3 Tree Sitters Come Down (And Now Dumpster Muffin, too!)

(07-02) 13:12 PDT BERKELEY -- Three of the Memorial Stadium tree-sitters left their perches today and Tuesday night, leaving just four protesters making a stand against UC's plans to build an athletic training center in the grove, UC Berkeley officials said.
The three protesters, who have not been identified, climbed down from the trees late Tuesday night, campus spokesman Dan Mogulof said. One of them was arrested by campus police while the other two climbed up a different tree, he said.
After talking to police this morning, the two came down. All three have been charged with trespassing and violating a court order to abandon the protest in the grove, Mogulof said.
The protesters' reasons for leaving the 19-month-old tree-sit were not immediately available.
The fate of the oak grove hinges on the outcome of a lawsuit brought by the City of Berkeley, the Panoramic Hill Association and oak tree supporters. A judge is expected to rule in the next few weeks whether the university can go ahead with plans to build a $140 million sports training center next to the stadium.

It’s no real surprise – I think a lot of people don’t realize just how much these guys are used to being able to rotate in and out, get good food and shower, use their laptops in the trees, sleep in nice sleeping bags on stable platforms, etc. etc. By removing as much crap as they did from the trees and by guarding the exits UCPD made it much, much harder to live there, and I think it’s easy to self- justify leaving when there are others in the trees, and after all you’re leaving that much more food for the others. It will be interesting to see if the last couple of people hold on longer or not, but I suspect one or two may leave soon.

A short time later, Amanda "Dumpster Muffin" Tierney, age 21, also came down peacefully from her perch. She had previously told police officers that she was suffering from an unspecified medical problem and, after assurances that she would receive immediate medical care, Ms. Tierney descended at 1:45 this afternoon.
Once on the ground she appeared to be in distress; the Berkeley Fire department was immediately called and a physician affiliated with the protest was allowed in to the grove to provide medical care until fire department EMT’s arrived a short time later. Ms. Tierney was transported to Highland Hospital where, as of this writing, she remains under guard for her protection against an alleged stalker known only as TwistNHook.
Is her name really Amanda Tierney?
