Emerald Bowl Site Visit
The bowl game site visit is one of my favorite things. There is a lot of inside scoop info... some of which I will share with you. :)
In no particular order...
- The Miami Marching Band is bringing their full band and performing both a pregame and halftime show.
- The Emerald Bowl halftime show will feature both bands only - there will be no (literally) breath-taking fireworks crapfest extravaganza. (Holiday Bowl anyone?)
- I know what uniform combination they are leaning towards, but I can't tell you what it is. I accept bribes.
- Cal's will call will be at the Lefty O'Doul entrance near the Juan Marichal statue.
- Cal's students will be in sections A & B of the sideline bleachers (500 seats), right behind the Cal Team Bench. The Miami students will similarly be in sections D & E of the sideline bleachers, right behind the Miami Team Bench.
- Cal has only sold about 400 student tickets (disappointing), so section 135 will no longer be student seats but general admission seats.
- At this point, the Oakland Alameda Ferry will NOT be running its AT&T Park service for the bowl game. Something about the weather and the docks being privately owned.
- Parking in all the regular Giants lots is $20 per car. Yes, even for Parking Lot A.
- In the second iteration of the manual, one of the gift's title was updated to "Armor Gear Rolling Sherpa Luggage Bag." They joked that just having "Armor Gear Rolling Sherpa" was misleading. :)
Below the fold, some fun pictures of the site and more information for fans.
Some fun pictures...
From the 3rd Street bridge, a view of Pier 48 where the Cal tailgate will be. You can't really tailgate much closer than this!
Standing where homeplate would be looking at the scoreboard.
It's fun to be on the field. :)
The Giants lockerroom. The back left corner is Barry Bonds' retired locker.
The view from a suite and where the coaches will be. It was sweet.
Lining the field for football!
The view from the huge patio outside the coaches' suite at the Marriott (team hotel). I was so enamored with the view that I forgot to take any pictures of the patio itself or inside the suite!! Colin Powell has stayed here. That's the Bay Bridge in the background. The view was truly most amazing.
You can see AT&T Park in the distance. The grassy area in the front is Yerba Buena Gardens, the site of the joint rally at 11am on Friday, Dec. 26.
That's all for now. Go Bears! Beat the 'Canes!

This is a great amount of information. Thank you very much for sharing.
I’m wondering, if bleachers A and B are student seating, then why was 135 converted from student seating to general admission? Were there originally two Cal student sections?
If I guess properly, will you tell us what the uniforms are? Since it’s a 5pm game and basically a home game, we’ll wear gold on blue. That’s right, right? They’re not going to go and unveil some strange uniforms (a la Oregon) with bear claws on them or anything, right?

“They’re not going to go and unveil some strange uniforms (a la Oregon) with bear claws on them or anything, right?”
I have no idea what you’re talking about. “Oregon” and “Strange Uniforms” does not compute to me.
It's spelled "S-H-U-C-F-A-D-O-D-N-C-S"
Please, ask me about CFADODNCS.
135 was originally student seating
so yes, the students would have been separated. The bleachers behind the team bench are better suited for rowdy students standing. The band is in the left field bleachers sections 136 and 137, and the Pac-10 wasn’t given much more room there in the bleachers for students. I would think students in 135 would have been weird, even if they were ALL there.
I will confirm – no strange new uniforms. There will definitely not be a feather claw on their shoulders. :)
Wow. So my seat in section C of the bleachers is looking like I’ll be sitting right between the two student sections. That aught to be interesting.
Seriously
Couldn’t argue with row 10 possibly on the 50 (you don’t happen to know which way the numbers go?). Well normally I’m in section q near the visitor section anyways. This will just be more compressed. They must have intentionally put a non-student buffer section in there to keep ’em seperated.
Wow. Thanks for doing this. The pictures and info are awesome.
I used to live only one block away from the Marriott hotel… those pictures of downtown SF are very familiar.
Perhaps I should go to the Yerba Buena Gardens rally. I have a pad I can crash at that’s only a mere 100 yards away!

Very disappointing that only 400 student tickets were sold.
On the bright side, I am liking this bowl a lot more as the days go on. Home game, great location, beautiful facilities, and a name opponent. Not bad.
I too, think it’s disappointing that only 400 student tickets were sold. On the bright side though, the alumni are making up for the students. Probably gonna be about 95% Cal fans at the game (38k out of the 40k).

Not too surprising, really
Pretty much everybody who goes home further south than Monterey (or out of state) isn’t going to make it back to the Bay so soon after X-mas, so you’re just counting on Bay Area students who may have found the end result of this year disappointing (although I disagree with that assessment).
Oh I understand why there are so few students, I guess. I dunno, just thought given that the game is in California and reasonably priced, that more students would show. How many went to the previous bowl games?
It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.
At the aTm dismantling, there were not many students at all….

Most of my friends (all Cal students like I) are either a) from SoCal or b) EECS majors who don't care about football
They’re not coming up to watch the game.
I am however because I’m from NorCal and I’’m an EECS major that loves football.
In other words, Go Bears!
this is probably why, despite being EECS myself, I have very few EECS friends.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
Same here
Most of my EECS friends are old HS friends or friends of friends
In other words, Go Bears!
I’m coming up from Southern California for the game. With gas prices so low (only about $25 to drive up!), it makes it even easier to return to the Bay Area for a couple days.

I know lots of students from the Bay Area who want to sit with their family/friends
So they couldn’t get student tickets, and instead bought regular tickets. For those students from the Bay Area, who grew up watching Cal football, it’s a big deal for the whole family…
There's no crying in baseball!
dude
i went to WSU, OSU, Dallas for NCAA first round loss to Iowa State, Arizona for both football and basketball, San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl and every single game my senior year.
They can make it up to the Yay Area for a bowl game.
And I was so looking forward to getting my very own Armor Gear Rolling Sherpa.

i forgot to mention...
that Miami’s uniforms will be white top, orange bottom. Now – this is what was reported in the meeting. There are still several weeks before the game, so I can guess that people can change their minds. There was joking regarding the USC / UCLA uniforms last week and how everyone should avoid that like the plague.
With Cal, the staff is definitely leaning towards one combination. The “issue” is that normally the seniors get to pick the uniform combination. For the bowl game, it may be less of “what the seniors want, the seniors get” and more of a “Jeff thinks this combination looks great, don’t you think so? Great!”
Can we do a weekly chat with you instead?

Why do you people always want to know what the uniform will be?
What does knowing this information prior to entering the stadium do for you?

you know you have a great post
when you get to the point of random pictures being posted. YEEEEESSS! ;)
Hey OskiWeeWee
Did you happen to notice how fans will access the student section bleacher seats? Is there a walkway or something? Basically, how easy would it be for me to get into the student section whilst not technically having a ticket to sit there.

Don’t you know anyone still at Cal? Have them purchase a student ticket for you.

Oh, neva mind.
Sneak into the student section anyway – when the hell do they ever check?

At tightly-controlled places like Pac Bell with easily delineated sections and high demand for limited tickets for a one-time event?

i can’t really ask my ticket guy how it easy to sneak from section to section. people in the business of tickets sort of frown on that…

Seat #'s for Pacbell Park
If you are sitting in a seat, looking at the field: Seat # 1 is on your RIGHT and they go LEFT in this ballpark. I asked my Giants ticket rep and she said this is true for the added on field bleachers as well.
If anyone is interested, I’ve got some extra seats in that CENTER, field bleacher section C and also some over next to the CAL band in Section 137…
