DBD 12.1.08 Do we hate UDub?
I know that they killed us last year, embarrassingly. And I know that the bane of my collegiate football existence (besides Holmoe himself) coaches there. But I find it difficult to irk any of my ire against the Huskies. And I do so love to irk my ire. I really love to irk anything. Really.
I think it's because a)I'm still really happy and content after Big Game and b)their team is in shambles. This is why it's best to leave the Big Game as the last game of the regular season. Its a perfect exclamation point. I just hope that the football team isn't like me!
And it's tough to hate on TDub when hes been fired and this is his last game. His career really took a downturn after he left Stanford. He gets fired from ND (inappropriately, imho) and now UDub (not so inappropriately, imho). Lord am I happy he left Stanford and failed to make UW any good. But still. It is what it is, I guess.
I know our Duck and Beaver brethren to the north really, really, really hate UW. And thats cool. But am I the only one struggling to irk anything, let alone my ire?
Mens Water Polo beats Long Beach State:
The No. 3 ranked Cal men's water polo team (19-9) closed out the season with a 13-9 defeat of No. 8 Long Beach State in the 7th place match of the MPSF Conference Tournament, Sunday, November 30th at the Raleigh Runnels Aquatic Center in Malibu. The Bears were lead by five players who each scored two goals against the 49ers.
The Bears jumped on the board early on a goal by senior captain Frank Reynolds to take a 1-0. On Long Beach State’s next possession, Justin Koeppen scored to tie the match at 1-1. Less than a minute later, freshman Ivan Rackov scored to give Cal a 2-1 lead. Neither team would score for the next three minutes. The end of the first period saw each team score twice and trade goals as Cal led 4-3 after the first period.
Midway through the second period, Cal extended its lead to 6-3 on Reynold’s and Rackov’s second goals of the match. After Rackov’s goal, Taylor Clute scored for 49ers to cut the lead to 6-4 with 2:07 remaining in the first half. With 0:55 seconds remaining in the half, Cal junior All-American Spencer Warden notched his second goal of the match to give the Bears a 7-4 lead at the half.
Womens BBall wins Paradise Jam Tourney:
St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. - The California Golden Bears won the Paradise Jam Reef Division tournament title with a 76-43 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes Saturday night at the University of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas. Senior forward Ashley Walker scored 32 points, tying her career high, en route to being named tournament MVP. Junior guards Lauren Greif and Alexis Gray-Lawson were also named to the All-Tournament team.
Iowa started the game strong, jumping out to a quick 8-2 lead. Cal senior forward Ashley Walker found her stroke, scoring 11 straight points for the Bears to give them a 13-8 lead. The Bears built on Walker's foundation, extending their run to 24-2 to take a 26-10 lead. Once again, it was the Bear defense fuelling the offense. Iowa shot just 26.7% in the first half with the two teams retiring to the locker rooms with Cal leading by 20, 40-20. Walker accounted for 20 of those first half Cal points.
The most important basket of the half came at the 1:26 mark when junior guard Alexis Gray-Lawson drove through the lane to lay in the ball, scoring two points for her team and becoming the twentieth member of Cal's 1,000 point club. The St. Thomas crowd gave Gray-Lawson a rousing ovation when the accomplishment was announced.

Cal finished the regular season with a 23-6 overall record and won a program-best 13 matches in Pac-10 play. The Bears also set school records by winning 29 consecutive sets from Sept. 14 through Oct. 19. Cal's 8-0 Pac-10 start and 18-1 overall start were also program records.
Another article on VBall:
Cal and Stanford both will host first- and second-round matches as the 64-team field for the 2008 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship was announced Sunday.
The seventh-ranked Bears (23-6) received their school-record seventh straight tournament bid and will play Siena (20-12) at Haas Pavilion on Friday at 8 p.m. New Mexico State (25-8) will face Saint Mary's College (20-7) at 6 p.m in the other first-round match. The winners will play Saturday at 8 p.m.
The at-large bid was the fourth in Gaels' history, as they made appearances in 2003, 2004, and 2005.
The Cardinal (26-3), seeded No. 2 overall, will begin its quest for its seventh NCAA title Friday at 7 p.m. at Maples Pavilion against Albany (23-8). Pepperdine (20-7) and Long Beach State (25-5) will meet in the other match at 4:30 p.m. The winners will meet Saturday at 7 p.m.
Stanford is one of just two teams to have made it to all 28 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championships and finished second to Penn State last year.
Also, Santa Clara (17-9) will play Kansas State (24-7) in Seattle on Friday, and USF (22-7) will face Duke (24-8) in Los Angeles.
Okanes on Bowl possibility:
Cal got back together Sunday night after the Thanksgiving break, knowing a lot more about their postseason status. After Oregon’s rout of Oregon State last night, it seems to be almost a sure thing that the Bears are headed to the Emerald Bowl at AT&T Park on Dec. 27.
Cal is going to finish alone in fourth place in the Pac-10 or tied for fourth place. Either way, the Bears will be in fourth place and be in the crosshairs of the Emerald Bowl. The Emerald Bowl wants Cal in a bad way, giving the game a local flavor for the first time and almost assuredly guaranteeing a sellout.
This season, the Emerald Bowl actually is slotted to take the conference’s fifth-place team with the Las Vegas Bowl scheduled to have the fourth place team. But the two bowls work in tandem for the 4-5 slot, switching off every year with the first pick. The Las Vegas Bowl actually has the first pick this year, but the Emerald Bowl is working with the Las Vegas Bowl to make sure it gets Cal and the Las Vegas Bowl is happy with its team.
As of right now, Arizona is the fifth-place team. The Las Vegas Bowl likely would rather have Arizona anyway. It’s closer than Cal, hasn’t been to a bowl game since 1998 and should travel well.
So, anyway, there you go. Vote in the poll. And dump away. Go Bears!

Emerald Bowl may not be that much of a foregone conclusion
So says Ted Miller at ESPN:
The Emerald Bowl really wants them for the local angle, but a matchup with a mid-level ACC team isn’t terribly attractive. And the Las Vegas Bowl probably shouldn’t be fired up about trading its No. 4 conference pick for No. 5 Arizona if the Wildcats lose to Arizona State. And, gosh, a Cal-TCU Vegas Bowl would be an outstanding matchup.
Yes, Ted. Yes it would be.
Also thats predicated on UA losing to ASU. Not seeing that happen. Tho crazzier things have happened.

I actually see it as a toss-up. An opportunistic ASU defense with a decent passing game versus a similar UA team in a rivalry game. As we saw with Oregon and OSU, anything can happen, even when you’re the favored team at home. Also, ASU is playing for a bowl game here.
I don't
I think Zona’s better in all facets of the game and has had extra preparation time. ASU will have a hard time getting a pass rush on Zona’s line. It’s not hard to play opportunistic defense against Kevin Craft and company. AZ 31 – ASU 17.
I could be wrong, but I doubt it. ;)

Yes! I most certainly hate the Huskies
While I agree that the Big Game should be the season finale, the Huskies are worthy of our ill will. I sat through far too many drubbings at their hands during the ’80s and ’90s to feel anything but contempt. Plus, Bill Gates. ’Nuff said.
Go Bears!
LIke Pete, I’ve seen plenty of epic beatdowns on Bears, by Huskies, 52-3 I think in 1982…yikes! But I can’t say I hate them, for one my best friend from grade school has an older brother who played for them in the ’70’s (Tom Scott, went on to play for the CFL). For another they are really sad this year. I’d rather beat them when they’re good.
I fear the team is looking past them though and to lose this game would send me and much of the fan base around the bend! Can they maintain focus after Big Game, Thanksgiving break and getting the bowl invitation?
I don't hate the Huskies
But I wasn’t paying attention to college football when they were wailing on Cal. My mom and her family HATE the Huskies for being “cheaters” and “paying their players.” In my mind, the most professional “college” football team distinction now belongs to USC.
I don’t hate the Huskies. We sucked so much when I was in school that it would be quite hard to hold a grudge against any team that whipped us regularly. It was always a fun roadtrip and their band was totes cool to us (Straw Hat Band) when we were up there. They brought us cookies during the game and invited us all to there party and we would do the same for them when they came down to Berkeley. Plus, Gold Bonding!
PS, hopefully those douches from Corvallis learned to not taunt the opponent before the game. Now that they cost us a Holiday Bowl bid, we owe tons and tons of revenge on them next year.
On a related note, I don’t want to bring bad Karma…
What’s the best way to express my hatred for Huskies and my love for Cal this week?
It's spelled "S-h-u-n-b-o-w-l"
Sardonic homecoming float is probably the best way to go.

Typically, we’re pretty good at exacting revenge (See Oregon State in 2004, UCLA in 2006, and Tennessee in 2007). However, we didn’t exactly step up against Oregon State this year.
This is likely a story we are familiar with. But, the LA Times ran an article today on the greatest running back in modern Cal history, Chuck Muncie.
“I think what comes through to anyone, especially young people, is that he has this really big and good heart,” Cal’s Coysh says. “He’s very accepting of people. He doesn’t take nonsense, but that caring comes through.”
If not for his drug abuse, Muncie might have wound up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but he notes without regret, “I had a pretty good career.”
His second act, however, has eclipsed his first.
“I’m a very selfish person,” Muncie says, offering a unique perspective, “and I like to feel good. One way I could make myself feel good was by helping other people. I learned, over a period of time, that was something that worked for me.”
I see the Chuck Muncie article
But I failed to see the article on Reynard “Buda” Rutherford. You said the greatest running back in modern Cal history.
Recruiting News: 4-star SLB commits
I think we need T-bred to confirm this. I pieced this together from two comments from readers of JO’s blog:
From Jan K Oski:
Onto bigger news, the Texas connection continues as SLB Jarred Price (5′10″,215lb,4.53) committed on this fine day. Thanks Coach Thompson! Somebody better give that man a healthy X-mas bonus!
From ToparchBear:
yes! he is a 4 stars in Rival.com. that put cal at ranked 41 nationally. All the coaches need to push harder to win more top recruit, if they want to be continually competative.
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
Well, based on star ratings and video, it looks as if Cal is putting together a more heralded class than last year. Right now, we only have 7-8 commits, so overall ranking is sort of silly since it allocates points to each recruit and we recruit later than most. Also, if you rank the schools according to average star, Cal is in the top 15 or so according to Scout and probably Rivals.
somehow I don't think this is him...

The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
I mentioned before my nearly complete neutrality for the huskies. Oh, I want to beat them badly, but I honestly have a very difficult time actually generating any honest emotion toward the school, the campus, or the students. Besides, huskies are just so fluffy and adorable and cuddly.
It’s odd, too. I mean, I have a very healthy animosity toward both SoCal schools. The Zona schools rub me the wrong way and I can get a pretty good dislike brewing before playing them. The Furd goes without saying. I actually kind of like the Oregon schools (I know, I feel like I’m almost cheating). But oddly, I have nothing but a complete “meh” attitude toward the Washingtons.
Of course, I’m not above kicking someone when they are down, so let’s hope we humiliate those purple bastards by tossing them aside like a used condom, giving Ty a nice fat O-fer as a going away present.

Some quotes from Randall Carroll
from Rivals
After weeks of delays, Carroll was also excited to officially visit Cal-Berkeley. However, the trip wasn’t what he expected, which bodes well for the Golden Bears.
“I expected that the school was all about academics, so it might be a boring trip,” said Carroll. "It turned out to be a real good experience. I liked the city of Berkley itself.
“The people are real nice, and it’s calm so you can focus on football and your education. Nobody bothers the football players – it’s like their city. If you want something fast paced, you can go into San Francisco and that’s only about 15 minutes away.”
“First of all, I wanted to watch the defense,” said Carroll. "They’re pretty solid. They could use some work here and there, but you can say that about almost any team. I wanted to see what the defense was like because that gives me a better idea of how the team is going to play in the future.
"Obviously I like what the offense is doing. Jahvid Best gets about eight to ten plays that are meant for him. It’s not a play where he gets open, or he’s an option. They have plays that are designed specifically for him.
“That’s what they want to do with me. They want me at receiver, but they’ll use me on screens, reverses, motion me out of the backfield . . . that kind of thing.”
“It was my first visit, but I would rate it out as a 10,” said Carroll. "Cal really balanced it out well. They took me to the party side of things and showed me it could be like my home, L.A.. But then they mixed it in with education.
“The players talked about education, even when we were just hanging out. It wasn’t corny or anything. They were comfortable talking about that stuff with me.”

Emerald, according to the Chron, looks like a lock. The thing I found interesting is Simmons thinks USC would drop out of at-large contention if they lose to UCLA, which is probably right.
I don’t think so – if USC loses and all else plays out, the bowls could look something like this:
BCS NCG: Oklahoma vs Florida
Sugar: Alabama vs Texas
Orange: BC vs Cincy
Fiesta: Utah vs ??
Rose: Oregon State vs Penn State
Now, for the Fiesta, there are three main contenders:
USC, OSU, and Boise State. One would be hard-pressed to give the spot to a two-loss OSU team that lost to a two-loss USC team.
That’s if it happens. Of course, if USC wins, there’s still one at-large open between Boise State and a lower-ranked Ohio State. Of course, Boise State is more deserving, but at the same time, Utah takes the automatic bid, so the bowl will choose the team that will get better ratings – Ohio State.
I guess. Though, based on Boise’s incredible win a couple years ago, i would think ratings for them would be decent. And, I would think tOSU’s would not be that good based on the last couple years in the MNC.
The three lowest-rated BCS games:
2007 Fiesta Bowl (Boise vs Oklahoma)
2007 Orange Bowl (Wake Forst vs Louisville)
2005 Fiesta Bowl (Utah vs Pitt)
I’m guessing that the 2008 Sugar Bowl (Hawaii vs Georgia) is on that list too.
Well, to be fair, No one knew Boise could be competitive in 2007. Also, is Utah really to blame for the poor ratings in 2005 or do you think 8-4 Pitt had a hand in that as well?
Sure, but even if a BCS game pitted Ohio State against Texas (and anyone knows Texas would destroy OSU), it would still garner higher ratings.
Bottom line – non-BCS teams don’t attract large audiences.
No, you’re right. Just would like to see Boise get a shot. But looking at the available slot(s), it looks extremely unlikely.
I don’t think you can have three teams from one conference in the BCS picture.

by Thoroughbred on Dec 1, 2008 10:38 AM PST up reply actions
You are correct, for the most part:
At-Large Eligibility
If there are fewer than 10 automatic qualifiers, then the bowls will select at-large participants to fill the remaining berths. An at-large team is any Football Bowl Subdivision team that is bowl-eligible and meets the following requirements:
A. Has won at least nine regular-season games, and
B. Is among the top 14 teams in the final BCS Standings.
No more than two teams from a conference may be selected, regardless of whether they are automatic qualifiers or at-large selections, unless two non-champions from the same conference are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS Standings.
If fewer than 10 teams are eligible for selection, then the Bowls can select as an at-large team any Football Bowl Subdivision team that is bowl-eligible, has won at least nine regular-season games and is among the top 18 teams in the final BCS Standings subject to the two-team limit noted above and also subject to the following: (1) if any conference has two or more teams in the top 14, then two of those teams must be selected and (2) from the teams ranked 15-18, a bowl can select only a team from a conference that has fewer than two teams in the top 14.
If expansion of the pool to 18 teams does not result in 10 teams eligible for selection, then the pool shall be expanded by blocks of 4 teams until 10 eligible teams are available subject to the two-team limit noted above and also subject to the following: (1) if any conference has two or more teams in the top 14, then two of those teams must be selected and (2) from the teams ranked 15 or lower, a bowl can select only a team from a conference that has fewer than two teams in the top 14.
Relative to the two preceding paragraphs, all teams ranked in the top 14, other than those from conferences which have already had two teams selected, must be included in the bowl selections.
Note: in order to participate in a BCS Bowl game, a team (i) must be eligible for post-season play under the rules of the NCAA and, if it not an independent, under the rules of its conference and (ii) must not have imposed sanctions upon itself prohibiting participation in a post-season game for infractions of the rules of the NCAA or the rules of its conference.
Yeah, they discussed that possibility. If Texas Tech had lost narrowly (last-minute) to Oklahoma and a rash of other upsets occured (Notre Dame over USC, FSU over Florida, Auburn over Bama, etc), then, say, Oklahoma lost narrowly to Mizzou in the Big XII CG, Texas Tech and Texas could, theoretically, be ranked #1 and #2.
Of course, that never happened.
Well, isn’t there still a chance Oklahoma and Texas end up 1-2? Florida is well behind the top 3 and if they beat Bama, is it certain they would jump up to at least 2?
if oklahoma goes to the MNC game, Texas will probably get an at-large bid to the Fiesta
Whether or not the Fiesta selects Utah or Ohio State is not really an issue – the Fiesta already has accumulated “good faith” for taking Boise State in 2005, and will probably just go for Ohio State and its travelling sweater-vested hordes. Better business decision, more TV and fan interest, etc…
USC won’t lose to UCLA.
But I would LOVE to see a Boise vs. Utah Fiesta Bowl, especially if Bama loses to Florida. The Fiesta would then become the other national championship game, between two of three remaining undefeateds. It’s certainly a far more compelling match-up than either the Rose Bowl or the Orange Bowl is going to give us.
Go Bears!

The thing is, these BCS bowls should really be an opportunity for two mid-majors to go against the “Big Dogs”.
Boise vs Utah is great, but if one team wins, it does nothing. “Good job Utah, you beat Boise State!”
It’d be better to see one of these teams take on a team that would be afraid to schedule them normally. Imagine the excitement of Utah taking down Colt McCoy and the Fighting Mack Browns of Texas or Boise State executing a Statue of Liberty to win the game against Saban’s Alabama.
This UCLA team is much worse than the improving ’Furd team from last year. I honestly give an upset 0% chance of happening. Zero. Z-E-R-O

Beginning 8:30 AM on Monday, December 1, all donors to Cal Athletics who are football season ticket holders can log onto CalBears.com/bowl to order bowl game tickets.
Beginning Wednesday, December 3 at 8:30 AM, football season ticket holders who are not donors to Cal Athletics and donors at the Coaches Club level and above who are not season ticket holders will be able to access their account to order their bowl tickets.
You may purchase tickets to the game that Cal will be playing, with limitations for each particular game. The website will detail how many tickets you may request for each bowl game. Orders will only be placed for the game in which Cal is playing and all orders are non-refundable.
If you pre-order, you are only charged for the bowl game Cal goes to. My buddy, who’s a donor, is getting us tix to the Emerald Bowl today. Bonus home game!

How would they expect you to purchase a bowl ticket if we don’t know the bowl game yet?!
If it’s the Emerald Bowl, for instance, I’m going.
If it somehow ends up being the Sun Bowl, I won’t.
They’re letting donors and season tix holders place the orders in advance, but won’t charge them until the game has been decided. So, you can place “orders” for all the bowl possibilities, but then you’re only charged and get tix for the one we go to.

I spent an hour explaining to him Cal’s potential opponents in the Holiday Bowl and how we match up against Chase Daniel etc… all to see those dreams get trampled on by the pathetic Beaver defense. I was so pissed I couldn’t even sleep… and since I can’t drink at my parent’s house… it was a long long night.
Fuck you Beavers… Fuck you.

Rec'd for excessive anger
I completely understand. I’m so pissed at the bunch of choking beavers. Ugh.
Not only did they F usinthe A… they F’ed the whole Pac10 out of millions of dollars and respect… we all know what I’m talking about… I’m just so angry I’m actually considering calling in a hit on Mike Riley…

This assumes Penn State doesn’t beat Oregon State again. Considering Saturday’s performance, it’s more likely than not.

I think he was talking about the fact that if OSU had won, wed get the money, no matter who won he ensuing CS game. You guys are in agreement. Fucker.

Well it requires a little bit of technical skill… but mostly it requires some acting… and some spy skills… the comes down to finding he network address of your company’s unrestricted proxy.
Give me a fake email address and I’ll explain over email…
Wait, you asked for a fake e-mail address…
Do you want a real e-mail address that isn’t my work address?
Actually I wanted a temp fake address so that I can safely get your non-work email address… never mind… this is fine.

That’s kinda the point… it was a chance at redeeming our conference… and introducing the PennSt defense to Quiz… now nothing changes… they still think we’re a joke.
No, they just don’t care about us. The only thing they think that’s a joke is our attachment to the Rose Bowl along with the Big Ten, which prevents the formation of a playoff system.

I for one am happy that the anger is not directed at me or the Ducks, but the Beavers.
Thanks.
It's spelled "S-h-u-n-b-o-w-l"
Oregon is not at fault… I have no resentment towards the Ducks… they’re a football team… they’re job is to go out and win the game….
It was the Beaver’s responsibility to set up the Pac10 team for the bowl season… they were at home… they were favored… in fact they had every historical and practical advantage… but they choked in record fashion…
Hey JS, can you tell me what records were broken that night? The only one I know of is the score.
Single Rushing, Total Rushing, Total Offense, Points Allowed by OSU, Total Score and we broke the streak of not winning in Reser Stadium since 1996.
It's spelled "S-h-u-n-b-o-w-l"
they had every historical and practical advantage
They did not have the brothers Rodgers. Also, apparently, a defense.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
True, but I don’t think it was the offense that lost them that game. Quiz could have made the score closer… or they could have scored sooner… but I am convinced that the lack of Quiz wasn’t the difference in the game.
You’d think they have remembered how to beat a spread offense. I guess they thought they were playing Cal and kept rushing up the middle instead of tackling at the edges or cover the corners. Almost all of their touchdowns came down that right hashmark.

Tedford gets several shout-outs in Kiffin-UT press conference:
from Kawakami’s blog:
* Of all the people I expected to be mentioned multiple times as major Kiffin influences, I did not expect Jeff Tedford to pre-dominate.
Kiffin played under and coached with Tedford at Fresno State, and Tedford received five shout-outs, if I tallied correctly, including one from the Tennessee AD.
Pete Carroll got four. Jm Sweeney and Tom Coughlin two.
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
word...
Tedford was a volunteer assistant coach and QB coach at Fresno St….I guess Kiffin worked under him in some capacity.
Tedford might have been the smartest guy in Fresno…
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
That’s like being the smartest kid with [the rest of this joke has been censored for political correctness].

Fresno State coach Pat Hill acknowledged that he interviewed for the Washington coaching job. Other names in the Seattle Times story: Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly, Texas Tech’s Mike Leach and Utah’s Kyle Whittingham.
Mike Leach? Yeah right.
Of this list I’d probably most like to see Kelly.
I think Pat Hill might be the scariest name out there…he’d have to lose the “play anyone, anytime” shtick. UDub needs easier OOC opponents for now. Yet, it’s that balls-to-the-walls attitude that could make Team Purple relevant again.
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
I don’t see why leach would lateral to Washington. Unless he thinks he has a better shot to get to the NCG at UW – I don’t think that’s the case.
As for Pat Hill, I’m not too worried. Fresno Tech State College hasn’t put together a very good team since 2001, though his 2004 and 2005 teams were OK. It would be interesting to see Hill in the thick of the Pac-10 recruiting race.
I'm not even sure UW is a lateral move
might even be a step back. Yes, UDub might have a rich tradition but they are real bad and TTU’s been right up there. I thought he’d be a great fit at Tennessee but they were interested in Kiffin for some reason.
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
Pat Hill is an old fart. He might’ve been innovative at one time, but his best years are past him.
Kelly is probably the best name of the bunch.

He is the best 'name'
after what he’s done with D’Antonio’s players in the Big Least… but I wouldn’t like any of those hires really

And I would be too, considering how easy it is to win 12 games in the WAC every year and given about a 30-40% chance of getting a BCS midmajor berth. Far easier than winning at Washington.

I have mixed emotions
while I don’t want UDub to steal recruits from our backyard (see UC Eugene), I think that program being prominent helps the Pac-10 out as a whole. So we need them to be good, but not good enough to beat our Bears on a regular basis.
Hell, that being said…anyone looks good when they are undefeated…
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
Kelly...meh
what has he done? He could be an out-of-the-blue type hire but I don’t think anyone knows much about him or his potential.
Phil Fullmer will probably take a year off…but that guy has mad national recruiting skillz….he never ever stops recruiting.
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
Kelly's been talked up for the last couple years
If I remember, he was a popular choice for the Michigan job after Miles passed but before RichRod showed up. And before he was at Cincy, Kelly did good things at Central Michigan, turning around a terrible team and winning the MAC in three years. I think he’s a good coach, and if he wants a bigger challenge, he’ll get better offers (I heard a rumor today that he’s been offered the ND job, pending a buyout of Weis), but Cincy’s got a pretty easy path to the BCS.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
He has about the same record as Tedford did in his first four years of operation (and let’s face it, the Pac-10 was in a transition mode when Cal was dominating). Although he’s not quite at his level I’d say he isn’t too far behind. Either way it’s a huge upgrade for UW.
by BearsNecessity on Dec 1, 2008 2:21 PM PST up reply actions
I still think turning around Cal in the Pac-10 is more impressive than what Kelly has done at the Nati. Also, Kelly has only been the coach for almost two seasons.
Like I said, Kelly’s a step down from Tedford, and he doesn’t have to deal with USC every year. But Tedford didn’t inherit horribly undertalented Cal teams. They just had a horrible coach who didn’t know what he hell he was doing.

The Big Least
plays a BUNCH of OOC games, many of which are of inferior opponents. Combine this with one of the worst conferences in the BCS and I’m not impressed yet.
That being said he might be successful at Miss. St. who has a tough time recruiting in the powerful SEC.
To me, UDub is too big of a step for him. However, he’s probably less risky than hiring a coordinator who’s never been a head coach.
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
Brian Kelly built what success CMU and LeFever are enjoying today. He’s taken Dantonio’s players and overachieved, in spite of playing Oklahoma OOC.
I think Washington would be smart to take him.
you might be right…I just view UDub, given their history, location, and academics, to be a pretty attractive coaching gig and I’m not sure this guy’s the best candidate out there.
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
Bleh. I hate this history nonsense. It’s a terrible reason for hiring a football coach.
Petersen is the best guy out there, and maybe Kelly. But I’m sure there are some OCs/DCs that are also worth exploring (hell Bob Gregory has thrown his hat back into the ring with his performance this year).

Fulmer's done
The guy gave his life to Tennessee, as a player, assistant, and then head coach. He’s not young, and I think UT is giving him a job in administration (not AD). No way he ends up anywhere else.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!
How about
Steve Sarkesian…I bet he’d suck as a coach but he might steal some recruits away from $C…
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
Why would he leave USC when he’s probably going to take over whenever The Devil leaves.
Proud member of The Little Tedford Suburban Achievers
I believe he almost left them for the Raiders
Moreover, rumor has it that if The Devil leaves for a team like the niners than he’s taking all of his assistants with him.
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
Why would he ever leave?
He already makes $4.25 mil + bonuses… and he’s beloved by all of SoCal… and he has the most attractive gig in college football… and he’s already coached in the NFL unsuccessfully… and he’s stated how much he loves his job
the only problem is the BCS nonsense, but I honestly don’t see that being enough
I see him as the next Paterno/Bowden. He won’t leave until he’s on his deathbed…
...Scuzzlin fo a Jack in Da Box
Personal accomplishment – he’s seen as a failure in the NFL. His ego makes him want to win a Super Bowl!

But Singletary just won @ Buffalo so I bet the york’s give him a 4-yr contract so Petey’s here to stay
The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.
In all likelihood they’d be playing a Big East team. Pitt probably. And the Big East is horrid. Even worse than the ACC. They’ll be favored with the Quizz coming back.
by BearsNecessity on Dec 1, 2008 1:54 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, they will be favored, but I would be worried if they get put up against West Virginia. Whether Quizz is back or not does not mean they can stop the spread option.
