DBD 12.18.07 Let Me Be The First to Apologize
Believe it or not, I had a dream about TwistNHook last night. Well, I guess TwistNHook was in my dreams - which is pretty traumatizing.
In my dream, TwistNHook got really mad at me and grabbed me and was like trying to choke me. It was odd and scary.
I messaged TwistNHook this morning when I woke up and in response to me telling him that he was choking me in my dream, he said: "you probably deserved it."
And you know, he's right.
I deserved it. I've been a horrible co-blogger lately. I haven't been posting a lot. I didn't bring home my DVDs of this season's games to do analysis posts. My DBDs have been link-less and inane. I've been off studying for finals instead of doing posts for the blog. I rag on Twist's photo skillz. I endlessly say he's a horrible lawyer when in fact he is a fantastic high paid corporate lawyer earning more than what most of us make in two years. I constantly make fun of Twist's pink scarf but aside from that, Twist is one of the most fashionable people I know.
Yes, I've hardly been an ideal lover friend.
So, TwistNHook, let me be the first to apologize for my actions and inactions.
I apologize.
Please, please don't tell me it's too late for me to apologize.
Please don't tell me it will be like this:
Can we still be together friends?
Please?
Now for the good stuff:
On December 15th, I said Tim Tebow was probably a 3rd Round pick in the NFL Draft as a QB:
The guy, as a QB, is probably a 3rd round pick at the highest. He’s clearly a project. He is not a polished passer. He has a slow delivery/throwing motion. He hasn’t lived in a pro-style offense. I just don’t see him making a significant impact for at least 3 years after 3 years of significant playing time. Project! Project! Project!
On December 16th, Mel Kiper says Tim Tebow will probably be a 3rd Round pick as a QB:
I’d say third or fourth round worst-case scenario, second round as a best case. Probably a third-rounder.
Obviously, Mel Kiper reads this blog. Or, I am Mel Kiper. Or, we both just thought the same thing. What do you think?
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Tebow is the possibly the best college football player we’ve seen recently and yet almost everyone agrees he won’t be a good NFL quarterback. Not that I don’t see why, obviously his mechanics are kinda wacky and he drops back and then steps into his throw once a millennium but aren’t these things that with a quality QB coach can be fixed? His knowledge of the game seems high, but could this be a case of Alex Smith/Urban Meyer syndrome being applied to Tebow?
I get the feeling that if Tebow does stay at QB in the NFL, it would have to be somewhere like Tampa Bay or Carolina where he could get a few years to sit, or somewhere with a QB coach who wouldn’t be afraid to start his mechanics over from scratch. He’s also gonna have to get used to more complicated pass rush schemes, which will change his style dramatically.
And on another point, does anyone want to take CS188/Math110 finals for me so I can go home?
http://mymindgrapes.wordpress.com
I think Tebow will want to stay at QB. It’s the position he’s played and gained all his experience and knowledge. I don’t think that position will suit him well. So much of his success is also the fact that he’s in a great system surrounded by great talent. He won’t be able to do as much in the NFL because he’ll be facing better defenders everywhere on the field, and he’ll be required to throw more and that’s something he doesn’t do entirely that well – not well enough to be a rookie starter or perhaps even a 3rd year starter.
I think he might be better off in an offense that’s suited more to him, rather than him suited to an NFL pro-style offense. Unfortunately for him, no NFL teams really have an offense like Florida’s.

Tebow can succeed in the NFL. But coaches will have to adapt their system around him.

We are forgetting the "he is Tim Tebow" factor
It seems the kid refuses to let himself fail, and I think the NFL would be no different. He’s got a good head on his shoulders and a smokin’ hot girlfriend. God I hate Tim Tebow
I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Giorgio Tavecchio profiled in the Chronicle today. He seems like quite the character and I have to admit, he has been above average on field goals. I just wish he could get the ball to the endzone on kickoffs. That said, he does use a lot of hand gestures:
The words pour out of Tavecchio in an unaffected but accented stream, accompanied by hand gestures. He is as amazed as anyone that he’s a bowl-bound college football player, that he’s 8-for-11 on field goals after assuming that duty midway through the season.

After months of mulling over his final recruiting decision, Seattle (Wash.) Garfield high school defensive line prospect Deandre Coleman made it official tonight. A member of the Rivals100, Coleman, who was recently honored with an invitation to play in the 2009 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, is going to call Berkeley his next home.
3 stars by Scout, 4 stars by Rivals, Rivals Top 100 playa, and All American
Oregon, SC, Texas A&M, the Arizona schools, and Colorado were also pursuing him.
2.5 GPA, claims he doesn’t know his ACT score…I’m sure Tedford does.
He might be a smidge tall (@ 6’4") but he’s “only” 285…so I bet he could get bigger and be a two-gap NT

It makes no sense. He notes how much better the team handled adversity than last year. Cal had 2 more regular season wins this year than last, in a rebuilding year no less. And, he even believes Cal will finish no worse than third in the conference next year. But, apparently, the program is trending downward. He also fails to mention breaking ground on facilities and the solid recruiting class coming into the program. But, I digress.

Mens bball to take on NEvada, Colgate:
Nevada Wolf Pack (6-4) at California Golden Bears (7-2)
Saturday, Dec. 20, 3 p.m. / Haas Pavilion, Berkeley, Calif.
Radio: KYOU (1550 AM)
TV: Nevada Sports Network
Colgate Raiders (3-6) at California Golden Bears
Monday, Dec. 22, 8 p.m. / Haas Pavilion, Berkeley, Calif.
Radio: KYOU (1550 AM)
TV: none
California returns to Haas Pavilion this week after a 10-day break, hosting Nevada on Saturday, Dec. 20, at 3 p.m. and Colgate on Monday, Dec. 22, at 8 p.m. The Golden Bears (7-2) look to carry the momentum after last week’s thrilling 72-69 victory over Utah into their matchup with the Wolf Pack.
Following their second loss of the season at Missouri on Dec. 7, the Bears rebounded with an impressive win at Utah on Dec. 10. Junior G Jerome Randle’s three-pointer with six seconds left proved to be the difference, breaking a 69-all tie. Cal now has the luxury of finishing its nonconference schedule and opening the first week of Pac-10 play in Berkeley.
VBall All Americans:
The California volleyball team had two players honored as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced the 28th annual AVCA Division I All-American Teams for women’s volleyball today. Junior outside hitter Hana Cutura became a two-time All-American with her selection to the first team and sophomore setter Carli Lloyd received her first All-America nod and became Cal’s first All-American setter with her selection to the second team. While Lloyd is Cal’s sixth AVCA All-American, the pair receives Cal’s 10th and 11th All-America honors, marking just the second time in school history that the Golden Bears have had two players selected in the same year.
Each of the three AVCA All-America Teams is comprised of 14 athletes. The Division I AVCA National Player of the Year will be announced on Dec. 19 at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet.
Stanford senior middle blocker Foluke Akinradewo and Penn State senior outside hitter Nicole Fawcett headline this year’s selections, as they were the only four-time AVCA All-America honorees, each having earned three-consecutive first-team nods and a second-team distinction in 2005. Joining Akinradewo and Fawcett in making their third-straight first-team selection is Stanford senior outside hitter Cynthia Barboza, Penn State junior outside hitter Megan Hodge and UCLA senior setter Nellie Spicer.
Women bball to take on baylor:
The California Golden Bears hung on to a spot in the top 10 in the national rankings in one of this week’s national polls, while sliding just outside the top 10 in the other. After the loss to No. 5/6 Oklahoma, the Bears, fell out of the top 10 in the Associated Press poll, tumbling to No. 12, but managed to stay in the top 10 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ poll, coming in at No. 9. The Bears spent two weeks (weeks 2-3) with a program-best No. 3 ranking, but fell to No. 9/7 after being handed their first loss of the season Sunday, Dec. 7 by No. 22 TCU, 82-73.
The Bears will take on their fourth ranked opponent of the season and have a chance to move back up in the polls when they face No. 7 Baylor on Monday, Dec. 22. Cal has six wins over ranked opponents since 2005-06 and an overall 6-17 mark over that same span. When facing top 10 teams, the Bears are just 2-10, with this season’s victory over Rutgers and the 2006-07 victory over No. 8 Stanford accounting for those two W’s. Over the last four seasons, Cal has gone 35-7 in its regular season nonconference games with only one loss, a 55-49 game against New Mexico in the preseason WNIT coming at the hands of a non-ranked opponent.
The game against Baylor has a special 5 p.m. tip time as the Cal men’s basketball team will host Colgate at 8 p.m. in Haas Pavilion on the same day. Fans with tickets to the women’s basketball game are invited to stay for the men’s game that follows, with section 23 open for them for general admission seating.
Cal is coming off a long break, eight days without a game. Cal is 17-8 in the game after such a long extended break. Since 2005-06 when Coach Boyle took over the program, Cal is 1-2 in the game after December’s break. Last season, Cal was in a very similar situation with its last game before the break being a heartbreaking loss to a ranked team, their 56-51 loss at No. 3 Rutgers. The Bears rebounded with a 74-41 victory at Kansas 11 days later. In the previous two seasons, Cal finished with a victory before finals week, then came back right before Christmas with an opening loss in Pac-10 play, falling in overtime at UCLA, 77-68, in 2006 and at Washington, 62-55, in 2005. The last time the Bears had a chance to shake off the rust at home was a 67-60 victory over Hampton in 2004.

3rd best bball team:
In the 100th season of Cal basketball, we continue our countdown of the greatest teams in school history. Today: No. 3.
3. 1992-93.
Team’s record: 21-9.
Achievements: Cal advances past first weekend of NCAA tournament for the first time since 1960 before losing to Kansas in the Sweet 16.
Record vs. Stanford: 2-0.
Record vs. UCLA: 1-1.
Coaches: Lou Campanelli (10-7) and Todd Bozeman (11-2).
Top players: G Jason Kidd (13.0 ppg, 7.7 apg), F Lamond Murray (19.1 ppg), C Btian Hendrick (10.4 ppg, 7.4 rpg), F Al Grigsby (10.0 ppg).
Bottom line: One of the most tumultuous seasons in Cal history also produces peaks moments. Campanelli is ousted in a controversial mid-season firing, and Bozeman helps turn the ship. Freshman Kidd’s national profile skyrockets after spectacular NCAA tournament performances in victories over LSU and two-time defending champion Duke
.
Tedford says all positions are open for bowl game:
Just got off a conference call with Jeff Tedford along with the Miami media, and Tedford said there will once again be a competition for the starting quarterback job for the Emerald Bowl. Tedford has gone into the past few games with Kevin Riley already tabbed as the starter, but today he said "We’ll evaluate the situation as we go over the next week and a half and see how it plays out." He also said it’s possible that once again both Riley and Nate Longshore will play.

Taylor Mays is seriously thinking about going pro. I would like it if he goes. I do not want to worry about him reading Riley’s throws.
They are going to take a lot of hits this off-season. If Sanchez leaves, they could actually have some problems. I’m not saying they will be middle of the pack, but they could lose 2-3 games (Remember they go to Autzen and Berkeley next year).

I’m not really sure Sanchez will get drafted all that high if he leaves early.

Why would he go earlier than John David Booty did? Actually, in all honesty, Booty was probably a better QB than Sanchez and Booty had two years of starting experience entering the NFL.
Also, USC players have a habit of not entering the draft early, even when they have the chance.
I have no new information on that at this time.
What makes you say that? I see a lot more athleticism and arm strength in Sanchez, and he’s a vocal leader for the team…
All this said, I think he’ll return because he has decision-making issues to work on, and we all know QBs are encouraged to get as much experience before entering the NFL.

More athleticism in Sanchez – sure, but decision-making? I definitely saw better out of Booty (senior year) than I did out of Sanchez this year.

Mentioned below, but he was injured and played horribly as a result of that injury.
Note, though, I’m not trying to really make the argument that Booty > Sanchez, just that Sanchez isn’t that much better than Booty as to justify his being a first day pick in the draft.
I have no new information on that at this time.
Let’s just say he wasn’t lighting the world on fire last season. He had a bad game against UW the week before. He did not play well against UCLA. Oregon State and Cal were ‘whatever’ games. He had two good performances shredding ASU and Illinois.
And I know about the broken finger, but your argument was based on decision making, and he threw some horrible balls in the second half into coverage. He was better in 2006 with Smith and Jarrett. In 2007 he had to run bootlegs to get his touchdowns.
by BearsNecessity on Dec 18, 2008 10:07 AM PST up reply actions
I dunno, Booty ripped off that great ten-yard run against us in 2007 in the 4th quarter with the gain on the line.
Wait, no, our run defense just sucks.
I have no new information on that at this time.
Booty was also injured and should never have been out there for that game.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Can’t tell if you’re mocking me or what, but he threw four picks as a result of a broken finger that kept him out for the next three games.
Booty’s only truly horrible game was UCLA 2006, but I’m talking Booty senior year.
I have no new information on that at this time.
Booty has 7 games with a sub 80 quarterback rating, including 2 games worse than UCLA 2006 (UDub 2007 and Furd 2007).

And, Sanchez had a 159 rating this year, Booty’s best year was a 144. That’s a big discrepancy.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Yes, but bear in mind that Booty didn’t have a defense that would be the best in the AFC West to rely on.
I have no new information on that at this time.
Sanchez is so good, he makes his defensebetter!
Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.

Last I checked, QB rating had nothing to do with the quality of your defense. You can make some attenuated argument about field position, but that’s about it.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Playing ahead because your defense shuts down teams (except Oregon State) vs playing from behind makes a huge difference…
I have no new information on that at this time.
Sanchez threw 39 for 57 for 490 yards, 6 TDs and 1 INT when he was behind in 2008. When the game was tied, he was 46 for 64 for 6 TDs and 1 INT with a 184.74 passer rating.
He actually performed much worse when he was ahead.

I don’t understand the Booty argument you make at all. He was prototypical West Coast QB through and through. Didn’t make mistakes, just ran the offense and threw a hundred short crossing routes. He had a great 2006 season with Smith and Jarrett still around. In 2007 he just ran bootleg after bootleg. He’s a serviceable backup in the league.
Sanchez definitely has as much potential as Palmer does.
by BearsNecessity on Dec 18, 2008 9:53 AM PST up reply actions
I guess my opinions of Booty are shaped by a lot of the really good games I’ve seen of his (I can’t count Stanford 2007 against him – he was injured and shouldn’t have been playing) – Rose Bowl 2006, Rose Bowl 2007, etc. and saw more than just dump-offs or WCO-type plays out of him.
I’ve seen a lot more out of Sanchez this year, but haven’t been impressed. I never saw too much that made him better than Booty.
I have no new information on that at this time.
Rose Bowl ’06 was his best game. Again Smith and Jarrett were probably just as responsible for his success in that game as he was—they were prototypical college receivers.
Booty is a good college qb. Sanchez’s mechanics still have the potential to translate to the NFL. So his upside is greater.
by BearsNecessity on Dec 18, 2008 10:09 AM PST up reply actions
You may be right. I’ll rewatch some film and compare Sanchez’ mechanics to Booty’s.
I guess it just doesn’t make sense why Sancehz would be a first-day draft pick, but we’ll see.
I have no new information on that at this time.
He probably shouldn’t go this year. But some teams desperately need QBs which is why he’d go first round.
In the long-term though, he’s better suited staying in Troy.

Who are you Mel Kiper?
Sanchez’s mechanics are pretty solid. I’d say in terms of NFL mechanics he’s better than Leinart and right behind Palmer, and in terms of college QBs he’s one of the best options in Division 1 out there. He’s way better than Stafford (bust) or Bradford (super bust).
by BearsNecessity on Dec 18, 2008 9:28 AM PST up reply actions
Better than Leinart? I realise we’re talkig solely NFL mechanics and I understand Leinart hasn’t shown much in the NFL (yet), but coming out of college, I’d definitely say Leinart had better mechanics than Sanchez does now.
That said, he is probably better than Stafford or Bradford.
I have no new information on that at this time.
Leinart was playing on the most stacked college offense of the past 20 years. Look at that team again. Two running backs that filled almost every possible role an OC can dream about, two pro-talented wide receivers, and a strong O-line.
by BearsNecessity on Dec 18, 2008 9:42 AM PST up reply actions
Arm strength is the single most-overrated quality for a QB. If it were as important as scouts think it is, JaMarcus Russell and Kyle Boller would be the best QBs in the NFL.
I have no new information on that at this time.
I honestly beleive that Leinart will be a good NFL QB. He’s had some injury problems, along with some maturity issues, but he’ll bounce back and become what he was hyped to be.
I have no new information on that at this time.
This.

I just don’t know what will happen with Leinart. if there was ever a perfect situation for a quarterback, it is Arizona: Fitgerald, Boldin, Edge, and JJ.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Kurt Warner happened, Fortunately, with the way AZ is looking these days, he may get the job sooner than later (as in the playoffs bc of injury or next year)

Yes, he didn’t use to wear gloves. Sort of odd that he does now. I guess it gives him better grip but most QBs choose not to wear gloves b/c they say they lose the “feel” on the ball.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
It’s funny that his hands are actually bigger than the average man’s though, but now everyone thinks he has little girl hands.

Yeah, it’s Kurt Warner.
Who woulda thought the best from that QB class would have been Jay Cutler?
I have no new information on that at this time.
To be honest, I never thought Leinart or Young would be great NFL qbs. They just had the odds in their favor throughout the 2005 season that it was impossible for them to look bad.
And once I saw Cutler’s highlight reels I reallly liked him.
by BearsNecessity on Dec 18, 2008 10:35 AM PST up reply actions
I NEVER thought Young would be a good NFL quarterback. Those mechanics could be the worst I’ve ever seen.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
I thought he had a chance if they tried to change up the offense to suit his style (serious run option with okay short passing skills). Instead they tried to make him a pocket passer, with predictable results.
by BearsNecessity on Dec 18, 2008 10:42 AM PST up reply actions
I completely disagree
I do not think he will be a good NFL QB. I thought he would be a bust, and so far he is. Of course, he could come back and be great some day, but I just don’t think he has the arm for the NFL. He was great at USC, but I don’t think he’ll ever be anything in the NFL.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
We shall see. I think he was great in college in a pro-style system and, really, when he grows up, he will be a top NFL QB. He’s shown some strong flashes of promise. Now let us wait and see.
I have no new information on that at this time.
He really hasn’t shown much flash at all. How long should everyone wait for the guy?
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
Another year or two?
Although I wouldn’t complain if they unloaded him on the Niners.

Um, Shaun Hill is five times the QB McNabb will ever be.

Again, he was on a loaded USC team with a great playcaller at OC the first two seasons and he was shredding terrible defenses with Reggie Monster Bush the last season. This shouldn’t be difficult to figure out.
by BearsNecessity on Dec 18, 2008 10:40 AM PST up reply actions
Wait, I thought I posted a comment...
Just because he was on loaded teams doesn’t take away from just how good a QB he was in college.
I have no new information on that at this time.
It’s not like he has a complete noodle…. Dude has to have a bigger arm than Pennington, and he has a good career. Leinart has that type of accuracy, and he’s not a Rhodes Scholar or whatever Pennington was… but he definitely isn’t stupid, just a little Brody Jenner-esque

by Thoroughbred on Dec 18, 2008 10:44 AM PST up reply actions
Plus the Pac-10 was top-heavy in 2004-2005. After he beat Cal in ’04 (where he did not play well at all), he did not face a top tier defense until he played the Longhorns. He was shredding shitty defenses all throughout the 2005 season.
Sanchez has shown much greater promise as a junior than Leinart did as a junior, particularly in the arm strength department.
by BearsNecessity on Dec 18, 2008 9:47 AM PST up reply actions
Remember, Leinart played 2003, 2004, and 2005, which is an incredible three years of starting experience and lost two games (Cal 2003 and Texas 2005).
In 2004, he played Virginia Tech that held undefeated SEC-IS-BEST Auburn to 13 points in the bowl game. And he had consistent decision-making abilities, limited mistakes, etc.
And don’t forget his epic performance in 2005 against Notre Dame (they were actually good that year), where he audibled on 4th-and-long to Dwayne Jarrett. I’m not sure leadership, decision-making, and poise under pressure gets better than that.
Yes, he had great receivers and Reggie Bush and Lendale White, but he also didn’t have the defense that Sanchez has to rely upon.
I have no new information on that at this time.
Oh. I forgot to mention Norm Chow. Huge reason for his success in college.
