An Emerald Bowl CGB Tailgate?
TwistNHook got the wrong photo yet again via estb.msn.com
(Note: Original text from Ragnarok)
Sure, the Emerald Bowl may feel like a home game, and in many respects, it mostly is: a short drive from home, stadium filled with mostly our fans, Bay Area weather and traffic, etc. etc. But in one important aspect, this game is different -- I have no idea where I'm going to be tailgating.
I have a feeling I'm not the only one feeling this, and pregame tailgate rituals are going to be in upheaval all over. Now, I've heard a few people asking about a CGB tailgate, and I've thought "Hey, why not? That could be fun. We already waste lots of our employers time hanging around making witty comments and inane pop-culture references, why not on our own time before the game?" My wife (AndBears) and I would be totally willing to organize something if there was interest from you guys; alternately, if one of you guys already has something going and would be willing to invite CGB'ers, that would totally be cool.
This is just an interest thread; I'm just trying to determine if there would be sufficient interest to bother with this, and what type of event would be most appealing. Several thoughts occur to me:
- We could simply arrange a meet-up at a local bar before the game. Two that come immediately to mind are Momo's and 21st Amendment. This would be the easiest to put together, and would require the lowest level of commitment possible (show up or don't, not a big deal), but certainly wouldn't be as private, nor probably as cheap (everything at bars is expensive!).
- We could get a car or two together and tailgate in one of the local parking lots. Depending on the level of interest, we could run it either as a pot-luck style or someone could buy a bunch of stuff beforehand and everyone who shows up would pay $5 to the kitty, or whatever. Demands a decent level of planning, but can be pretty informal, and we'd all have a place to shotgun beers together.
- Of course, if the tailgate idea is really popular, we could even go ahead and bring out folding tables (does anyone have one we could borrow?), and we may have a lead on a tent or two, which are nice even if it's not raining. My wife is very good at this sort of thing. Obviously we're not going to start up a major operation for 5 of us sitting around a grill, but if there's interest, we can certainly make something bigger than just drinking beers out of the trunk of some guy's car.
- We could all meet up at the CAA tailgate, which I've found to be quite a lot of fun in the past. More expensive than running your own tailgate, but catered food, all you can drink, band, Oski, dance team, and Sandy Barbour is totally worth $40 ($30 if you're a student/young alum [graduated in the last 10 years], and families get a discount too). Lacking other plans, this is probably what I'll do.
Anyway, if you're going to the game, vote in the poll and feel free to share any other ideas you have in the comments below. Depending on the response we get, I'll try and organize/announce something within the next few days.

If I were going to be in the country........
I would totally come up from LA for both the game and all the pre-game festivities like tailgating. But alas, I will be 5,000 miles away and only with you in spirit.
I left my heart at the Durant Food Court
oh, great
not only will you not be at the tailgate, now our tailgate is haunted! not an auspicious beginning.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

I vote for tailgating in the parking lot or the CAA tailgate.
I like the idea of tailgating in the parking lot, though the cost of a couple cars, food, and drinks may start to approach the cost of the CAA tailgate. The more people we have, the lower the cost, though.
It's seriously too bad that there's no building or complex around that might have a large supply of sports drinks.
I soooo want a CGB tailgate!
Mainly because this will be the first ever football game I go to by myself. None of my friends will be there because there are all in SoCal.
A parking lot tailgate would be the best because I’m under 21 and can’t go to a bar :(. I’ll happily pitch in $15-$20 or more if you want also!
In other words, Go Bears!
the carp’s will be out of town, unfortunately…we’re headed to Tampa, FL to visit family. We may even head to the fucking Gator Bowl if they drive us crazy.

jesus…from the Outback website:
The University of Iowa and the University of South Carolina accepted invitations today to meet in the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day in Tampa, Florida. The No. 26 Hawkeyes will face the Gamecocks for the first time in history.

This might help make people decide, but I’ll be on the East Coast and won’t be there. So, hopefully that will spur more people into attending the BBQ.

How does this relate to the A-11 offense?
And why are you going to the East Coast instead of a bowl game, you teetotaler?
I have no new information on that at this time.

I plan to revolutionize my annual in laws pick up Christmas Day football game. Team Shirts will totes dominate now!

Your logic is so impeccable. Clearly, Team Shirts would be wearing no Shirts. Just the same way that when I say Shaft is a bad man, he’s actually quite good.

Well, I assumed if there is a “Team Shirts”, there must be a “Team Shirtless”.
I have no new information on that at this time.
When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me. And I really don’t need any more help in that.
No, there’s Team Shirts and Team Shirts Also. Both teams wear shirts. It gets so cold in the wintertime. It would be wildly stupid to play without a shirt on. Sometimes I even wear a sweatshirt on top of my regular shirt. Of course, I have to signify that even though I am wearing a sweatshirt, I’m not on Team Sweatshirt.
All these clothing regulations can get confusing!

Either way.....
you should make up CGB business cards/flyers and pass them out to people at the CAA tailgate……unless of course you don’t want them to know about us. but then again, you’re all great at tooting your own horn, especially Twisty….he toots his horn at least 3 times a day
I left my heart at the Durant Food Court
don’t want them to know about “this site”, i meant……jeez…..thinking about Cal football like its my mistress.

Let’s do a “tailgate” with the CGB people. Nothing fancy, just tons of Bud Light (drinkability!) and all of us there, along with obnoxious music.

My lady and I will be BARTing in
and were considering possibilities (CAA tailgate, no tailgate, bar hopping) and would quite possibly be interested and willing to contribute in some fashion.
I’m down. I might swing by an unofficial tailgate – perhaps even by a full on CGB tailgate. I think a few people wanted to meet me, and I just might show my face.

Just in case anyone was worried about the possibility of me being at the tailgate.
It’s just that excessive sarcasm online = douchebaggery.

We also cannot address each other by first name or Tsiwt will delete our posts.

You’re not a teetotaler, are you?
We should have a list of people who don’t drink so there’s no awkwardness.
Also, someone convince Al Danzig to come.
I have no new information on that at this time.
I’m far from a teetotaler. But unfortunately I’ll be in Boston and not at the Bowl game. We should have a CGB basketball game in spring.
No, I’m not The Maharg but thanks for thinking of me so highly.
We’ll all tuck our jerseys into our shorts, naturally.

I have no friends who are coming to the game so I’ll be looking to leech somewhere. CGB it is!
where will the tailgate be held though? I’ve never been to the AT&T park not being a big baseball fan…
In other words, Go Bears!
Parking lot A?
I dunno, rags is organising this, I’m guessing. I hope.
I have no new information on that at this time.
I'm in, along with 2-3 others
I’m opposed to the CAA tailgate – all you can eat/drink is nice, but it’s still pricey at $40 (or even $30 with the young alumni discount). But I’d be all for a CGB tailgate of any magnitude. BON tailgates now draw visits from the Texas cheerleaders (replete with assless chaps) – CGB isn’t there yet, but you gotta start small before reaching that level. Let the Emerald Bowl be the start of a grand tradition of CGB tailgating.
Who's your Draddy?
I like the sound of it. Now where is Rags?
Maybe potluck style would work. Bring something: a six-pack, chips, a bottle, etc. and toss it into a pile.
Also, why the hell am I working on a Saturday night?!?!?!
I have no new information on that at this time.
i am trying to organize something. been talking it over with the wife, a few other people, etc. i will definitely have more options/info up either late today or tomorrow
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Excellent. So long as we have Rags as the anchor—locking down an actual location—potluck should work for the rest. Then we just need to make sure there’s not too much overlap (e.g., all dip and no chips) and we’ll be fine.
Who's your Draddy?
I figure once Rags has some sort of a plan in motion, people should start posting what they bring. Makes it easier to plan.
I plan on bringing beer, btw.
I have no new information on that at this time.
some sort of plan
two, actually. vote in the poll, help me decide.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
I love that it is 3 for plan 1, 3 for plan 2, and 6 for whatever.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
geez, i know

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Im already disappointed.

don’t you go ‘jewish mothering’ me, now. i’m catholic, i don’t need any extra guilt.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Potluck suggestions...
I’ll be driving up from San Jose into Berkeley and then taking a BART into SF on Saturday morning. What time do you suggest I be there?
Also any suggestions for what to bring if we are doing potluck? Alcoholic contents are out as I’m not 21. Also unless you want to die you don’t want me to cook. I can buy some pizzas or something if people wish. The last thing I want to be is a free loader
In other words, Go Bears!
I dunno, depends when the tailgate would start. If the game is at 5 pm, I’d imagine the simple tailgate would happen, say, 3 PM? Ample time for drinking, snacking, etc.
If that’s the case, I recommend pizzas or lots of chips + salsas.
Still waiting on rags, though.
I have no new information on that at this time.
Dude if the game starts at 5, tailgate starts at 1
Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.
www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com
At least. Rishi, if the game starts at 5 and we start tailgating at 3, that leaves maybe 1.5 hours for debauchery. That’s not nearly enough time.
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
That’s why I said “simple tailgate”, which is really just drinking, mingling, and snacking, not full-fledged BBQ’ing, etc.
That said, the last time I planned a tailgate, six of us stood in Tang Centre’s parking lot next to cars that weren’t ours and shotgunned a 12 pack, so don’t listen to my plans.
I have no new information on that at this time.
Those sound like good plans to me.
No, I’m not The Maharg but thanks for thinking of me so highly.

especially the origin of the word 'gerrymandering'
Portmanteau words may be produced by joining together proper nouns with common nouns, such as “gerrymandering”, which refers to the scheme of Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry for politically contrived redistricting: one of the districts created had the semblance of a salamander in outline.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

What they do at USC, in the NFL, and presumably, in the South.
Full on BBQs and grills with burgers, hot dogs, etc.
Plasma tvs with dishes.
Tons of beer, hard alcohol, wine.
