef with Tedford last year is that when things went south, he didn’t get creative enough trying to get the ball into the hands of the playmakers by alternate means. Maybe this year will be different…

Jahvid never goes down on the first hit. People try to characterize him as a fragile, speed-only back, but it’s not true.

by OskiMonsta on Jul 27, 2008 6:42 AM PDT reply actions

Well I think there’s a difference between not going down on the first hit/tackle because of a RB’s balance versus break tackle ability. Marshawn clearly had a great break tackle ability as well as pretty good balance too. Best clearly has great agility and balance but I’m not so sure he’s going to drag defenders down the field or break a wrap-up tackle. Clearly though, Best’s speed and elusiveness prevents defenders from making clean wrap-up tackles and instead result to desperation hits and arm tackles.

If you want to compare to Marshawn, he clearly he has a more speed and a less power. He may never get up to 220 like #10, but with a couple more years to add some muscle, he could close the gap.

But he’s not a featherweight, and he showed good strength for a true freshman. A lot of people portray him as one dimensional (speed), and I don’t think it’s true.

by OskiMonsta on Jul 27, 2008 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

As I said below, Jahvid is the same size as Shane, Tracy and Justin. And, he’s faster than all 3 – though Vereen has some wheels too.

With regard to Marshawn, Jahvid is unquestionably much faster. In fact, I’d venture to guess all of the above guys were faster than Marshawn. What separated Marshawn from so many backs was his tenacity and vision – certainly not his breakaway speed (that isn’t to say he didn’t have long runs, just that if Jahvid hits daylight, it’s game over).

This video was a reminder of how many times last year I questioned Tedford’s limited use of Jahvid. You could tell from game 1 he was special. I can’t wait to watch Jahvid take the reigns this year, obviously I’m not alone.

http://sportingcontrarian.wordpress.com/

by BeastMode on Jul 27, 2008 10:08 AM PDT reply actions

I questioned the same thing. Sometimes he was not used in the run game at all… eg Oregon/UCLA when I felt we could really use it… we used Monty instead. Coach definitely uses people to maximize their skills or to protect them physically, or at least that’s what I think it is:

Djax didn’t run many routes across the middle.
Until AF Justin didn’t get many opportunities to catch the ball as a receiver like Marshawn did.

Coach did start running Jahvid between the tackles more late in the season… starting from WashSt and into USC, but then he got hurt in that game and we never saw more of it.

IMHO Jahvid is not the delicate rosebud Coach treats him as… I think he’ll be fine running in between the tackles. If we ran Justin between the tackles 30+ times per game, I think Jahvid/Tracy/Shane will be just fine. And b/c of Jahvid’s skill with zone runs, perhaps we’ll shotgun more so our QBs can keep their eyes down the field at all times.

by danzig on Jul 27, 2008 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I also agree Jahvid should not be treated with kid gloves. He was as much as both Vereen and Slucom (all three range from 192 to 198 pounds). And, as far as the hip injury being some sort of indicator of his fragility, I mark it down more as a freak accident and I consider his time off more precautionary than necessary.

The Oregon State, UCLA, and ASU games were extremely frustrating. Best had a total of 6 carries and Forsett was almost completely shut down against UCLA and ASU. I don’t care what tedford’s excuses are in those games, one of your two most explosive players on the team should of had more touches.

by BeastMode on Jul 27, 2008 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think it's quite that simple

I don’t know if there are any concerns about Best’s pass-blocking, but that’s commonly a reason in the NFL for players that are good runners not getting much playing time. So maybe that was a reason, given Longshore’s much-discussed lack of mobility.

I'm still wondering why the Nets didn't draft Leon Powe.

by yellow fever on Jul 31, 2008 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Then limit his play on third down, just as say the Bills did with Marshawn this year. Pass blocking concerns don’t preclude his participation in running plays.

Amazing job Danzig!!

I really really hope Jhavid is 100% as Tedford says he is

I think Best become my personal hero after he recovered the kickoff at the Oregon game where two Oregon players ran into each other.
