Interview With Jon Okanes of the Contra Costa Times
We have contacted Mr. Okanes, Cal sports writer for the Contra Costa Times. We read slash link his stories here on a daily basis and ask delightfully obnoxious questions in his weekly chat. He has agreed to do an inteview. This is a great opportunity to get to better know a major source of Cal-related news.
Since we do all this for you (our readers) we felt it most prudent to open it up. What questions would you like to see asked? What do you want to know about? The day to day activities of a Cal sports writer? His personal back story? Post your questions in here and we'll send the best to him for the interview. Thanks to Mr. Okanes for this great opportunity. Go Bears!

Why are Cal fans so lame?
Alex Mack, the smartest dude on the Cal team is only at 8%. Can you tell Cal fans to vote more?
This is my cause right now, probably because It’s easier to get Mack this award than beating USC.
(Note for CGB people: If you just delete the cookie for the website, you can revote. In mozilla firefox, go to Tools > Options > Show Cookies > find the football.seniorclassaward.com, highlight and hit remove cookie. Then you can revote.)
Can't somebody else do it?
I was hoping some Nerdlinger would come along and write a bot or something to vote for us.
how? Did you change computers? Delete your cookies and/or browsing history?

Still 8%
But the lead guy has dropped to 30%; we must be making headway!

This is great for you guys. I was hoping you’d eventually get to do an interview with JO.
I’m wondering what sort of relationship he has with the team. I’d like to know how close he is with the team, given how closely he follows them. Is he just a guy with a laptop who watches them from a distance, or does he know many the players quite well? How well do the players know him? Do they all know his name, recognize him, and like him? Do they interact as non-professionals (person-to-person) in addition to their interactions on a professional basis (interviews, etc)?

Awesome! This is a really popular feature on AN
and would work really well for CGB. It would be awesome to get JT and maybe a player, too.
I like the questions you brought up.
I’m wondering:
How does he draw the line with reporter and columnist?
His paper-based publications would require more reporting, while the blog would require more of JO’s opinion. In my opinion, I’d like more of JO’s opinion in his blog. A follow up would be:
“How much time are you supposed to devote to paper vs. blog articles?”
Matt Maiocco does a fabulous job of both while covering the Niners…some might say Maiocco’s the face of the Press Democrat.

What’s great about the job, what sucks about it, how often does he learn things he can’t divulge to public, which stadium is best to visit, which is worst to visit, how often he reads this blog (if ever), how would he rate Tedford’s tenure until now, how he thinks Cal will do next year, how well he thinks Cal has done recruiting so far, if he prefers herbivorous dinosaurs over carnivorous.

And if not Stegosaurus, please justify.
I may not be a funny bastard, but at least I'm a bastard.
I’d like to know if he was a Cal fan before he got the job, if not what college did he goto/root for. Also, how accessible Cal football is compared to other schools (U$C seems to let the whole world come and go to practices and posts team meetings on YouTube, etc.).
And does he keep in contact with any of the other Cal beat writers in the Bay Area? If so, how much of a jerk is Wilner?

I would ask
“Saturday’s game highlighted the need to have 2 QB’s ready, just like 2 RB’s need to be ready. Next year will you split 1st team reps between Riley and Mansion, provided that Brock deboards the Brock Mansion Party Yacht that was off the coast of Washington last weekend?”

My questions to Mr. Okanes
First off, thank you for the regular updates on his contra costa times blog.
1. Which current senior Cal football players do you see going to the NFL and in which round?
2. Which offensive player has the most potential? Defensive player?
3. What kind of a difference in the offensive scheme does the new offensive coordinator bring. Is it for the better or for worse?
4. Do you think the defense will be even better next year? (-3 linebackers, but a bunch of experienced non-seniors coming back.)
5. Do you think the offense will be even better next year? (-Mack, but again, most players coming back)
6. What is your line on the USC-Cal game?

My questions
1. Who is the biggest tool: Ray Ratto, Jake Curtis, Jon Wilner, … or Carolyn Jones?
2. Has this Cal team exceeded, fallen short, or performed right to your pre-season expectations? Who or what has been the biggest surprise? Good surprise (better than expected)? Bad surprise (worse than expected)?
3. There was a lot of turnover in the coaching staff after last season. Things appear to have worked out fantastically on the defensive side so far. But what about the offense? Will Cignetti provide some long-term stability at the OC position, something that has been missing since the departure of Cortez?
4. What kind of tequila will you be buying Joe Kapp after Cal clinches in next trip to the Rose Bowl?
5. If there was one thing you could change about the game-day experience of Cal football, what would it be?
6. The Pac-10 venue you most enjoy visiting is _______ . Why?
Go Bears!

Real Actual Questions That Are Real And Actual Questions, Really
1. From what you can gauge, how do players learn to handle being “football stars,” with sixty thousand fans screaming at them once a week, and being regular college kids with homework and classes and parties?
2. This is sort of a pessimistic question. I don’t know the exact number, but it seems like the average college team has 80-110 roster players. In a very good graduating class, 4-5 players might be drafted. 3-4 will get signed, 1-2 might start that year, and maybe 1 will start consistently year in and year out. How focused are the players on making the NFL and ONLY making the NFL? That is, how many of them are looking only to have a career in the NFL, and how do they wrap their heads around the odds that it just might not (in fact, probably will not) happen? With the amount of time and dedication the players put into the team, do they ever
consider that the NFL just won’t be in their future?
3. Fifteen years ago, the “media” consisted of newspaper and TV. Players could fairly easily be sheltered from sensationalism and press-related distractions pretty much by not watching the sports report and not reading the papers. Now, in addition to these the world has 24/7 ESPN, internet, cell phones, blogs, blackberries, blueberries, and chuckberries. Sports information, hype, and distraction is available to everyone, all the time. Has the coaching staff adapted to try and completely shelter the players from the media? Or is there more of an attitude that “it’s there, they’re gonna see this ridiculous media, might as well prepare them for it.” How do players deal with this constant barrage of media?

Great get... JO is someone I respect a ton
only one for me:
1) Ciganetti: Tedford spinoff or his own man… your analysis on the play calling thus far pls.

4. In press conferences and interviews, Tedford seems more or less unshaken by the events of the past 2 years, in spite of the fanbase calling for, at times, just about everyone affiliated with the team’s head on a spike. Does the fanbase (or donorbase, w/e) register at all with him, or are we more or less unwanted distractions? Is he conscious of the vitriol? Does it faze him? (I know he has said that it doesn’t, but from what YOU have noticed personally, does it?) That said, is he conscious of the praise he receives?
5. What is Tedford’s management style? Is it kum-ba-yah/yoga class/try-your-best feel goodery? Is it quarterly objectives and performance targets and revenues (wins) and losses (losses?) Is it all-hardass all-the-time (drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket)? What is behind the brick wall we see at press conferences?
6. How do top-notch players balance being a star (above even their teammates) with being a football player? It seems like Desean had trouble balancing being a total stud with the football (which in turn helped him play better and led to points), and being a team player (which obviously helps the team, which leads to points). Can a little “attitude” help, or is it always a hindrance?

I’m very interested in. It strikes me that Tedford is a pretty stoic disciplinarian, using a stare instead of screaming. I’d like to know if that is true, but I’d like the question expanded to the personalities and styles of the assistants, too. I thought that Ratto’s article about Gould tearing into Vareen and Best was interesting, and want to hear more about how the coaches motivate.

Yes. What’s bad about “D-Hag?” It’s pronounced “DEE Hayg” … in case you thought it was pronounced some other way. Of course, knowing you Twist, you probably thought it was pronounced some other way. (sigh)

I pronounced it Doy Hug. It’s because I’m Dutch. That’s how its pronounced in Dutchsylvania.
