DBD 12.15.08 Who here has finished their XMas shopping?

I have finished mine.  I'm knitting a tie for my brother in law, my wife bought something for my mother-in-law that I'll attach my name to, I told my wife to buy something on my credit card for her, and the rest of my family is Jews.  Easy as pie!

If you are getting stressed out about XMas shopping, you should take my lead and be related to more Jews.  It takes all the stress out of any holiday shopping.  Except for Purim.  That just makes Purim more confusing.  So very confusing.

Speaking of confusing things, a Cal team crushed our hearts.  That's so unusual and confusing.

Yes, those damnable Nittany Lions defeated our Beloved Golden Bears in v-ball in the Elite 8.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The No. 8-ranked California volleyball team (26-7, 13-5 Pac-10) fell in a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-21, 25-17) to defending NCAA champion and top-seeded No. 1 Penn State (36-0, 20-0 Big Ten) today in the University Park Regional final of the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship at Rec Hall in State College, Pa. The Golden Bears finish the season with the best record in program history at 26-7 (.788) and advanced to the NCAA regional final for a school-record second consecutive year. Winners of an NCAA-record 109 consecutive sets, the Nittany Lions advance to the national semifinal match set to take place at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb. next week.

Senior outside hitter Am'ra Solomon earned University Park Region all-tournament team honors and led the Bears with eight kills on 16 attacks (2e) and posted a .375 attack percentage. Junior middle hitter Mindi Wiley also had eight kills (4e, 18att, .222) and added two blocks. Freshman outside hitter Tarah Murrey was next on the team with seven kills (4e, 16att, .188). The Bears were out-blocked 13.0-6.0 and attacked at a .116 rate (32k, 22e, 86att) in comparison to the .256 rate posted by the Lions (39k, 18e, 82att). Sophomore setter Carli Lloyd had 26 assists and claimed the sixth-place spot for single season assists at Cal, finishing the year with 1,392 (12.00 aps). The Bears complete the season with the best hitting percentage in school-history by posting a .287 attack rate (1,726k, 605e, 3909att).

And womens bball suffered a brutal loss, too, against Oklahoma

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Nyeshia Stevenson hit back-to-back 3-pointers and gave Oklahoma its first lead of the game with 3:43 to play, and the fifth-ranked Sooners made an improbable comeback from a 26-point halftime deficit to shock No. 9 California 86-75 on Saturday night in the Basketball By The Bay Classic.

Cal led by 17 points, 69-52, before Oklahoma (8-2) rallied by closing the game with a 34-6 run.

Stevenson finished with 21 points and Courtney Paris had 18 points and 13 rebounds to extend her consecutive streak of double-doubles dating to her freshman season to 102 in Oklahoma's third straight victory since a loss to top-ranked Connecticut on Nov. 30.

Ashley Walker scored in the paint and from the perimeter, finishing with 26 points and eight rebounds in the shocking collapse by Cal (8-2).

Alexis Gray-Lawson had 16 points and nine assists and Lauren Greif added a season-high 18 points for the Golden Bears, who dominated the first half of this highly anticipated showdown between the top-10 programs and all their ties but couldn't do enough right to hold off a late Oklahoma charge.

The Bears shot 64 percent and did everything right in the first half only to blow it over the final 20 minutes by shooting 28 percent and committing 11 of their 18 turnovers.

Cal started the game strong, hitting 8 of their first 12 field goal attempts. Junior guard Alexis Gray-Lawson hit her first four field goall attempts, putting up 13 points early in the game. The Bears led 30-10 with just under eight minutes remaining in the half. Ashley Walker scored her 22nd point of the game on a freethrow with 3:05 left in the first half. At the time, the entire Oklahoma team had 22 points total.Walker had a pair of three pointers in her 22 points, her third and fourth of the season and just the fifth and sixth of her career. Cal led 52-26 at halftime. Their largest lead in the game was 26, which they held with 4:59 left in the first half

Cal softball coach to enter HoF.

BERKELEY - California softball head coach Diane Ninemire was announced as one of three members to be inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's 2009 Hall of Fame class on Saturday. The announcement was made at the NFCA's annual convention being held at the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort in Marco Island, Florida.

Ninemire, who joined Frank Cheek of Humboldt State University and Bill Edwards of Hofstra University, will be inducted into the NFCA Hall of Fame on Friday, December 11 of next year, at the Renaissance Hotel in Nashville, Tenn. The 2009 class will bring the NFCA's Hall of Fame to 50 members.

Entering her 22nd year in the Cal dugout, Ninemire guided the Golden Bears to seven straight trips to the College World Series (1999-2005), winning the national championship in 2002. She has led Cal to 21 straight NCAA Regional appearances, and won her 900th career game last season versus Long Beach State. She has accumulated the second-most wins in Pac-10 history (932) and is the 11th softball coach in NCAA history with 900 or more wins.

During Ninemire's tenure at Cal, 34 All-America, 86 all-region, and 140 all-conference certificates have been issued to student-athletes. Two of Ninemire's former players - Michele Granger and Gillian Boxx - were four-time All-Americans and helped the United States win a Gold Medal as members of the 1996 Olympic Team in Atlanta. Former Bear Vicky Galindo, who Ninemire coached, was named to the 2008 15-member Olympic Team roster and earned a silver medal.

History was made in 2002 when Ninemire helped direct Cal to its first NCAA Championship at the WCWS with a 6-0 win over the Arizona Wildcats, the first women's title in Cal athletic program history. The 2002 team set a school record for wins (56), while Jocelyn Forest claimed the tournament's Most Outstanding Player honor, and Ninemire was chosen as the NFCA National Coach of the Year. Cal became the first Pac-10 team other than UCLA and Arizona to win the softball national title. Forest went undefeated in Cal's postseason run and completed the WCWS with a 4-0 record, 0.50 earned run average and 33 strikeouts in 28.0 innings.

Mens soccer player named 3rd team All-American.

BERKELEY - California sophomore forward Andrew Wiedeman earned a spot on the NSCAA/adidas All-America third team, the coaches' association announced today. Recently, Wiedeman was named to the NSCAA Far West All-Region first team.

"We are very proud of Andrew's accomplishments this year," said Cal head coach Kevin Grimes. "Having an All-American on the team is a great testament to the program and his teammates."

Last year, former Cal midfielder Andrew Jacobson and goalkeeper Stefan Frei were named to the NSCAA All-America first-team.

8th best B-Ball team:

In the 100th season of Cal basketball, we continue our countdown of the greatest teams in school history. Today: No. 8.

8. 1993-94.
   Team’s record: 22-8.
Achievements: Ties for second in Pac-10. NCAA tournament.
   Record vs. Stanford: 1-1.
   Record vs. UCLA: 2-0.
   Coach: Todd Bozeman.
Top players: G Jason Kidd (16.7 ppg, 9.1 apg), F Lamond Murray (24.3 ppg, 7.9 rpg), G Monty Buckley (12.8 ppg).
Bottom line: Likely overrated as the nation’s No. 6 team in preseason polls, the Bears have a shot at securing a Pac-10 co-title on the final day of the season, but blow a huge lead and lose at Washington State. Kidd is named first-team All-America and Murray is picked to the second team. But the Kidd-Murray era ends abruptly in the NCAA first round after a 61-57 loss to a less-talented, but far better-prepared Wisconsin-Green Bay team coached by Dick Bennett.

7th best Cal bball team:

In the 100th season of Cal basketball, we continue our countdown of the greatest teams in school history. Today: No. 7.

7. 1996-97.
   Team’s record: 23-9.
Achievements: Ties for second in Pac-10. NCAA tournament Sweet 16.
   Record vs. Stanford: 1-1.
   Record vs. UCLA: 1-1.
   Coach: Ben Braun.
Top players: G Ed Gray (24.8 ppg), G Randy Duck (12.3 ppg), F Tony Gonzalez (6.8 ppg).
Bottom line: In his first season as coach, Braun takes Todd Bozeman’s players and likely achieves more than his predecessor would have. Even after Pac-10 Player of the Year Ed Gray is lost to a broken foot in the regular-season finale (while scoring a school-record 48 points against Washington State), the Bears beat Princeton and Villanova to reach the NCAA’s second weekend, where they lose to powerhouse North Carolina 63-57.

ITS OFFICIAL:

Cal offensive line coach Jim Michalczik is leaving Berkeley to become the new offensive coordinator at Washington.

Michalczik agreed to make the move over the weekend but will continue with the Bears' staff through the Emerald Bowl on Dec. 27.

"It was an incredibly tough decision," Michalczik said Sunday night. "Leaving the Bay Area, leaving these kids, leaving coach (Jeff) Tedford, who gave me an opportunity here. This is a pretty good opportunity. It was literally too good to turn down."

Michalczik has coached alongside Tedford since the two were assistants at Oregon in 1999. He has also been an assistant head coach during his seven years at Cal and was the team's offensive coordinator in 2007.

Michalczik will join the staff of new Washington coach Steve Sarkisian, who replaced Tyrone Willingham last week.

"I'm excited in one aspect but a little sad on the other," Michalczik said. "I'm leaving a great situation, being on Jeff's staff. And these players have been something special."

The move makes sense for Michalczik, who has aspirations to be a head coach someday. Being a coordinator essentially makes him one step away from running a show himself. Michalczik also hails from Port Angeles, Wash., a couple hours northwest of Seattle. He is a graduate of rival Washington State.

Article on Mack Draddy:

BERKELEY — Cal center Alex Mack may not just be the best football scholar-athlete in the country. He may be the best football scholar-athlete of a generation.

That may sound a tad grandiose, but the 2008 Draddy Award winner given to the nation's top football scholar-athlete beat out a group of finalists that National Football Foundation president Steven Hatchell called "without a doubt their best class ever." The Draddy Award began in 1990.

"If this is on balance the best class ever, then to have him stand out, that's pretty special," Hatchell said. "He just stood out."

Mack won the Draddy Award at the National Football Foundation's annual awards dinner in New York on Tuesday night. He was chosen over 14 other finalists from all divisions of college football.

Mack was awarded a $25,000 post-graduate scholarship, and the other finalists received $18,000 scholarships. There were 164 nominees.

This actually makes sense if you step back from it. He’s probably reached his ceiling at Cal since Tedford hired Cignetti to be the OC, and it really seems like JT isn’t going anywhere. So, if he wants to continue to rise in the coaching ranks, he’d probably have to go elsewhere. This is very unfortunate now because he’s been so integral to the program’s rise since our OLine has been so solid. Just very unfortunate, but I’m sure Tedford will go after the cream of the crop. Because I trust JT will hire someone who fits what we have, I think this will probably impact recruiting more than performance for next year. Coach M doesn’t have quite the recruiting rep to match his rep for developing the linemen. Nonetheless, everyone agrees he’s done great things for Cal.

Anyway… Good luck, Coach M. I hope you do well (except against Cal)

that guy was a fantastic O-line coach…we must remember that assistants periodically leaving is a good thing in the long run. They just have to be ready to replace them. Coach M for Husky OC sounds like a bit of a reach though. A) Washington sucks. It’s not like they’re up and coming…even with JAKE LOCKER FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO SOMETHING. This isn’t a “springboard” gig unless they really turn it around. B) and this relates to A), Coach M’s a great coach…but I question Sark hiring him. I have a hard time believing Coach M was the best guy available. Of course, he may have hired him to deplete one of Cal’s strengths. No line, even with JahvidfuckingBest et al can’t run nor pass the ball.

I hope the next guy can recruit and coach well.

Noooo not coach M....

Maybe we’ll see a grad student instructor fill his shoes like Lupoi?

Also, continuing my saga of running into Cal football players in bizarre and ridiculous places, I was eating dinner with my family tonight at Trattoria Siciliana and who do we sit down next to but Pain Train himself, and WW along with what looked like Pain Train’s mom and some girl. I was kind of rooting for the waiter to screw up and spill something all over Mom Train so I could see the waiter get sacked to the ground, but it didn’t happen.

I thought it was kinda funny Worrell Williams was there, though. Like…do they do everything together?

I haven't even started Christmas shopping yet

Devin Bishop may emerge as a vocal leader on the defense.

Bishop, a 6-foot-1, 238-pound transfer from CCSF, was voted the team’s most inspirational player for his words in celebration, his words of encouragement and his words of leadership.
“I think it’s my responsibility. I think I’m going to have to come out and try to lead this team,” he said. "I’ve got to work hard and find ways to inspire the other guys.

“It’s definitely important, because there are times when the morale gets down. You can try to make guys follow your example, but sometimes it takes saying the right thing at the right time.”

That’s advice from Bishop’s older brother, Desmond, a guy who preferred being quiet but became a vocal powerhouse at Cal (2005-06) before being drafted by the Green Bay Packers. Desmond Bishop used to pace around his teammates on Thursdays, yelling all of the right motivations before big games.

"After review, it has been determined that the previous play was not reviewable"

Oh I miss Desmond:

Before Cal played No. 11 Oregon in 2006, the older Bishop bellowed, “There will be some times Saturday when it will feel like we’re walking through some dark alleys. I’m the guy you want walking with you.” Cal won 45-24 and sent the conference leader in scoring and total yards back to Eugene with greatly diminished numbers.

the aggravating

Thing about that #8 best Cal basketball team was that when we went up against UWGB, Ryan Jamison (our starting center who may have had the worst hands in the history of Cal, and was also a really nice guy and had the funniest appearance on Bear Territory ever) was DOMINATING the Phoenix inside. I think he had 8 points early on on 4-5 shooting and was rebounding everything. It would’ve been the best game of his career – if Bozeman hadn’t inexplicably sat him down and then went to the Jason Kidd shoot everything from the outside offense.

Triple Le Sigh.

I can’t believe there is actual talk about Tim Tebow going pro early.

The guy, as a QB, is probably a 3rd round pick at the highest. He’s clearly a project. He is not a polished passer. He has a slow delivery/throwing motion. He hasn’t lived in a pro-style offense. I just don’t see him making a significant impact for at least 3 years after 3 years of significant playing time. Project! Project! Project!

The guy has to come back for his senior season.

“Hello, I’m Jahvid Best, running back for the Cal Golden Bears. My opponent, Jaquizz Rodgers, claims he is the best running back in the Pac-10. What The Quizz fails to tell you is that I gain 3.2 yards more per carry than he did this past season. I also led the conference in rushing in 2008, setting a school record with 311 yards against the University of Washington. by BeastMode on Dec 15, 2008 10:00 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

In all seriousness, Heisman moments are those really, really memorable moments – not just the ones for big yards.

Remember that play against Stanford where it looked like he was going to be stuffed for a loss, but then turned around and gained 60 yards? If he did that in a nationally-televised game, that would be his Heisman moment. Bonus points if he hurdled a defender.

Think of what Sam Bradford’s “Heisman moment” was – it was the twisting jump almost into the end zone against Oklahoma State. He didn’t even score a TD on it, but it supposedly measured his “grit” or something.

I understand what a Heisman moment is. This year’s best “Heisman moment” was Crabtree’s game winning catch against Texas. My point is, I think Jahvid is a lot more capable of providing a single moment than Jacquizz, a back that gets yards in small chunks.

It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

As far as workhorse backs not getting it, that’s probably right though I haven’t looked into it. Hey, if OSU went 11-1 and Quizz put up better numbers than this year, who knows?

It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

If Jahvid wins the Heisman, we’ll be going to the Rose Bowl.

This list loses credibility with Davis @ #6, Quizz @ #9 (no big plays), Blount @ #12, Potts @ #18 and, to a lesser extent Sanchez @ #5. I’m not sure how one could predict (with no OC as of right now) that Sanchez would be Heisman-worthy.

The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.

by carp on Dec 15, 2008 8:00 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The theory with Sanchez is that some may view them as a legit title contender and Sanchez is a good enough quarterback to put up decent numbers in any system. I agree, Davis makes no sense and Blount is a joke. I won’t rehash the Quizz debate here, but you just shouldn’t win the Heisman with 4.8 YPC.

It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

by BeastMode on Dec 15, 2008 8:09 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Of course, this also requires Jahvid having a good day against SC, though perhaps it is more likely sense the game is at home and there will almost certainly be more consistency out of the passing game . . . right?

I really think the only way Jahvid wins the Heisman is if Cal goes to the Rose Bowl. That would probably mean a victory over $C. These two things should eliminate Sanchez. I’m not talking about backing into the Rose Bowl either. It has to be an $C style dundundudndudnudndundudndudnud-type conference ass whopping. If Cal backs into the Rose Bowl and Jahvid plays well, I think Teblow or McCoy or some other random dude east of the rockies will win it.

The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.

by carp on Dec 15, 2008 8:16 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed. No 9-3 Rose Bowl team like OSU would’ve been this year. 10-11 wins plus a good game against SC and the expected phenomenal runs. It won’t be easy.

JUCO DE commits this weekend

From Rivals

“The team at Cal has a winning spirit and the dedication of the players and the academic programs are just great. I am majoring in history and their history program is second in the nation. They have a great team and great players and I can’t wait to be part of it.
Everything was just right so I committed.”

Ryan Davis will take some other officials but will most likely sign with us…

A surprise weekend visitor to Berkeley, Davis is an impressive 6-foot-4, 257-pound defensive end who originally prepped at Artesia high school in Los Angeles. He’s been timed at 4.77 seconds in the 40-yard dash, and also owns a 35-inch vertical leap.

Nice to bring in a guy to play along with the young DE talent we have rising in the program. He’ll probably provide insurance if we don’t land our big prep DE target this year. U$C is recruiting him hard too, so it’s always nice to steal their guys.. the greedy bastards.

I just finished the Coach O book. I think I’ll try the Michael Lewis book next after I finish “Holding Fast, The Untold True Story of the Mt. Hood Tragedy.” It’s a book penned by a late mountain climbers wife. The climber, an experienced one, died on Mt. Hood while waiting for the rescue team to find him in his snow cave. Seems like an emotional book although you can tell she’s an amatuer writer.

UCSF drops bomb on pharma
After winning approval, the companies typically sponsor reports of those tests in medical journal publications, which many doctors often rely on to determine whether to prescribe new drugs for their patients.

Now a skeptical team of medical investigators at UCSF has accused the major drug companies of bias by distorting the results of their trials in those publications, making it hard for doctors to judge for themselves the pros and cons of prescribing the new drugs.

As a result, the researchers say, patients may sometimes be taking medicines they don’t need – or with unwanted side effects – that their doctors have prescribed on the basis of inadequate information.

Not that surprising, but to actually prove it (rather than speculate) is a whole nother ballgame.

I, too, have received word from several ATO people that since I have a confirmation number I would be getting tickets. They won’t tell me where they are or when I might know where they are, though. Mack on Draddy Award
"You hear friends are going to Cabo for spring break. I don’t get to do those things. ‘Let’s go to Tahoe this weekend and snowboard.’ ‘I have a game, can’t do that.’ My friends go to concerts all the time. There are a lot of fun things that happen that I really don’t get to be a part of. It’s either football or school that really limits me. I’d love to go out and do something, but I have to go to the library. It really restrains what you can do."

Mack’s saying what a lot of collegiate athletes feel like at any level. I’d add you can do 2 of academics, athletics, socializing…but it’s tough to do all 3. Hell, it’s even tough to do one depending on the major (like science, engineering, "premed"). I played baseball collegiately for two years. It was awesome. But school became a “try and get by” kind of thing. I took classes towards my major, but I rarely had time to appreciate them and excel. Guys around me all thought they had a chance of playing pro ball. After spending ~50 h/wk doing baseball related activities and riding pine, I called it quits entering my junior year. With the extra time I was able to find a career I enjoyed doing and discovered things (like research) that I would have never had time for.

I share this because I’m so impressed by Mack. He is an absolute stud for excelling in the classroom and on the field. Sounds like he even has somewhat of a social life. Congrats!

Talk to Chuck: Barkley opens mouth, plays race card
Auburn alum Charles Barkley just blasted his school on espn.com (link below) for hiring Gene Chizik as football coach over Turner Gill.

Chizik is white, and a proven loser. Gill is black, and a proven winner.

"I think race was the No. 1 factor," Barkley said. "You can say it’s not about race, but you can’t compare the two resumes and say (Chizik) deserved the job. Out of all the coaches they interviewed, Chizik probably had the worst resume."

I don’t want to get into whether race is a part of Auburn’s decision. However, if it was really down to Turner Gill and Gene Chizik, I fail to see any plausible explanation for passing up on Gill.

It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

I think Auburn needs to explain Chizik over Gill AND Tuberville. What the hell are they thinking?

Race is a tricky issue. In my world, racism (or discrimination) isn’t an issue as I treat and believe everyone should be treated equally. But I get tired of people shooting off when they don’t know the whole story (like Barkley). I have a great friend who’s latina. She’s the first person from her family to graduate from college. Her parents don’t speak English and live in San Bernardino. She was over at our house and we were playing with my dog (a chocolate lab). I said…“Man, he’s perfectly brown” as he has the same color fur, toe nails, eyes, eyelashes, and nose. She shot me a look and said “What’s that supposed to mean?” like I was being racist. I was shocked. I couldn’t believe how sensitive she was. I would never try to offend her or anyone else. Of course, I’ve never walked around in her shoes so I don’t know where she’s coming from. Sometimes I wish we could just hit the playstation reset button and start over.

Ty might be a good coach to hire for three years to clean up a program that’s so mired in scandals.

Then you fire him and hire a good coach.

I think Ty is a pretty good coach for an elite academic institution, like say Stanfurd. Ty might be a good fit for one of the ivies. There are a lot of things coaches are evaluated on, it can’t just be about wins and losses. Though, outside of his UW stint, he has been pretty successful in that department.

i got an email back in july saying that i was entitled to a settlement check from the regents for being overcharged on student fees in the spring and summer of 2003. basically, UC raised the student fees on students after they had already enrolled, which sounds fairly “not legal” to me, although i didn’t notice at the time, and was going to pay pretty much whatever they charged in any case.

it told me to verify that the address they had on file was my current address, and gave me an address where i could contact the lawyers involved, but that otherwise, i didn’t have to do anything. i haven’t heard from them since, but perhaps i have a settlement check waiting at home for me, too.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

UC promised not to raise fees and did it anyway, I guess they forgot that they have law and business schools and those kids got pissed and sued. They were charged way more than us lousy undergrads and hence more pissed.

I got a check for 450 as I did a full slate of summer school, it will be going back to the regents via my folks who rightly own the money and are paying for my brother.

My check, however, was only for like $30. I guess my tuition increase wasn’t that bad, or the class action lawyers took 90% of it, or both.

Another Cal professor in the Obama administration

President-elect Barack Obama has selected the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to be his energy secretary….

He is also a professor of physics and molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley and former head of the physics department at stanfurd University.

In 1997, Chu shared the Nobel Prize in physics for research into ways to cool and trap atoms using laser light.
