Gold Out Vs MSU-Keep it Goin'

This fell off the blog, but I thought it needed to be there in order to let as many people know as possible. There is a big movement by both the athletic department and the fans to get everyone to wear gold to the nationally televised opener vs. Michigan State University. The idea is for the students to be in blue and the rest of the stadium in gold, thus creating a huge gold "C" as seen from the blimp above the stadium. Tell this to all of your friends that might be going to the game. A complete gold out would look something like this:2503544215_ff72fb1a1b_o_medium

and the gold out with the student section in blue would look like this:

Actually, the young alumni section would probably be in gold also, but it's close enough for now.

If anyone wants to see the original post, here it is:

http://www.californiagoldenblogs.com/2008/5/18/520305/gold-out-memorial-–-pass-i

So: Show up to the game with you and your friends wearing gold, and when MSU has the ball, don't clap your hands, don't sit on your ass, just stand up and yell as loud as you can.

the AD is supporting this, too?

I’ve read that elsewhere on the net, but I haven’t seen anything like that on the “Official” site. Are you sure that the AD is involved, because they’re certainly not getting out the word. I’d love to see Tedford put his 2 cents into the importance of doing this. That would get the old alumni in motion. Gold out!

by Jan K Oski on Jun 7, 2008 7:43 PM PDT reply actions

I’ve actually emailed the AD and they confirmed that they know about it, what they told me is that they were waiting for a sponsor to sign the contract and to see how many shirts they would be able to give out. but I don’t think anything is set in stone yet. I’m pretty sure the reason that we don’t see any ads or anything is that nothing is final and they can’t say something about free gold shirts if the sponsor hasn’t actually committed to giving out the shirts.

"BIG MOVEMENT"?

How come you are the only person who keeps talking about it. “GOLD OUT” is so gimmicky – I’d be happy with a sell out which is still UNLIKELY.

by 33SwisherSweet on Jun 8, 2008 1:31 PM PDT reply actions

he's not the only one

I’m still talking about it with my cal buddies. Who cares if we have a goldout and the game isn’t sold out, it’ll still look cool and we’ll have fun doing it. And who cares if we keep talking about it… this is a blog, we can’t talk about tshirts on a blog?

33, just let us Cal fans be fans. This isn’t like we’re voting on abortion rights or something, we just want to do something fun at a game and show our support. What’s wrong with that?

I think us fans have a right to choose what color tshirt we’re going to wear without getting criticized.

In a previous post you said that “Cal fans suck”... well, I happen to think different…and more fan involvement is a good thing.

OK... good one ROY...

I state something that you disagree with (basically, state it like I see it – cal fans are not as good as college football fans should be if we are to be a true powerhouse) and you compare me to some lunatic poster from another site? Get a grip buddy.

And, while your at it try hitting up some road games and you’ll understand what I’m trying to say when I say Cal fans are generally not that good. Sure, we are improving, but on the whole we are for the most part apathetic. I’d say it’s 20/80 split.

As for the gold out, gimmicky at best.

by 33SwisherSweet on Jun 9, 2008 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions

It is gimmicky

BUT sometimes gimmicks are needed for the casual fan. And as you pointed out, Cal fans are far from rabid sports fans (other than us rabid bloggers) and this might be good to get them involved.

I definitely think an “official” announcement would help, but if the school is not prepared to give out “gold” shirts, it probably won’t work. So . . .
make it “official” already Sandy!

by oaktownmario on Jun 9, 2008 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions

If Sandy won’t do it, we will!

Does anybody know where we can get 70,000 gold tshirts in bulk?

www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com

by TwistNHook on Jun 9, 2008 11:15 AM PDT up reply actions

We only need ~50k

Just saying the games sells 70,000 tickets, there are 10,000 students, 7,000 MSU fans (probably wearing green), and 15,000 people that wear gold to the game, that’s only need 38,000 gold T-shirts. Yikes. At http://www.customlink.com/ , I designed a simple gold colored T-shirt which said “California Golden Bears” on it in blue (cool feature, it took like 30 seconds). I got a quote for how much 38,000 of them would cost, and it told me that @ $4.25/ shirt (not bad) it would cost $162,260. Ouch. No wonder Sandy can’t find a sponsor. I pledge my $10 right now. Good luck finding the rest.

The more I think about it, the more I think this is all a giant insult to Amy.

He’s worked too hard to be too evil to be compared to 33SwisherSweet, whose fairly non-controversial thesis seems to be that Cal should focus more on filling up the stadium to capacity before dressing the fans there.

If it really was Amy posting, it’d go a little something like this:

“USC did the Red Out and it was better and now you are stealing their idea just like your marching band stole the idea from Northwest Louisiana Technical College to move in concentric circles. I am going to make Moraga Bears cry sooner than later!”

Fair enough.

But does it hurt to try to Gold out? No. Than why moan. I agree we should try to fill it up but why not also try to gold out.

by royrules22 on Jun 9, 2008 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess one answer might be that organizing the Gold Out might take organizational resources away from Cal. I’m not sure what the economic cost would be. If a corporation sponsors it, maybe the corporation does all the work and Cal and/or the ATO won’t have to do anything. Who knows?

Another answer might be that this could just be a masturbatory exercise by the fans. Does having the entire stadium wear all of one color actually inspire the team to play better? Or does it just make us feel like we are better fans. Maybe it does help the team, I don’t know, I’ve never competed in a sport at the collegiate level. And my high school experience, I never had an opportunity to compete before a crowd wearing different colors and all one color to judge the difference.

From my personal, limited experience doing sports in high school, I do know that the size of the crowd cheering me on did have an effect. Well, I guess it depended. For certain sports, like cross country and track, you are aware of the crowd and it does have an effect. For wrestling, I could barely pay attention to my coach yelling stuff at me from the sidelines let alone people in the crowd. But that might be a symptom of wrestling.

I think football would fall more into the camp of cross country and track. It takes place over a long period of time and you have opportunities to focus on the crowd.

If the bottom line here is helping the team win, it would seem to me having a larger crowd would be more likely to effect that bottom line than what the crowd is wearing. But maybe other people who have competed at the collegiate level before crowds of different sizes/different clothes can chime in.

I really have no problem with it, but I just think it's extremely

hokey”/poserish”/something a college student might get excited about, but someone with more perspective would not.

I also believe that 1) if we are going to focus our Athletic Department resources on something lets focus on SELLING OUT before we worry about this “Gold Out;” 2.) It would look even more hokie hokie hokie hi if we attempted the gold out and there were big blotches of dirty yellow/brown/bench color because the game didn’t sell out; and 3) If we are going to do this (which I’m not completely opposed to) it should be done in a more meaningful game than against MSU. For instance, we broke out the Yellow’s in a statement game against Oregon in 2006. I would not be opposed to doing it against Tenn last year, SC any year, or a big game in any given year. However, to get all worked up over MSU is strange to me. I know some feel it’s a BIG GAME, but you are going to have a hard time convincing the masses of that.

Go Bears!

No, but soon they will have iPhones.

Sorry Swisher Lover #1 if the current fan base doesn’t meet your expectations. I agree, football, by in large isn’t supported the same way as it is in places that don’t have professional football nearby. But, I think Cal fans will only get better as the team continues to churn out winning seasons.

As for the Gold Out, while I agree this isn’t a big game along the lines of USC or Tennessee it is important. After last season where the teams became extremely disgruntled, perhaps a Gold Out is a sign of solidarity with the team. Maybe they can feed off that, though not as much as a full and loud Memorial. Also, I like free things, particularly with a Cal logo on the.

I'll be wearing blue....

cause I’m a REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE. In all seriousness, it’ll be interesting to see if the YELLOW OUT MOVEMENT is successful or not. Outside of free t-shirts given out at the game I don’t think it’ll be possible. Somehow I ended up with 4 free yellow shirts after the SC game last year which was much needed after the 7+ hours (tailgaiting etc) of standing in the rain.

On third thought, this may actually be a good idea if it's pulled off in that

it will show the National TV audience (if they decide to tune in) that we are serious about football. However, I’m having a hard time separating that from the gimmickiness of it all. Regardless, you guys feel passionate about it so DO IT BABY!

by 33SwisherSweet on Jun 9, 2008 7:36 PM PDT reply actions

On fourth thought,

we already are going gimmicky ie OREGON (yellow jerseys/new EA sports jerseys) so lets just sell out completely and go gimmicky. Gimmicky got them one sprained ACL from the national championship game last year and a few votes away a few years back when they missed out on the opportunity of playing Miami in the Championship Game. Hell, why not?
