Interview with Stanford Trombone player Gary Tyrrell
We have contacted former Stanford trombone player Gary Tyrrell about doing an interview. If you don't know who he is, please click on the link above.
We realize he has probably rehashed the events of that fateful day 1,000 different times to 1,000 different people. But he has been kind enough to offer rehashing 1,001 to us. Similar to the Okanes interview (which is hopefully coming soon, he is extraordinarily busy during this part of the year), we thought it prudent to open it up to the readership. What questions would you like to see answered? And please keep it respectful. Thanks!

Tyrrell
You know, I’ve seen a bunch of interviews with him and he really does seem at peace with his part in this whole thing … to the point of totally embracing it. Which is very cool.
I suppose a legit question would be to ask if he is competely sick of people asking him the same question only to get the same response!
Or maybe ask him what his favorite variety of apple is. He won’t be expecting that!

That would be rather hilarious to interview him about things that, in no way, related to the Play.
“Gary, let me ask, boxers or briefs?”
“Gary, what’s your solution to the economic crisis?”
“Gary, do you think Oklahoma, Texas Tech, or Texas should go to the National Championship game?”
Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.

I’d like to hear what he has to say about how to get Stanford fans back into football. Drawing 20k butts in seats (I’m sure the paid crowd is more than that) for a decently exciting team is pathetic on a number of levels.

I can't believe this...
what do you say…
“How’d it feel to one minute be playing your instrument…and then the next you’re getting decleated?”
Definitely deserves mad props if he does the interview…of course…I wouldn’t trust the ‘furd band as far as I could throw ’em…you never know if he’ll pull out any last minute ha-has.

that's cool...it's not entirely his fault...
he followed the rest of his bandmates onto the field…
here’s one question:
Why wasn’t the kickoff retried with the game clock restarted? You know, like a do-over? What if one of the lateral guys had been tackled by a band member or fan? Couldn’t they argue obstruction?

This classic article explains it better than I, but I think it likely that the refs would have awarded us the TD if they had. In the article, they are very happy they didn’t have to make a call like that.

Ask him what it was like to be on That’s Incredible! (A TV show from the 80’s for you youngsters out there. Anyone remember that episode when they had the Chinese guy with a twin brother growing out of the side of his head?) and what it was like to meet Fran Tarkenton in person.
Does he make money off TV appearances?
Do people recognize him?
Does he remember meeting me at the 1999 Saylor & Hill Big Game party? I was the guy in the straw hat band playing the trumpet.
Was he drunk at the time?

Does he still have the trombone?
Has Steve Bartman ever asked him for advice?

I once heard that Stanfurd fans despise him while Cal fans love him and often buy him beers, with that in mind…

Any truth to the rumours that Tedford is moving Syd'Quan to offense?
Or provoke with a question like “was his knee down before the lateral was made?”

If that game could be done over again, even if he would live forever in obscurity, would he want The Play to not happen and Stanfurd to win?

Here's a question....
….The ’Furd band has always maintained that they went out on the field only after they thought the play was dead. However it is my recollection from being at the game that they were at least out to the five yard line prior to the kickoff. What does Gary remember about that, if anything.

Now that your days with the Stanfurd Band are long over, have you ever considered learning to play a musical instrument?

Coming from a trombone player.
Do you still play trombone? If you do what is your practice routine? What brand and model of trombone do use? Have you played trombones with the Greenhoe, Thayer, or traditional rotor? If you have which have you felt is better and why? Do you belong to the International Trombone Association?
