Thoroughbred, why are you disturbing people's perceptions
Can’t you let them be content with the image of Longshore as a bumbling quarterback who can’t do anything right?
Actually, his performance tonight confirmed that suspicion.
He didn’t win the game for us… the big play on defense by Pain Train got it back to Nate with 1st and goal. I don’t think Nate could have drove 80 yards to that spot in the 4Q.
Plus, we wern’t going to pass anymore anyway… we need to rest the D and burn the block up by 3 at the time. So when we NEEDED him during the first 3 quarters… he was very ineffective and killed drives by not finding his WRs.
It was a strange gameplan. Best didn’t get the ball nearly enough for three quarters.
by BearsNecessity on Dec 27, 2008 8:51 PM PST up reply actions
But he was getting banged up and breathing hard at the end.
I know Vereen fumbled but given his performance at the end (of course, we don’t know how much of that is from their run D being exhausted trying to keep up with Best), it might have been worthwhile to let Vereen get a couple more touches to keep Best fresh.
That being said, I do agree that we did focus a bit too much on passing near the end of the second quarter.
I like Vereen late more for the fact that he has fresh legs
and will be able to run well against any tired D

Also, Vereen’s fumble not really his fault. I was watching on TV and the Miami defender ripped it out of there really well. Vereen had two hands buckled around that ball like a fighter jet seatbelt.
Remember, the enemy's end zone is DOWN!
Agreed
Shane had both hands on the ball… the guy yanked so hard he lifted Shane into the air… did you see that?
So, this isn’t Nate Longshore:

Speaking of post game reactions
Miami internet fans have to be the most wild swinging fan base in terms of emotions. It goes from depression and anger to euphoria and arrogance and then back to depression and anger.

As long as you have a scout registered user name you should be able to read it...
But I’ll go through it and look for some quotes.
Early game quotes.
“O-line isn’t blocking worth a crap. Everything to the outside is going for a loss.”
“We’re done fellas. Nix is calling the game not to lose.”
“Has Nix been fired yet? If not, he should have been fired after that play. Shannon needs to grab him by the shirt and point him toward the end zone.”
“Does our defense employ any safeties? I’ve never seen a play like that go for a touchdown.”
“That was the worst angle I have ever seen in my life.”
“we have bend but dont break defense that breaks alot” – lol this quote sounds… familiar.
More early game.
“can we please not wait until the 4th qtr before we start playing with some fire?
weve been sleepwalking out there for five seasons
wake up!!!”
“Jailbreak on our QB”
“Oh Lord.” — lol.
“somebody please block the crazy white guy” – BRING ON THE PAIN TRAIN! WOO!
“This tea, sucks in every facet right now. Time to turn it around fellas.”
“Game over. What a joke.”
"good night

I don’t blame Tedford at all with Riley limping around. Tedford did the smart thing by going for it on that 4th down … and he decided not to let Nate throw during that long drive to give our D some rest. He did the best he could with a shill at QB.
Haha, brilliant.
That really was poor clock management by Miami to end the first half. Seriously, I can manage the clock better.
I have no new information on that at this time.
Awesome.

Nate’s pass was intended for Miller. I know people will squawk and say he overthrew Morrah, but Miller ran a perfect route. Nate saw him in the zone and threw a strike. We’ve run this play before

+1
Morrah was double covered… Miami watched the film before the game… they know Nate to Morrah is the call… so going to Miller from all the way from the weak side was the wise call for us.
Damn, what a game guys.
Also, the tailgate was awesome.
I don’t care about Longshore – whatever, Riley was limping. I made sure to let everyone know that.

But I actually think Longshore played an average game. Not good, not bad. But he didn’t throw a pick, read the Tucker route right, and had some good completions to Boateng, along with selling the playfake to Best on the game winning TD. He’s played just as well as he had all year—average. Another C game for him.

Hrmmm...
I dunno.
It depends on whether you’re saying it’s an average game for HIM or an average game in general, i.e. compared to the rest of the D1 QBs participating in the bowl games?
If the former, then, yes, I agree. This game was about average and maybe even a bit above average for Longshore. He scored the TD on that last play when we needed it, no pick 6’s or even interceptions, and read some decent routes.
If the latter, then no. He missed way too much, either mechanically or picking the wrong receiver. At the point where your QB is not a threat to pass to the other team, then he’s performing pretty badly. I would say below average in comparison to other QBs.
It’s becoming clear that Longshore’s success the past two seasons was based on the talent of his receivers and the o-line protection. When he doesn’t get production from either position he is mediocre.
by BearsNecessity on Dec 27, 2008 9:33 PM PST up reply actions
I wonder if part of the problem is
that he’s a theoretical QB? I’m going to ignore the mechanical issues for now and talk about the type of QB Longshore is. It seems like he knows all the things to do IN THEORY. For example, one of the responses we heard all last season was that it wasn’t his fault because the WR ran a bad route, etc. The important thing here is perhaps that he can’t adapt very well to conditions on the field. And in a sense, this is exactly what you said but slightly more focused on Longshore himself.
Yeah, there’s nothing wrong with that. He’s probably meant to be a QB coach more than a QB; he internalizes his play like a machine and figures out his mistakes as he goes along. It’s good for a coach. That’s probably not as good for a game quarterback.
It’s like when you run too many programs on a computer. It slows down and crashes.

Practice QB
This idea makes sense given the reported “improvements” in his practices that Tedford keeps claiming. Passing along a cliche – It’s one thing to do it in practice and another to do it in a game.
10/21 with 121 yards is average?
Not to mention we had 11 first downs ALL game, 80% of which were attributable to a Best run. Pretty sad that our standars have dropped this low.
I wish Nate the best in life, but I am thankful we will not have him at QB in the future.
The team, absent Longshore, played excellently.

The one thing that burns me up about Jahvid
is that he acquires a new injury every 20 carries. Aside from this, he really showed how much more complete he is than I had originally thought.
That said, I still think Vereen is more than capable, and I expect big things from him next year in both the passing and running games.

Vereen’s here for another 3, if I’m not mistaken. I wonder what we’re gonna do with Yarnway and Sofele…
Anyhow, I agree with your assessment of Vereen. Whenever (or most of the time) he takes it up the middle, I can expect him to bounce off a couple of defenders and find him further downfield than I expected him to be. Jahvid tends to go down a lot quicker in those situations.
by BleedinBlue on Dec 27, 2008 10:04 PM PST up reply actions
Agreed. Shane Vereen seems to be able to get those extra 2 yards that he’s not supposed to get. Best lacks that ability. Best makes better plays in the open field, but there is still a lot to like about Vereen.
by JohnnyCalifornia on Dec 27, 2008 11:48 PM PST up reply actions
Kinda thought that Vereen was pretty awful until the Miami Defense got completely worn down. Fumble, botched half-back pass, lots of getting stopped at the line in the first three quarters. Vereen is a good back overall, but there honestly is no comparison between the two.

I'm probably in a sour mood
but I thought it was a pedestrian home win against a Miami team that didn’t impressive me.
With Best putting on a show and the defense its usual effective self, it would have embarrassing to lose a home game to that team. I guess it’s progress that I am complaining about something like this.
I always hated the vitriol directed at Longshore, but had to admit I was increasingly frustrated at our inability to generate offense – outside of the early pass – that didn’t involve handing the ball to Best. Perhaps Riley was injured. But I have to admit some relief that he will be gone. Tedford seemed to have some weird attachment to him that wasn’t justified by his performance.
That said, Nate didn’t make any crushing mistakes and it was pretty ironic that he made a difficult and good throw for the game-winning touchdown. I was happy for him about that in his last game.
For next season, the offense is going to have to be a lot better.
It was nice meeting you all at the tailgate
And the game was weird.
If it weren’t for a bunch of stupid non-calls by the refs, that faker of a punter and Longshore’s slip then this wouldn’t have been close.
Oh well we won.
Also too much vitriol at Longshore. FOCUS ON CONTE. He gave up TWO FUCKING TDs!!!

General thoughts
Best was the entire offense. Period. Longshore completed two actual passes as far as I remember – one of which was only completed because Boateng happened to fall down in the right place. As someone said in my section after Longshore feel on his ass – “If he doesn’t get taken out now, I am assuming there are sexual favors involved.”
The defense was fine but got worn down a tad bit over time. The Pain Train was great. The position that Gregory created for him is one of the best positions in college football – I have a feeling that we are going to have a long line of great linebackers at that spot in the 3-4. The play by Hagan and Conte had me flashing back to our secondary in the early Tedford years.

I’m so pumped we won…sorry I haven’t been able to comment to much…I’m very proud of this years team. and I look forward to an awesome 2009! Best had a great game against a fast D which is very encouraging. I’m going to miss the Pain Train but I’m excited about Mohamed et al.
The thing I’m most worried about (like everyone else) is the QB. I don’t care who starts as long as that person plays better than any 2008 QB we saw.
Riley, I believe, is a talented passer but I worry his mental game is shot to hell by a combination of inept play and sporadic benchings.
Mansion seems like a physical wonder but 9er fans remember Jim Druckenmiller…
Like I said, a QB who can complete 60% passes, and move the ball on 3rd down will work for me. Best will take care of the rest.

Wait, did you seriously just realise this?
It only happens for big games, though (Wazzou in 07 was a “big game” for us given the three-game slides we went on before and after).
I have no new information on that at this time.
It isn’t exactly something I think about a lot.

It's 8-0
We wore gold jerseys in the ’06 win against Fucla.
Realizing just how much Aaron Rodgers spoiled us.
Right you are.
I forgot about that game.

Much fun at the tailgate!
Thanks for all who showed up, and especially to Rags for setting it all up. At some point I’ll try to put together a fan post with copious fotos taken by my lovely lady, along with various observations from the 4th row in the ‘left field’ endzone.

Does that narrow it down? We left at around 3:45, maybe 45 minutes after you got in?
