Cal events for the Emerald Bowl!
Hooray! We are going across the bay for the Emerald Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 27th. The California Alumni Association (CAA) in conjunction with Athletics is planning a variety of fun events for everyone to enjoy. We hope you will join us and also help plan one of the events by taking the attached poll.
All the info about the events, travel packages, merchandise, etc. is here:
I've included more information below the fold.
Most importantly, the official Cal tailgate information will be up this Friday, Dec. 12th. Sandy Barbour will speak to the crowd, the full Cal Band will play for us, and we will eat and drink until our bellies are full! :)
Here are some fun tidbits from the official Emerald Bowl binder that I thought you would enjoy - in no particular order:
* The Pac-10 ticket allotment is 11,500 tickets which has all been sold to football season ticket holders and big donors, and includes tickets for the band & students. There was no limit on the number of tickets one person could buy. Cal Athletics is currently trying to buy tickets from Miami to sell to our fans. (Miami only got 10,000 tickets.)
* The entire Cal Marching Band is attending and will be performing a pre-game and half-time show. Each school is allotted 6 minutes total for each of these performances. They will be sitting in sections 136 and 137 (bleachers). The Miami band will be in section 119.
* Both team benches are on the same sideline (east-ish). I'm not sure if then the coaches can venture up and down the entire length of the field...
* The Pac-10 Team hotel is the San Francisco Marriott at 55 Fourth Street. Due to another conference, the hotel is completely sold out which we all think is BS. Our travel partner (GetTravel) has reserved rooms at the nearby Westin San Francisco Market Street (previously the Argent Hotel). The Cal Band hotel is Hotel 480 at 480 Sutter Street.
* Miami's team hotel is the Hyatt Regency San Francisco. Their band is at the Hilton Fisherman's Wharf.
* Cal will be the home team and wear dark jerseys. They will also get the Giants "home" locker room.
* Each Cal football player gets a gift bag from the bowl (this is true for all bowls). The Emerald Bowl gift bag includes: Fossil watch with bowl logo ($105), Sony noise cancelling headphones ($199), Armor Gear Rolling Sherpa ($189), and Sports Cap with bowl logo ($13).
* Cal will practice at Memorial Stadium, but will stay in San Francisco starting on Monday, Dec. 22nd. Besides press conferences and practices, the fun things the players get to do are: 2-hour Alcatraz tour, Team Dinner at Bistro Boudin Restaurant at Fisherman's Wharf, California Pacifc Medical Center Children's Hospital visit (select players), Friday rally, & Kick-off Luncheon. The coaches, coaches' wives, and kids have more activities as well.

I think it’d be interesting to do a Saturday pub crawl. Keep us updated with the info for the official tailgate, though.
PS, what does your username mean anyway? Is it Oski’s piss or something?
it's from the old oski yell
“oski wow wow
wiskey wee wee
oleo berkeley-i, oleo mackey-i

obviously there was alcohol involved in the creation of this yell.

Some of California's best beer
My family and I will be drinking early and often at the 21A. No need to go anywhere else. Co-founder Shaun O’Sullivan started his brewing career in Berkeley at the Triple Rock, and he is a hero among us homebrewers as both sponsor and contributor to the online Brewing Network.
Love the beer. Love the Bears.

The Wii is fucking awesome and is the best system out of the three consoles
Only a kick ass gaming PC is better.
And before you say it I own a PS3, 360, Wii, a gaming PC and I have a 1080p HDTV and my systems are connected via HDMI (or component in the Wii’s case)
In other words, Go Bears!
You have all those gaming systems and you go to Cal?
This is a complete stereotype, but you aren’t in fact, Asian, are you?

Then again, I used to be a huge gamer and stopped playing games my freshman year. Now I only play Madden and that too Madden 08 since they stopped making them for PC.
When I get some more money, I’ll get a 360 just because it’s easy to play (I don’t want to have to stand up and jump around after work – I want to sink into my couch and collect dust).

I want to be a tourist in SF for a day…
Walk along the Embarcadero, buy t-shirts for $4 that will fade after two washes, eat at Boudin and Alioto’s, go on the turbo ride at Pier 39, jump on a Cable Car, bike across the Golden Gate, drive down Lombard Street, take a ferry to Alcatraz, walk around Japanese Tea Gardens…
Man, I miss when the city had that kind of mystery and wonder. Now it’s just “walk home, ignore the nice surroundings, jump in a dirty cab, stand in line outside a club for an hour, drink myself silly, wake up, walk to work”. Bah.
Cal will be the home team and wear dark jerseys. They will also get the Giants “home” locker room.
That’s cool. I hope they go with the all blues. Or maybe even the gold tops and blue pants. But perhaps the gold jerseys should be saved for Memorial?

We wore our Gold jerseys and whipped Texas A&M.
Besides, we haven’t worn them since Oregon. We’re due to wear them again, and BLIND THE COMPETITION.

Why are they putting up the entire band in a hotel?
It’s like a 30 minute bus ride. Actually, the band should take over an entire BART train. That would be awesome. Does anybody know if the band is doing a pregame concert like they do on Sproul before home games?
Go Bears!
by RollOnYouBears667 on Dec 8, 2008 6:30 PM PST reply actions
the band hasn't decided which nights they may spend in a hotel
pros:
- it’s fun for the students to be in a hotel and get that “bowl” experience
- all the students are in one place which makes it easier to get from one place to another
cons:
- expensive
- marching rehearsals are in Berkeley
There will not be a Sproul concert. Since school isn’t in session, it will be fairly dead on campus. Also, band members will be coming back to Berkeley on Christmas night, then on the 26th it’s a full day of performances and rehearsals. 27th (gameday) will be morning rehearsals and performances.
Band members who are living in the dorms would have nowhere to stay (well, they would have to crash at the Band house or at other people’s houses), since the dorms are off-limits to students over the winter break.
All residence halls will be closed and all residents must vacate the halls by 10 am upon commencement of the Semester Break. Students are not allowed to remain in the buildings during break due to energy curtailment. Residents are permitted to leave their belongings in the halls, at their own risk. Students may move back into the halls at 8 am on the designated move-in day for spring semester.
Starts 10AM December 21st.
It's seriously too bad that there's no building or complex around that might have a large supply of sports drinks.
as a former excommie....
it is SSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier to get everyone where they need to be when in a Hotel.
Typically the Bowl pays for the Hotel, and some per diem…..
As far as pregame concert stuff….likely they will play at some of the tailgates, before heading into the stadium.

Anybody tailgating?
And where can we do so? Does anyone know if that huge parking lot across from the mini-bridge (off of 3rd St. I think) will be open to the public?
Let’s tailgate in droves Cal fans! Show those Floridians how serious we west-coasters are about college football!
Probably should’ve done a little research before asking. From the Emerald Bowl web site:
2,500 parking spaces available in Parking Lots A and D, as well as Pier 48. These lots are operated by Imperial Parking Corporation. Additional Parking is available north of the ballpark at Piers 30/32 (Embarcadero at Bryant) and south of ballpark at the UCSF garage (Southbound 3rd Street just north of 16th Street).

although we don't know the price of the official Cal tailgate yet...
… we are hoping to keep it reasonable (duh) so many Cal fans of all ages will join us. We’ll have that info up on Friday, so if you can hold off until then to make plans and give us a chance, that would be hella cool. :D www.alumni.berkeley.edu/bowl
bear "pub" crawl pass for $5?
would paying $5 for a bear crawl pass effect you participating? This would enable you to get the drink and food discounts at each of the 3-4 bars. Just-a curious.
depends on the drink deals, i guess
perhaps it’s time for another poll…
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
No, I’m going to buy a 24 pack of Bud Light (drinkability!) and shotgun every single one of them in the parking lot.
I played DeSean over Tashard Choice, thinking the Dallas backup RB against Pitt D was a bad play. Tha1 was equally as bad, because he got me 0 points. Choice would have gotten me 16. It wasnt going to matter until Antonio Bryant BLEW UP for like 38 points. And I lost by 5.

I could have told you Tashard Choice would have a monster day.
But I don’t play fantasy football. I find it’s detrimental to my love of football when I’m rooting for the Niners to beat the Jets, but rooting for Brett Favre to throw as many touchdowns as possible.
Really? A monster day against the Steelers D.

I was a big fan of Tashard Choice in college.
I think it’s a good idea for NFL teams to draft a fast RB from college on the second day, use him as a special third back, then keep getting a new one every couple years.
He WAS studly in college
but the Steelers D has eaten up just about every RB this year, no matter how many touches RB gets

Although, in all honesty, part of that has to also do with lack of film available on Choice, making it harder to game plan for him.

by Rocksanddirt on Dec 10, 2008 5:06 PM PST up reply actions
We didn’t actually start using it until 1914. It was supposedly written in 1913 for a song contest held by the Daily Cal, but was not selected. We used to play Montana in the PCC, so theoretically after one meeting either us or them could have copied it.
After further reading, GT didn’t start playing their song until after we played them in the 1929 Rose Bowl. The timeline would suggest that GT got it from us.
There are no more accurate dates than the years, so who knows what really happened. Timelines and dates can be misleading.
Even the Cal Band website admits that “the tune appears to be unoriginal.”
