DBD 11.26.08 How does Justin Bobby fit into all this?
Ooooh, so much drama last night. Audrina v. Justin Bobby! Audrina v. LC! Jake v. TwistNHook.
Yes, finally, my life was just like the Hills. Last night I went over to our newfound allies, Building The Dam, and read this inanely cocky post. Lord knows the karma gods aren't going to be happy after paragraphs like this:
So I wanted to know your opinions, since you've all been watching the Beavers all year long, with your team's only hope of something great being the "chance" to upset Oregon State on the road for the first time in a generation. If the ducks could pull that off, it would clearly be one of their best wins in a long, long time--a huge, partial dignity-restoring win for your program. Also, because none of us have really been able to watch your team, since no network wants to televise any of your games (I would have to consider that a blessing for all of us) we don't know a lot about it this year. You run the wishbone, right?
Basically, the entire post can be described as "Beavs Fans Don't Care About Quack People."
So, I went over there to explain to these people not to tempt the fates:
As a Cal, this pregame trashtalk makes me freak out karmically. I’m rooting for you now, OSU. Dont fuck it up, like we have so many times before!
When I got back, I had a message telling me I needed to speak only about Disney shows and that I had a 6 week mandatory sensativity training to attend. Ai! What is it with these Oregonians and their seeming inability to handle mature situations. The Blazers blog put the kibosh on ANY swearing.
So, I did the training and I speak only of Hannah Montana now. Perhaps BtD will accept me again. I'm sure we'll find out on the SBN Aftershow. I just hope that doosh with the glasses isn't on there. I hate that guy!
Mens soccer advances in NCAA Tourney after beating UCSB in 2OT:
SANTA BARBARA - Playing through intermittent rainfall, the No. 9 California men's soccer team defeated No. 19 UC Santa Barbara, 3-2, in double overtime in the second round of the NCAA College Cup at Harder Stadium on Tuesday night. The Golden Bears (12-3-5), who had jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see UCSB (10-7-5) tie the match, were able to move on to round three with the overtime score. Tonight's game also marked the first-ever home NCAA Tournament loss for UCSB.
Sophomore forward Andrew Wiedeman scored twice for the Bears, including the gamewinner. Wiedeman's first goal came in the 61st minute and gave Cal a 2-0 lead. He ended the contest with his second score in the 103rd minute. Wiedeman increased his team lead in goals with 11 and points (27).
Fellow sophomore Davis Paul scored the game's first goal in the 23rd minute. Senior Chris Deal headed a ball to Paul, and he was able to blast a shot from the top corner of the box past the keeper to the far right post. Paul's goal tied him for second on the team in that category with three. His four shots tonight were a team high.
Junior Stefan Frei had one of his best games of the year with a season-best 11 saves. Although Frei allowed two goals, he was brilliant for most of the night, holding off a UCSB team that outshot the Bears, 24-12. The Gaucho goals were scored two and a half minutes apart in the 68th and 70th minute.
Womens B-Ball team goes abroad for tourney:
The California Golden Bears are coming off a 66-52 upset victory over No. 2/3 Rutgers Friday, Nov. 21, at Haas Pavilion. The victory was the sixth time the Bears have beaten a ranked team since head coach Joanne Boyle took over the program in 2005-06. Rutgers was the highest ranked opponent that any Bears team has defeated since they upset No. 2 Stanford in 1992. The Bears pulled off the stunner while playing shorthanded with neither senior post Devanei Hampton nor junior post Rama N'diaye suiting up for the contest. Both players had been practicing all week and were listed as game time decisions for the game. Their status for this week's tournament has also yet to be determined.
Redshirt junior guard Alexis Gray-Lawson led the team with 25 points in the Rutgers game. Gray-Lawson is averaging 14.7 ppg this season. She comes into the tournament 31 points shy of becoming the 20th player in Cal women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points.
Senior forward Ashley Walker posted the 36th double-double of her career, scoring 16 points with 10 rebounds against Rutgers. She is currently ranked second in the Pac-10 in scoring (22.0 ppg) and fourth in rebounding (11.7 rpg). Walker, who scored the 1,500th point of her career in the game against Nevada, continues moving up the career scoring and rebounding lists. She needs 14 points to move into fifth place on the all-time scoring list and 16 rebounds to move into third place on the rebounding list.
Mens water polo heads to Malibu for post-season play:
Bear Bites
The No. 5 seeded California men's water polo team (18-7, 4-4), the defending 2006 and 2007 national champions begin postseason play this weekend with in the MPSF Tournament. The Golden Bears face No. 4 seed UCLA (15-6, 5-3) on Friday, Nov. 28 at 3 p.m. at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool in Malibu. Last weekend Cal closed out the regular season by falling to No. 3 Stanford, 9-8, in Berkeley and by defeating Pacific, 10-7, in Stockton on Sunday.
About the MPSF Tournament
The 2008 MPSF Tournament features the top eight teams in the MPSF standings. Besides Cal's 3 p.m. match versus UCLA, other Friday matches include No. 1-seed USC (24-0, 8-0) versus No. 8-seed UC Irvine (10-13, 1-7) at 10 a.m., No. 2-seed Stanford (22-4, 6-2) versus No. 7-seed Long Beach State (14-15, 2-6) at 11:30 a.m. and No. 3-seed Pepperdine (19-6, 6-2) versus No. 6-seed UC Santa Barbara (15-10, 4-4) at 1:30 p.m. If the Bears win Friday, they would play the winner of USC and UC Irvine match at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29. If Cal wins Saturday, it would play in the MPSF championship match at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30. Cal finished third in last year's MPSF Tournament when it fell to UC Irvine in a semifinal match and defeated Stanford, 12-9, to take third place. Cal won the 2006, 2002, 1995, 1993 and 1992 MPSF Tournaments, which is more titles more than any other MPSF team. Ticket information and complete bracket and results of the 2008 MPSF Tournament is available at http://www.pepperdinesports.com.
Okanes Tuesday night update (but not by Okanes):
Hello everyone. This is Curtis Pashelka. I attended Tuesday night’s practice at Memorial, filling in for Jonathan.
There’s not much to report. LB Zack Follett missed practice because a schoolwork-related activity, coach Jeff Tedford said. Tedford also said lineman Kevin Bemoll, who was moved to the offensive line as a stopgap to provide some depth, will be moved back to defense once the season’s over. Also, depending on how next week’s practice goes, Tedford said QB Nate Longshore might get some snaps in the Washington game.
Tedford commented on Washington, and how last year’s game was brought up in today’s team meeting. In that game, the Huskies dominated the line of scrimmage and piled up some 360 yards on the ground and scored three rushing touchdowns.
“That had never happened to us before, since we’ve been here, that I can remember. So there’s going to be a lot of motivation to make sure we take care of our assignments and do our job so that doesn’t happen again,” said Tedford, who added that any leftover excitement about Saturday’s win
over Stanford has been officially put to bed.
BBall recruiting class gets little respect:
The recruiting Web site rivals.com rated the class Cal signed last week as only the No. 8 group in the Pac-10 Conference. The Bears signed post players Markhuri Sanders-Frison and Bak Bak, but also have a commitment from point guard Brandon Smith of De La Salle High, who is expected to attend without a scholarship his freshman year.
Here’s how rivals ranked the Pac-10 recruiting classes (with national rankings in parenthesis): 1. UCLA (8); 2. Washington (20); 3. Arizona State; 4. USC; 5. Oregon State; 6. Washington State; 7, Oregon; 8. Cal; 9. Stanford; 10. Arizona
HOW COULD THEY NOT RESPECT BAK-BAK!?!?!??!?!? Go Bears!
The opinions expressed in a FanPost are not necessarily those of the California Golden Blogs or any of its authors. However, they are just as important as the opinions of any of the authors. And doubly so as compared to TwistNHook!

Really amazing how weak the other mid-majors are outside of the Mountain West and WAC. Does anyone seriously think a team from those other mid-majors could compete with a team from the top-half of a BCS conference? Makes you wonder whether those two, the Mountain West and WAC should just merge and former a near BCS conference.

As far as other midmajors outside the WAC and MWC – don’t forget about little Sun Belt Troy. They’ve pulled off some great wins and near-wins in the past couple seasons.

i doubt the mountain west and the wac are going to merge anytime soon
remember, it’s only been about 10 years since the mountain west broke away from the 16-team mega-WAC conference. there were solid reasons for that dissolution.
i don’t think a ‘best of the rest in the west’ conference would be a world-beater, or be better than the Pac-10 on a regular basis, but if you took boise and fresno and replaced the bottom couple teams in the Mountain, you’d compare pretty favorably with the Big East.
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Kennard enjoys his visit
I’ll put up some select quotes from the Rivals article:
Cal’s program is the only school of the four offering an opportunity to frequently rush the passer from the hybrid 3-4 strongside outside linebacker position.
After saying how he hung out with Pain Train and talked with him about pass rushing:
Kennard admits that he is used to playing defensive end, but that he knows he can succeed at the outside linebacker system. When asked if he would enjoy three or four years playing that position, Kennard emphasized the importance that that possibility will play in choosing a school.
As BearTerritory documented in 5-star Kennard, he loves to rush the passer like any defensive end, but he may get more unchallenged opportunities at the new position.
“That (the outside linebacker position) is basically what it will come down to,” Kennard said. “I’ve been talking to Coach Tosh Lupoi a lot and he sees me playing that position. I’ve got to see what is best for me but I really do like how that player is used.”
Kennard elaborated on the importance of the position and what it means for his future as a defensive player.
“I’ve got to take an official or two more to see what I actually want, but all the things the coach has showed me seem like a lot of fun,” he described. “It seems like both a fun and productive position. I’ve got to figure things out these next couple of weeks.”
“Berkeley is awesome, they feed you like no other,” Kennard said laughing, “We went down to San Francisco a few times on the trip, which was a lot of fun.”
When asked to summarize his interest in the Cal program, the standout sounded as if Cal will make the final cut for his list of schools.
“It really is a great program,” Kennard said. “The coaches are really sincere, I will have to seriously evaluate it when I make my decision.”
It was originally assumed that Kennard would announce his decision at signing day, but fans may be in for a sooner announcement.
“It might be sooner than signing day,” Kennard said. “I want to take all five officials and then we will see.”

plus he came during Big Game week. How many times do you get to see fans rush the field in person? That’s awesome. The flipside is that he’ll be seeing the rest of the schools last and Berkeley could be forgotten if we don’t stay on top of this guy. I don’t think he’ll be visiting the other schools when they have games or are even practicing…so it might be difficult for him to get the anywhere near the experience he got at Cal.
Shrewd move by Tedford, in my opinion.

SF to consider "congestion toll"
I hope this fails. They say the toll fees will go to improving transit options. It seems to me there will be a significant amount of people all of a sudden taking transit. This will leave them unprepared. When the toll money finally comes in and gets spent to upgrade transit, a significant lag time will have elapsed.
I’ve taken transit for the past 14 months using a combination of Amtrak, BART, and MUNI. Amtrak gets delayed by Union Pacific trains/people committing suicide (really…it happens at least 1/mo), BART stops too much and really only serves S. San Francisco and the financial district, and MUNI (N-Judah) is painfully slow. I saved money and reduced my door-to-door commute time by 50% just by driving. I’m all for the environmental benefits of transit, but it has got to be improved.
I attribute this to all of the jackasses who thought it would be a great idea to build the most condensed city on the tip of a peninsula.

Men's Soccer
Big, big victory in the rain for Grimes’s boys last night. To have a two-goal, second-half lead evaporate in the blink of the eye—on the road—but still recover to pull it out in OT is huge. Now it’s on to Maryland this weekend to avenge the other football Bears’ earlier loss!
To be honest, though, the road ahead is anything but easy. Cal was absolutely screwed by the NCAA tournament committee. Not only did the first-round bye they deserved get handed to a lower-ranked UCSB (not that it ultimately mattered), but now they have to travel across the country to face (potentially) not one, but two, of the country’s Top 3 teams in order to advance to the College Cup Final Four in Frisco, Texas. Talk about a “Group of Death”: #2 Creighton, #3 Maryland, #11 Cal, and #22 UConn. Here’s a link to the bracket.
With the nation’s best rugby team, as well as elite teams in both American-rules “gridiron” and Association-rules “soccer”, I think it’s safe to say Cal is the best all-around football school in the country. All we need now is a good Aussie-rules squad, and we’ve completed the grand slam.

True Story
So last night I went bowling at Albany Bowl. As I near the front desk, I overhear the guy say “Cal….recruiting” in passing. I glance around the bowling alley, and notice about 4 lanes being taken up by huge guys in Cal clothing. I could pick out Cam Jordan (who throws the bowling ball like its a fucking tennis ball), I think Verran Tucker (or another guy on the Cal team who looks a lot like a pharaoh), Worrell Williams, and Jahvid Best (who wasn’t bowling…arm injury still?). There were several others and a bunch of girls too.
Now I don’t know if there were actually recruits there, but there were a bunch of youngish looking guys hanging around too (then again there are always youngish people hanging around at Albany Bowl). The only one I think I’d recognize would be Adam Hall because of the hair. There was also a large white guy with really long hair too. Anyone know who that might be? Odd, because I figured the recruits would be taken around over the weekend, but maybe they stayed until Tuesday? No idea, why else would the guy at the front desk say “recruiting?”
Either way I resisted my urge to go down to their lanes and ask them all about football and generally be the white nerdy booger that would drive any self-respecting recruit to UT or SC. So I limited myself to congratulating Jahvid Best on the Furd game and telling him to kill UW.
Either way that makes 2 consecutive nights I’ve run into random Cal players in random places. I wonder who I might see tonight.

Nobody has claimed responsiblity yet...
Gunmen have opened fire at a number of sites in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), killing at least 16 people and injuring others, local reports say. Police officials said shooting was continuing and that the incidents appeared to be terrorist attacks. An unconfirmed report on the Times of India website said 80 people had been killed, and more than 250 injured.
There has been a wave of bombings in Indian cities in recent months which has left scores of people dead. Most of the attacks have been blamed on Muslim militants, although police have also arrested suspected Hindu extremists.
Indiscriminate firing
On Wednesday, gunmen opened fire in at least seven sites, including a train station, two five-star hotels, a hospital and a restaurant popular with tourists. At least two blasts, suspected to be grenade attacks, were reported alongside the shootings. Police said the gunmen had fired indiscriminately. At least 10 people were killed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji railway station, they said.
“The terrorists have used automatic weapons and in some places grenades have been lobbed,” said AN Roy, police commissioner of Maharashtra state. Some gunmen were still holed up in buildings that had been targeted, officials said. One eyewitness told the BBC he had seen a gunman opening fire in the lobby of Taj Mahal hotel.
The other hotel targeted was the Oberoi.

AlJazerra speculates this is the same group responsible for other coordinated attacks of late:
Co-ordinated attacks
India has witnessed a series of co-ordinated attacks in recent months. A little-known Islamic group, the Islamic Security Force-Indian Mujahedeen, claimed responsibility for serial blasts last month in which 80 people died in India’s northeast state of Assam. A total of 12 explosions shook the northeastern state, six of them ripping through crowded areas in the main city of Guwahati. Six weeks earlier, the capital New Delhi had been hit by a series of bombs in crowded markets that left more than 20 people dead, the attacks were claimed by a group calling itself the Indian Mujahedeen.
This also could be Kashmir extremists from Pakistan…. as a retaliation for our recent targeted strikes in the border regions.
