DBD 12.9.08 Man, I hate all of you, especially any of you who read this website
Every morning I wake up, hoping that somebody else has done the DBD. Hoping against hope that I can relax in the morning and not frantically put it together. And yet, day in and day out, other people never do the DBD. Even though I challenged every single one of you to beat me. And maybe when I had something witty to say, it was OK, but I ran out of painfully unfunny things to say like 3 months ago. I've been running on fumes every since that Kevin Craft is the lead singer for Dark Craftika thing in October.
Bah, I hate all of you. Especially those that read this website.
Four Bears earn All-Pac10 honors:
BERKELEY - Four Golden Bears - center Alex Mack, tailback Jahvid Best, linebacker Zack Follett and cornerback Syd'Quan Thompson - have been named first-team All-Pac-10 in a vote of the conference coaches. In addition, offensive guard Noris Malele, defensive end Tyson Alualu and punter Bryan Anger were chosen to the second-team unit.
Mack, who was named on nine of 10 ballots, is a three-time first-team choice, while Best earned first-team notice for the second consecutive season after claiming a spot as a special teams performer in 2007.
Named one of 15 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athletes, which comes with a $15,000 postgraduate scholarship, Mack is also a finalist for the NFF's Draddy Award given to the top football scholar-athlete in the country. A semifinalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award, he was named a first-team mid-season All-American by both The Sporting News Today and College Football News. Mack is a two-time first-team Pac-10 All-Academic choice as well as a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for athletic and academic achievement.
Ashley walker, 2nd straight Pac10 Player of the Week:
BERKELEY - For the second-consecutive week, senior Ashley Walker of CALIFORNIA has been selected the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced. The senior forward from Modesto, Calif., garners the award for the sixth time in her career. Walker holds the school record for the most-career player of the week citations. The Bears have received the honor on 32 different occasions.
Walker averaged 26.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game as Cal advanced to the championship game of its home tournament, the Colliers International Classic, before falling to No. 22 TCU. She shot 64.5 percent (20-31) for the weekend and made 78.6 percent of her free throws (11-14) in a combined 68 minutes of playing time.
Walker had 21 points and eight rebounds in the win over Princeton in the opening game of the tournament, going 9-for-12 from the field. Her performance in the title game against the Horned Frogs included her third double-double (31 points, 12 rebounds) and third 30-point performance of the season. She leads the league in double-doubles and 30-point games. One point off her career high against TCU, Walker was named to the all-tournament team.
VBall continues in Tourney, against Illinois:
BERKELEY, Calif. - After making short work of first and second round opponents, the Golden Bears head to State College, Pa. for their third consecutive NCAA tournament regional semifinal with a shot at revenge on their minds. As one of 16 remaining teams in the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, Cal will face No. 14 Illinois in one regional semifinal match for the right to take on defending champion No. 1 Penn State in the regional final. The Bears fell to the Nittany Lions in the national championship semifinal a year ago and would like nothing better than to knock off undefeated Penn State. But first, Cal must get through an Illini squad that finished third in the Big Ten conference and which has won its last seven matches heading into the weekend. After hitting a rough patch in the season, the Bears have since won five of their last six and are in position to clinch Cal's best record in school history.
THE FACTS: No. 8 Cal (25-6, 13-5 Pac-10) earned the right to advance to the University Park Regional Semifinal of the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship with wins over Siena College and New Mexico State last weekend. The Bears will face No. 14 Illinois (26-7, 15-5 Big Ten) in a 12:30 p.m. PT match on Friday, Dec. 12 at the Rec Hall in State College, Pa. No. 1 Penn State (34-0, 20-0 Big Ten) draws Western Michigan (28-6, 14-2 MAC) in the other semifinal match at 3 p.m. PT, Dec. 12. The winners of each match will play in the University Park Regional Championship Match on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m. PT. The final will be broadcast live by ESPNU with Beth Mowins calling the action and Karch Kiraly providing color commentary. Live statistics and streaming video links for the two semifinal matches can be found at www.gopsusports.com.
Cal alum swims great:
ATLANTA - Former California All-American William Copeland set a meet record by winning the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 41.75 at the 2008 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming Short Course National Championship on Saturday in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Copeland topped a strong field that included 2008 U.S. Olympic gold medalist Matt Grevers, who was second in 41.85, 2008 Australian Olympic bronze medalist Matt Targett, who was third in 41.93, and 2008 U.S. Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte, who was fourth in 41.99.
Copeland, a six-time All-American and four-time Pac-10 champion for Cal in the 2007-08 season, also placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.05 and 11th in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:35.45 in Atlanta.
Honors to baseball players:
LUBBOCK, TEXAS - Two University of California baseball players, junior outfielder/pitcher Blake Smith and sophomore right-hander Kevin Miller, have been selected to the preseason watch list for the Wallace Award, which will honor the nation's top collegiate baseball player for the 2009 season.
The Wallace Award is presented to the nation's top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame's annual induction festivities. The 2009 award banquet will be held Thursday, July 2, in the United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech University. The Wallace Award is a dedication to the memory of the former Texas Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace. In the summer of 1984, Wallace was diagnosed with cancer and fought the disease courageously until his death on March 24, 1985, at age 27.
Smith was instrumental in the USA Baseball National (Collegiate) Team capturing the gold medal at the IV FISU World Collegiate Baseball Championship in the Czech Republic this past summer as the USA squad topped Japan, 1-0 in 12 innings for the title on July 27. He not only helped pace Team USA to an undefeated 24-0 record, he was the team's leading hitter during the national team's summer tour with a .327 average. Smith finished the summer 18-for-55 (.327) overall with five doubles, a triple, three home runs and 13 RBI in 20 games. He was also one of the national team's top relievers, sporting a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA and two saves, striking out 11 batters with only three hits and three walks in 9.0 innings. Another highlight for Smith was going 1-for-3 with a home run versus a Cuban squad that competed in the Beijing Olympics.
Jahvid Best, Pac10 player of the week:
BERKELEY - Cal sophomore tailback Jahvid Best has been named the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday.
Best had a record-setting performance in Cal's 48-7 win against Washington last Saturday. He rushed 19 times for a school-record 311 yards (16.4-yard average) and four touchdowns covering 60, 1, 20 and 84 yards. The 311 yards rushing is the fourth-highest single-game performance in Pac-10 history and fourth best in the country this year. The Cal offense piled up 549 yards total offense, including 431 yards rushing, and did not commit a turnover.
Best also claimed the Pac-10 honor after rushing for 200 yards at Washington State and for 201 yards vs. Stanford. He is the only player in school history to have three 200-yard rushing efforts.
For the season, Best has accumulated 1,394 yards on the ground - No. 4 on the Golden Bears season list - and his 126.7 ypg average leads the Pac-10 and rates fifth in the NCAA. He has the two longest runs in the Pac-10 this year. In addition to his 84-yard sprint vs. Washington, he went 86 yards for a score at WSU.
BBallgame moved to avoid Emerald Bowl:
To avoid a direct conflict with the 5 p.m. kickoff of the Emerald Bowl, in which Cal’s football team will face Miami, the Bears have moved up times for the Golden Bear Classic on Saturday, Dec. 27.

This is a test of will Twist, and you, sir, broke yet again. Blame your readers. Blame your Marshawnthusiasts. But most of all blame yourself.
I just did the DBD pretty much every morning day in and day out since like July. I am a man amongst insects!

See Twist, if you whine enough, you get what you want! (Jeff Tedford could learn a thing or two from you)
Due to my general neurosis, I suggest you get it up before agbout 7:30. Otherwise, frantic with the thought of relying upon somebody unreliable (as I often find myself), I will end up doing it myself.
Nonetheless, I welcome you doing it. Try to keep it PG13.

Normally, I get up at 6, so can get into the office by the time the market opens. I came in late today, but I’ll try.
Granted, I have no idea where to find links, so it’s probably just going to be a post about the market and economic news.
I get links from the Contra Costa Times website or the official Cal website itself. I can handle those if you want to put in a 3,000 word dissertation on the evils of supply side economics.
Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.

Bear Insider folks are helpful with links. SFGate. Miller’s blog on ESPN. Then again, without Twist, no It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia references.

Okay, here’s my intro for the dissertation:
“Ronald Reagan is evil. He hates children. And blacks. And women. Supply side taxes benefit only the rich and hurt the poor. America was founded on helping everyone out, not the rich. Where in the US Constitution does it say ‘The Land of the Rich and the Home of the Privileged’? Why should we reward companies that pollute, export US jobs overseas, and violate the rights of US workers, without even paying them a living wage?”
Actually, that was my entire essay.
If you hate it so much (or, likely, you just like to bitch)…why don’t we assign DBDers…

Emerald Bowl Tailgaiting
According to the Giants website, it is allowed:
TAILGATING
Guests may tailgate as long as they are confined to the space occupied by their vehicle. No adjacent spaces will be available for tailgating. Party spaces are, however, available for large groups attending games. For more information, please call Imperial Parking at 415-227-0114. Please note that this policy only applies to the Giants Parking Lots – Lots A, B & C.
I don’t see anything on the Emerald Bowl website, so hopefully someone can call and confirm.

I told you stop watching that garbage
I gave you a brilliant TV reco last night…. not only is it hilarious, you might learn something as well.
I hate that show… I do like Cramer however… the only useful part of that show is the think piece he does in the first 10mins of each show….something that his research team comes up with. Fastmoney is also good when they’re not talking about specific stocks.

Fav episode is the Trip to the North Pole… that was so epic…. and funny. Winter Olympics episode is my second fav.
Then it’s when James and Richard try to make a car into a Space Shuttle and launch it.
I really love the used car challenges like used Maserati/Ferarri/Lambo challenge.
The Car vs non-car transportation races are really fun to. Veron race was sick.
Playing soccer with cars.
Trying to kill a Toyota Hilux by putting it on top of a building and blowing the building up….sick.
I really love it when James reviews classics like the 1970s Aston and Martin.
Anything involving the Stig.
I liked it when they had running contests like “best driving song”
The BMW M series episode in series 4 or 5.
The test track times for certain cars are fun too.
I even like the Star In a Reasonably Priced Car segment when the guests are interesting… Simon Cowell is always a good driver….
I can go on and on…
Yeah my fav episode is the 612 Scaglietti race from Guildford to Verbier, along with the bobsled vs. car race. I’ve watched that many times.
Also:
*Hilux
*Jimmy Carr as the guest
*The Citroen C5 review was friggin fantastic (“The gearshift lever is here, where it’s supposed to be, right between the seats! That isn’t right, it’s supposed to be here, on the sunvisor, and made of rhubarb!!!!! No no no no this isn’t right at all.”)
*Reliant Robin space shuttle
*Enzo review
*Top Gear darts/conkers
*The 24hrs-in-a-SmartCar
*Mercedes E-class—>Anne Hathaway’s cottage
*Convertible Espace

Agree!
I remember the Scaglietti race… that one was very close. I like the Skyline race too, even though it wasn’t as funny, but the best cars that they ever raced were the Skyline and the Veyron.
I also loved the Car vs Bike vs Train vs Speedboat challenge. That was hella funny.
Jimmy Carr is a funny guy… you should check out the gameshow QI… he’s a regular on that show. QI is the type of show that could never be aired in the US (unless it’s on Comedy Central or HBO)… it’s totally un-sensitive, totally un-PC… and they make fun of everyone. I love it.
I don’t remember the C5 review… but I liked the Old vs New challenge when they raced an Austin vs a souped up C5 (owned by teenagers).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-DGMrLGnLg&fmt=18
I didn’t like the Enzo review… it was a bit campy with the cash register noises… I liked the Zonda F review better and the Koenigsegg CCX test… sweet! There were so many good cars tho… like the Ferrari Scuderia… SICK!

Love the Atom!
Car darts and Conkers were funny… and all the challenges with people shooting at Jeremy.
Pissing in the car during the 24 hour challenge was funny too.
People carrier convertibles and people carrier races were great too.
Also like “Turning cars into Boats” challenges.
TopGear is quality. When I get a chance to watch it, it’s entertaining.
That said, you see Gossip Girl last night?
Yes, yes I did.

Cal -7 vs. Miami, Total 49.5
Thoughts? I’ll have a writeup on the rest of the lines for the bowl contest later this week.
Lord Help Me
Why do I think Texas(-10) is way too high? Why am I inclined to bet tOSU?
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
T-bred…don’t do it…stay the hell away from that game. Too risky.
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
It is risky. It could go any which way. Terrelle Pryor could explode and run all over Texas’ defense or Colt McCoy could dominate OSU’s secondary…
No one knows how good Texas’ defense really is. Same with Oklahoma.
This is going to be a fun bowl season.
you forgot…
no one knows how good the Big 12 is because they play no one outside the conference until the bowl game.
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
No, that statement applies to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Chokelahoma still played TCU and Cincy OOC.
one could argue that doesn’t even tell us that much…Cincy has a fluff schedule and narrow wins, TCU has beaten BYU who barely beat UDub.
and the SEC stands for ‘See, Everyone’s Cheating."
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
that being said, OU came out as huge winners. In the preseason, everyone thought OU’s OOC schedule was very easy…and then Cincy became decent and TCU surprised a few folks.
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
That’s the thing the schedule is ultimately judged once the games are complete and it turns out TCU and Cincy had decent teams. I don’t think either is BCS worthy, but given the weak schedules in the SEC and Big12, that isn’t bad.
And got spanked by them.
Hell, if we’re going to keep harping on the Pac-10’s record against the MWC, what about the SEC’s pathetic record against the ACC, especially in the final week? Clemson over SouthCar? Wake over Vandy? GTech over Georgia? Someone needs to address these important issues!
it gets glossed over because the SEC is still most definitely “in” and the Pac10 pretends to be “in” so when they aren’t people like to hate (since they think this makes them astute).
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
ESPN has TV rights to SEC games in the future

Yes, yes, I know, Georgia is overrated, but Michigan State? They got gouged by Ohio State and Penn State.
Getting gouged by Alabama and Florida is a little better, and it’s understandable to lose to GTech since their defense is tough to defend. I guess I just don’t think Michigan State is very good.

I understand the financial dynamics. But, at least for me, rooting for a professional sports team is also about rooting for your city. For me, one of those teams is the Bills. They may move to Toronto. And, honestly, if they moved, I probably wouldn’t root for them anymore. What makes those players matter, what makes those games matter, for me, is that they play for Buffalo, or, in Twist’s case Oakland. In my case, for Buffalo, it is the only thing in a lot of people’s minds that keeps a once great city relevant every now and again on the national stage.
The Bills have become my team because they contain Marshawn
and the Niners failed to draft Aaron Rodgers

Merriman (at 11th overall) saved the day. There are some nice players, but the first 10 picks (outside of Braylon Edwards) are not very good…even Edwards’ has the dropsies.

Some of the later round players are really coming on… Roddy White, Rodgers, Heath Miller, Luis Castillo

Okay...
I’m going to deliver a very rare defense of Alex Smith.
Look, the idea was really a couple things. First, the Niners wanted a franchise QB after struggling with the likes of Cody Pickett. Niners had the #1 overall pick, which was obviously going to go to… Matt Leinart. But then a funny thing happened and he stayed in school. It was still between Rodgers and Smith at this point, but Smith was seen as a very intelligent football player who would run the offense intelligently.
He faced trouble adjusting from a spread offense at Utah to a conventional offense in the NFL. Then, he struggled as the Niners went through four offensive coordinators, but he was still relied upon to be the second coming of Steve Young. He improved and improved, then reached a promising level under the tutelage of Norv Turner. Turner left, but Smith carried on. He wasn’t spectacular, but he led the Niners to two wins in clutch (against the Cards and Rams), played a good game against the Steelers, then got injured against the Seahawks.
Dilfer was put in, but was even worse, so Nolan, in his worst move ever as hc, forced Smith back prematurely. And that’s when Smith looked worse then Tim Couch.
He started out this year injured too and hasn’t fully healed.
He still has a ton of potential, and I would like the Niners to hold onto him (at a reduced salary) and give him a chance later on (right now, Shaun Hill is the man).
It was still between Rodgers and Smith at this point, but Smith was seen as a very intelligent football player who would run the offense intelligently.
No one doubts Smith was mishandled when with the 9ers, and it affected him negatively. But that he was chosen over Rodgers in the first place is, in many minds, the most egregious error.

What do you mean his “intelligence”? He went to Utah…Rodgers went to Cal and had an amazing season. And he had one of the most amazing games ever vs. USC. “Smith was seen as a very intelligent football player who would run the offense intelligently.”??
And Rodgers was seen as a very retarded football player who would run the offense retardedly? I really don’t get it.

Sure, first it’s not as if there was a huge gap between Rodgers and Smith.
Rodgers had a great season – Smith was a finalist for the Heisman… from Utah.
He graduated with a degree in economics in two friggin’ years and scored 40 on his wonderlic.
But intelligence had to do more with the standard “makes good decisions, has the ability to complete crisp passes anywhere on the field”, along with his ability to tuck and run WHEN the play broke down (meaning he had mobility, but he wasn’t a run-first QB).
I don’t have access to Youtube, but watch him during the Fiesta Bowl. Sure it was against a pathetic Walt Harris-coached Pitt team, but it was impressive nonetheless.
I still maintain that A) Aaron Rodgers is a better QB, B) Alex Smith will become successful if given the right opportunities, and C) While it was not the right decision, I understand the thinking.
Yeah, but in retrospect throwing Rodgers in to play right away might have been just as disastrous. I see his current success as largely a product of his sideline time for a team committed to him.
absolutely it is better to spend
a couple years watching and practicing, but I don’t think that Rogers would have been called a bust had the 49’rs taken him.

I somewhat agree.
though, it was pretty clear from actually watching some of smith’s college play that he wasn’t used to reading the defense and then deciding on where the ball goes each play (a la the traditional bill walsh west coast offense). He was used to slinging the ball, and trusting that the defense couldn’t cover.
I think the 9’er would actualy have been better off with Rogers first, as the level of defense he was used to playing against was so much higher, and what they needed in part was a really good game manager, would could make the throws.

On another level, though, I thought Joe Flacco was going to be an NFL bust and he’s surprised me, in spite of his unconventional offense and the fact that he not only didn’t play against BCS competition, he also only played against D-1AA competition.

Of course there are certain players that I want to do well, that is, Cal guys. But, when it comes to a team, I need some sort of connection to root for them.
Well, some people just root for teams that are doing well. Hence how the Cowgirls became “America’s Team”.
I love how people can have a discussion about sports and someone asks me “What’s your favourite NFL team?” and I respond with “Niners”, their guy instinct is “Niners suck!”
I wasn’t aware being a fan of a team was predicated on them being good.
Ha, one time a guy asked me what basketball team I liked and I said the Warriors and he said “lol lakers rule warriors suck ur retard”.

Makes me hope...
…my next job is running one of these bowls. Lot of good research done for this article. You can really see how deep the bowl system runs. A quality quote from Tom Hansen on why the bowl system sucks:
“Bowls have always been commercial ventures by nature,” the Pac-10’s Hansen said. “They really don’t care about how good you are but about how many people you can bring.”
Then there’s Gary Cavalli, executive director of the San Francisco Bowl Game Association, which puts on the Emerald Bowl. Cavalli received $362,018 in compensation and employee benefits in 2006, accounting for 11 percent of the bowl’s budget. The game cleared $271,412. In a filing with the IRS, Cavalli said he works 35 hours a week.

Four conference commissioners – the Big East’s Mike Tranghese, the Big Ten’s Jim Delany, the Big 12’s Dan Beebe and the Pac-10’s Tom Hansen voted last spring to refuse to even discuss a forward-thinking plan brought forth by the ACC and SEC.
Tranghese and Hansen were pathetic enough to vote against the future only to promptly announce their retirements.

Interesting stats from Addicted To Quack:
2. You can have either Jacquizz Rodgers or Jahvid Best for one year. Which one do you want on your team?
As much as I like Jacquizz and fear his game over the next 3 years, I think I would take Jahvid Best. Both players have pretty equal stats in most categories. Best is more of a “big play” guy where Quizz is a 3-4 yards every play style back. For me, it comes down to options on offense and I think Best gives you the most opportunities on later downs. Best averages 7.6 yards on 1st down and 9.91 yards on second down. He picked up the 1st down on 63% of his chances at 3 yards or less. Quizz averages 4.97 and 4.89 yards per attempt on 1st and second downs respectively and averages 60% on his chances on 3rd down with 3 yards or less.
Outside of all the statistics, I like Best’s breakaway speed and big play nature. Quizz seems to get caught a little easier in the second level. Ask me this question in 2 years though and my answer may change.

Under no circumstance would I take Quizz over Jahvid. Faster, bigger, more breakaway speed, just as good in short yardage situations. Jahvid is also one heck of a special teams player. Quizz is a nice back, no doubt, but Jahvid was running behind a patchwork line all year and put up better numbers.

I made an inflammatory statement, I should back it up: basically, I think Jahvid is an amazing athlete. NO ONE is faster in the open field, and no one is a better back when there is good blocking. His speed is truly astounding, and given a top notch O-line and A+ blocking receivers, I would take Jahvid over Quizz in a heartbeat.
However, in our four losses this year, Jahvid was almost a nonfactor. Take out his two 60 yard TD runs vs. Arizona and OSU, respectively, and his average per carry vs. USC, Maryland, OSU, and Arizona is 3 ypc. Also, in those games, we managed just 20% on 3rd down conversions. Given our shaky passing attack, teams easily geared up to stop our biggest weapon, Jahvid. They did.
Naturally, for lesser-talented teams or rainy games, this situation was easily overcome. The passing game could gel just enough to make the DBs respect it (MSU), or our Oline could handle their Dline because, well, they just plain sucked on D (ASU, Wazzu, UW). Against UW and Wazzu Jahvid had a ridiculous FIVE HUNDRED yards rushing. There was no one to stop him getting into the open field, and once there, we know what happens.
However, in games when we NEEDED him to be able to win, we NEEDED those 4 or 5 yards for a first down, he could not find the holes or punch between the blocks to get those yards. Quizz could (and did, vs every team he encountered). And that’s why, given one game, I’d take him.

Jahvid did get hurt in the Maryland game… and by the time he got back on the field, we had to pass on every down.

yeah…I agree with your assessment of Best vs. Quizz….it’d be nice if Vereen had quizz’s 4-5 YPC with a narrow SD. Both Vereen and Best seem like runners not running backs. That being said, learning to be a running back is possible. It’s not possible to acquire freakish speed.
Kind of like how Greg Maddux won 355 games because he didn’t try to strike everyone out. He knew how to pitch.

I wouldn’t go as far to say Vereen and Jahvid are just runners… They definitely showed off balance and jukes as the season progressed. They’re just both on the small side and need age/experience/weight-training. They’re all purpose backs in the mold of spread offense WR/RBs like Percy Harvin

Woah, woah, woah. I always love when people conveniently take games away from someone’s overall performance and emphasize the games where the player underperformed. Quizz ran for only 54 yards at 3.9 YPC in a loss to Furd. He ran for 101 yards at 4.0 YPC in a loss to PSU (that includes a 33 yard gain, take that out and Quizz averaged less than 3 yards). Even against “lesser” opponents like Hawaii and UW, Quizz didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard. Yeah, he outperformed Best against USC, but Jahvid outperformed him against Furd.
My point is, both guys, when they face a stiff test, didn’t put up the numbers needed for their teams to win (PSU for Quizz and USC for Jahvid). You can’t jkust take games away and point to only one guy’s struggle. When the season ends, the stats finish compiling, it’s helpful that way. And, by every measure, Jahvid stands above Quizz. Yards. Yards Per Carry. Touchdowns. Receptions. Receiving Yards. Receiving Touchdowns. Kickoff Returns.
OSU didn’t “need” to win PSU… And yeah, that game against Stanford was brutal for Quizz, but it was his only crappy game.

Oh, not one is blaming Jahvid Best for losing games.
He didn’t even lose the Maryland game for us. That’s the o-line’s fault. But he didn’t win the game for us either. On the flip side, Quizzno’s won the USC game.
Maryland was the humidity
And I would posit that Best won Big Game for us…hard to win a game when your receivers combine for ZERO yards if you don’t have a running back who can go for 200.

Again, right, only one game on the schedule counts. I see, and only the ones you deem important matter. And where OSU lost, that doesn’t matter either, unless it is against oregon and you think Quizz could play defense too.
Who knows, maybe if Quizz was in that game they could have held Oregon on D for significantly longer than otherwise?
As far as I see it he only had one really bad game, against ‘Furd. And Penn State >>> Maryland, so I’ll forgive him for that, too.

I think Jahvid would have done better than Quizz on OSU, but Quizz would have done better than Jahvid in the games we didn’t have good run-blocking
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
But, again, you say Best is only good with good protection. Why can’t the same be argued of Quizz? Jahvid has a far worse offensive line this season, especially against USC. Did you not see our o-line get destroyed in that game?
I watched it… Quizz had much better chances than Jahvid ever had.
And Quizz’s effectiveness was limited to the first half. He had a few decent runs in the second, but the SC defense royally adjusted
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
Indeed, I just don’t think one game outweighs an entire season of work. And, i think Quizz benefited from a much better and more consistent line than Jahvid.
Jahvid had a good line at Maryland.
Explain Maryland and Penn State to me, especially considering that PSU>>>>Maryland.
The simple explanation is that Best played worse in 1 OOC game than Quizz played in another.
Given that the question is would you rather have Best or Quizz over 1 year, you have to look at the stats over 1 year.

I stick by my original thesis: given top-notch blocking and Oline play, I’d take Best (ie against crappy defenses).
Otherwise, I’d take Quizz, as evidenced by the fact that he destroyed SC and is better in short-yardage situations.
Sheriff of the Welcome Team
In Spite of Twist!
But, would Quizz have “destroyed” SC with a weaker line? And, over the season, Best has actually been better than Quizz in short yardage as evidenced above. You have one game, I got a whole season as proof.
Would Quizz have done so poorly against Maryland with a completely healthy line?

this is a good point
my point was more along the lines of, every prep QB that comes along is going to be our savior (Riley, then Mansion, probably not Sweeney, but definitely now Bridgford), and then they all struggle in their first years as they pick up the offense.
I’m not sure how any of them will turn out in the long run, but we over hype all of them while they’re still in high school and then criticize them unnecessarily when they don’t throw 30 TDs in their second year.

Brock called me to let me know he just committed and he put Coach Tedford on the phone and they were hootin’ and hollerin’ and having a good old time," laughed Mansion. “Coach Tedford said that this was the biggest quarterback he ever had that could move like Brock can. Brock runs a 4.7 forty and weighs 230 pounds right now and doesn’t have an ounce of fat on him. He loves the weight room and loves his workouts. He just turned 18. When it’s all said and done, I think he (Tedford) will have a 6-5/245-50 quarterback that can really run and throw the ball.”
Mansion’s father cited a play last season where Brock ran wide left and flicked the ball across his body 60 yards down the field for a completion as ample evidence of his arm strength and athleticism. Mansion’s impressive totals of 2,000 passing yards to go along with 1,000 rushing yards also bore testimony to Mansion’s unique combination of size, speed and strength.

MARSHAWN
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
by Thoroughbred on Dec 9, 2008 2:45 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
Ok, since Rishi wont do it, I had to. Math hurts Twist brain.
Jahvid Best: Overall 174 for 1394
MSU 24 for 111
Md 10 for 25
CSU 11 for 85
Pac10 Only 129 for 1173 for an average of 9.09 (over a yard higher than his actual average, which is interesting)
Quizz: Overall 259 for 1253
PSU 22 for 99
Hawii 26 for 110
Utah 25 for 101
Pac10 Only 186 for 943 for an average of 5.06
So, if you look at similar opponents only, figuring that as the sample size increases, so does the relevance of the numbers, then Best averages 4 yards a carry more than Quizz. Perhaps Quizz’s running style is more of a bruising one than Best, sure. Nobody disputes that. But taking out non-common opponents only further strengthens the argument that Best is the better back.
Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
And, to be fair, here are my statistics:
Best v/ Quizz YPC
Wazzou: 14.3 v 7.3 Big Deal
ASU: DNP v 4.4
Zona: 6.7 v 5 (only four carries)
UCLA: 6.8 v 4.6
Oregon: 5.8 v DNP
USC: 2.3 v 5.0 (THERE WE GO)
Furd: 10.6 v 3.9 (Quizz’s first game)
UDub: 16.4 v 4.7
And, for fun, let’s pretend Maryland and PSU were the same team:
OOC: 2.5 v 4.5
And the number say what Spazzy and I have been saying all along: Best has better big play capability, but he can be shut down. Quizzno’s cannot.
I appreciate the work you put into that Rishi. It is very informative. But again, you are cherry picking stats here. Let’s look at the whole season. Especially considering that the question is “Which one for a year?”
Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
I appreciate the work you put into that Twist It is very informative. But again, you are skewing the data with outliers. Let’s look at the whole season. Especially considering that the question is "Who is more consistent?"
“2. You can have either Jacquizz Rodgers or Jahvid Best for one year. Which one do you want on your team?”
That is the question. Over the span of a year, Best had more yards and averaged more yards per carry. Over the span of Pac10 only opponents, Best had more yards and averaged more yards per carry.
Your definition of “outlier” appears to be any game that doesn’t prove your point. Why is this?
Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
Because the outliers prove that Jahvid Best has big-play capability, which is not a topic of disagreement.
While Jahvid’s low output at Maryland and USC prove he can be shut down or taken out of the gameplan, while Quizzno’s cannot.
It was his first game! And he got 14 carries.
And even that game had a better YPC than Jahvid’s performances at USC and Maryland.
Next year will be the real test
Let us see how USC handles Quizz when they know what they’re dealing with, and let’s see how Best performs with a healthy offensive line and a respectable passing game.
And before someone says Maryland, games played in a swamp are outliers.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
Fair enough. I still think the numbers point towards Best by such an outrageous margin that it is difficult to argue towards Quizz. If it was close and Best had gotten most of his yards in the one half he played against UDub and the one half he played against WSU, Id prolly be in your boat.
But since Best is so much better statistically I still think Best is the way to go.
Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
Honestly, I take Best over Quizz for his abilities to play on the wings and be motioned out of the backfield. If he hadn’t been hurt for a good portion of the year, I think we would have seen him line up to catch passes more. Unfortunately, having his arm in a sling prevented this.
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
That is true, these numbers don’t include receiving stats. Not sure if Quizz gets as many receptions as Best does.
Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
I think everything is pretty simple
Jahvid gives you a huge chance for big plays and quick points, but he can also kill drives with negative yardage plays.
Quizzno’s doesn’t not give you the quick strike benefit, but he almost never loses yardage and is more reliable in short-yardage.
I think they style of offense determines who you want. Not some PERSONAL STATS match-up
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
As in boxing where styles make fights, that’s probably true here. Though, I think Jahvid can produce against SC if he had the same blocking Quizz had earlier this season.
And, also, Jahvid is a much better pass-catcher, despite the statistics. Like Vereen, he can run wheel routes and line-up as a receiver and demand attention.
Quizz got all his yards on dump-offs.
This is why Jahvid would probably be ideally suited in Oregon’s offense. I think he would have gone over 2000 yards on fewer carries this year in that system.
You ain't got it like Marshawn got it
Do we need a DBD2? Rishi, you wanna practice your DBDing skills for tomorrow?

SBN does not give us special tools to do that
