Danzig, do you have a torrent of last year’s Big Game? It’s the only one I’m missing from the last two seasons.

And I’m wondering if there’s a good site to find football torrents altogether.

by BearsNecessity on Nov 23, 2008 5:11 PM PST reply actions

yes, i’ll upload it and post a link. This might take some time.

by danzig on Nov 23, 2008 5:36 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, I would like a torrent of last year’s Big Game too, please.

I’ll take a number 2 with that please.

Can someone please explain how this torrent business

works? I know the idea behind it, but what do I need to do to convert what I download to a DVD?

by 33SwisherSweet on Nov 23, 2008 5:35 PM PST reply actions

The file you download is designed to be written onto a DVD. Simply pop a DVD into your drive and tell your computer to write the file onto the DVD. Once it’s complete, you can put it in any DVD player and it will play like any standard movie.

Unless you know how to protect yourself, I wouldn’t recommend it. You can watch this vid on how to get started, but be prepared for your computer to get attacked.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFN4JwjiyKU&fmt=18

I’d try it only if you have system restore turned on… run peerguardian2, have a good antivrirus, have spybot immunization, have your firewall turned on and are not using a wireless router. If you aren’t protecting yourself, then be prepared to buy a new computer after you get attacked.

by danzig on Nov 23, 2008 6:01 PM PST up reply actions

Don't fear-monger too much...

Torrents are generally safe, especially video and audio files. Not that harmful.

Definitely DO NOT run any program you download unless you know to trust it, and if you do, be prepared with anti-virus, etc as recommended by danzig. But for video files, and especially this torrent, not too much to worry about.

Or get a Mac and never have to worry again. :)

For downloading torrents, on Windows I recommend µTorrent, and on Mac, Transmission. Then just open the .torrent file in there and things will start going.

Never get a Mac

Maybe if you used your computer for things other than downloading pictures of hamburgers you would appreciate Macs more, Jughead.
Come to think of it, an Apple could render those hamburgers faster and prettier than Vista.

I guess if you are OK with buying a ton of anti-virus software and dealing with errors then a mac isn’t for you.

Care to elaborate?

I’m perfectly willing to admit that Macs have their issues, but I’d like to see this blog do better than to make broad, unsupported statements like this?

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

by ragnarok on Nov 24, 2008 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

You would like that, wouldn’t you?

Well, I’m not going to let that happen. No, from now on, I’m ONLY going to make broad, unsupported statements. Like this:

Nate Longshore’s religious views and recent marriage kept him from ever succeeding at Cal!

Your move, sane people.

Dude, seriously, you don't have any idea what you're talking about.

No offense taken (thanks for the clarification) and nothing personal here either, but I’m a computer science major and frankly, expert, and I think I know what I’m doing.

The idea of putting a nice graphical interface on top of a secure and stable Unix core is just plain correct, and I cannot tell you how wrong Windows’ architecture is in comparison. I’ve written an operating system (or part of one) and trust me, Apple has it right.

On top of that their hardware is just excessively high quality. It just works. It’s good shit. You get what you pay for.

You’re right in one way – if all you do is download pictures, post comments on blogs, and browse your e-mail, you can get that for a lot cheaper. But there are a lot of great things you get for your money and a blanket statement about them being “pieces of shit” is just plain wrong.

Whatever though. I’m not going to argue, just can’t let that stand as I sit here typing on something that is the opposite of a piece of shit.

by trisweb on Nov 24, 2008 9:58 PM PST up reply actions

Dude, seriously, you don’t have any idea what YOU’RE talkinga bout. I’ma polisci major and frankly, an expert on sounding like I know what I’m talking about. So, there!

Macs suck. A lot. Because their gizmodos are old in comparison to the fast moving gizmodos of Window 2008!

Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.

I’m happy that my ability to sound like I know what I’m talking about has only increased with age. My business minor definitely helped with that!

No I don't doubt you know more than I

I am an EECS major but I’m still taking CS184 and CS162 while you’re doing something else out there in the real world.

And yes my blanket statement was probably overdone, but I stand by my overpriced statement. First of all I dual boot Ubuntu on my laptop (and yes I do most of my work on the shell… come on you took CS classes here too… it’s gmake or bust). Funny story: I still hate makefiles but I am better at customizing makefiles than I am at figuring out the where the hell a setting is in Visual Studio mainly because I’m used to it now.

Anyway I am a big time PC gamer (and a self-proposed Nintendo fanboy. I will kill anyone that stands in the way of my Wii and GameCube). Sure I can play TF2 or Left 4 Dead with the GPU Apple supplies but I cannot play at a decent frame rate Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Far Cry, Fallout 3, etc. This is assuming I installed XP/Vista on the Apple hardware. The worst thing from my viewpoint is the price. Charging $200 for a 2GB stick of DDR2 RAM is price gouging as far as I am concered. Last summer I built a PC (Quad Core Q6600, 4GiB DDR3, 320GB 7200RPM, 8800GTS 640MB, Audigy XFi XtremeGamer, Vista Home Premium x64 OEM) at around $1400. Yes this didn’t include my monitor (Samsung 226BW), keyboard (Saitek Eclipse), mouse (Logitech MX518) but even taking the cost of those out of a base Apple hardware of similar spec I assure you it will cost more than what I paid. Also if I want to upgrade anything from mobo to harddrive all I have to do is, 1) buy part cheaper than Apple sells it for from newegg.com, 2) unplug, 3) open case, 4) find location, 5) install, 6) (if it was a mobo/cpu) call Microsoft, wait on line for 10mins, talk to a fellow Indian, get new activation, 7) PROFIT! Outside of a few parts I don’t see a Mac being as easy to upgrade.

Next concern OS. The only product I’ve had trouble running is Cisco VPN client mainly because they don’t support 64bit operating systems (WTF Cisco!). Outside of forcing the VPN to install and failing miserably I have yet to suffer a crash on Vista. Now my knowledge of operating systems may be limited to NachOS (from Cs162) and reading the BSD 4.4 spec and kernel code but I am fairly certain that the allegations that Vista is crap is overblown. Firstly statistics show that the #1 cause of crashes on Vista are graphics drivers (namely nVidia) which is out of Microsoft’s hands, and secondly network drivers. The actual Windows kernel doesn’t crash as much as people expect. Now IE 7 is terribly insecure, which is why I stick with Firefox 3 + Adblock Plus.

I agree that sticking a GUI on a *nix core is stable but I’d rather dual boot Ubuntu or the “flavor of the month” Linux on a machine I built for much cheaper than buy a Mac.

Now another reason given by folks is that Macs are easier to use. Personally I cannot see this argument, but hey it may be true for your grandma (mine doesn’t use computers in India) and parents (my parents are perfectly fine with XP/Vista) so let’s assume it’s true. Even if it is true they are NOT relying on the shell they are relying on the GUI. You might as well get a cheaper box and load in your “flavor of the month” Linux with a half-way decent GUI (Ubuntu gets my vote), set up Firefox, set up Open Office (FWIW I love Office 12), and let your parents/grandparents/etc use it. It is secure (either because a) the *nix/BSD kernel is more secure than Windows NT or because b) there are more users of NT so the makers of virii don’t target BSD kernels – I prefer b but whatever), easy to use, and CHEAP.

So while it may not be a POS (and frankly I’ve used the Macbooks and I can agree that they do look sexy and they are great) but they are definitely not worth it in my eyes. But each to its own.

For the record: pineapple >>>> mangoes >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> oranges >>> apples >>>>>> everything else

In other words, Go Bears!

by royrules22 on Nov 25, 2008 12:42 AM PST up reply actions

Totally fair.

Yep, you’re right about the cost/price. I think Macs are only really worth it for the laptops, especially in the new incarnations. The quality is definitely what you pay for, and if you don’t need the extra high quality or “fashion” then don’t pay for it. Still, they’re definitely not pieces of shit ;) They’re just priced higher for good reason. Whether you can afford what they offer is up to you.

Like you say, it’s all about your preference. Personally I like OS X and the ability to run Windows and Linux and OSX all on the same machine. It’s pretty sweet. Plus the new MacBook Pro’s have some awesome graphics; Nvidia 9600GT chip, not too shabby.

Regarding upgrades, Macs have been hard to upgrade in the past, but not so much anymore. Not any different from most laptops or desktops. You can upgrade your own RAM very easily (I did in my new MBP) and hard disk even easier (also done).

Basically, they’re just not as bad as you think. The only difference is price, and if you’re willing to pay a little more for whatever the Mac might give for the price, then that’s up to you. I think it’s worth it for laptops, not for desktops, but everyone thinks different. Whatever :) Thanks for the intelligent reply.

by trisweb on Nov 25, 2008 5:35 PM PST up reply actions

Whoa

Trisweb,

Whoa, how did this conversation get started?

First off, regarding torrent fear mongering… You’re right, i am overly cautious, but that’s a GOOD thing. You’re a programmer, I’m surprised at how caviler you are.

Torrents are generally safe, especially video and audio files. Not that harmful

I think saying media files through torrents are ‘generally safe’ is not accurate. Even if the files do not contain viruses or spyware (some do), ALL media files you get from torrents are inherently dangerous because you’re broadcasting a ton of information (including your IP address, ISP, OS, Browser, POP and open port#) and it’s being tracked by ALL the media companies, FBI, NSA, RIAA, the Chinese gov, Yemen intelligence (i know, it’s weird) and many hackers…. the ability to track this information is native in the torrent client itself. UNLESS – you’re running Peerguardian. Plus packet analysis is going on at the ISP level.

As for the Mac/PC… I have an opinion on this because I’ve owned both for many years. I’ve had 4 macs (starting from the LC2 → iMacG4) and many other PCs that I’ve built myself.

The idea of putting a nice graphical interface on top of a secure and stable Unix core is just plain correct, and I cannot tell you how wrong Windows’ architecture is in comparison.

Nobody is questioning this… the OSX family is great (leopard is awesome)… but it’s not the OS that I have a problem with… it’s the software that’s made for Macs… its clunky and resource intensive. Software made for PCs are reworked over and over again and made continually more elegant… because of the lack of competition in the Mac world, you usually get less refined software… when you compare MIPS/dollar for most applications… PC platform wins even in the common CoreDuo standard. And the greatest reason you want the PC is CHOICE… there’s just more choice out there and the number of free options is greater in the PC world.

On top of that their hardware is just excessively high quality. It just works. It’s good shit. You get what you pay for.

The hardware is great. Everyone remarks how cool my iMac looks. But it has it’s problems and I only can use it as a music server. First off, its EXPENSIVE for the same internal crap… Infineon/Fujistu/Micron memory, Seagate/Samsung HDs, Foxcon mobos, Nvidia chipsets… the same as Dells, but you get charged more for the design….Plus the hardware’s lifespan is reduced b/c the Mac form factors create more heat and trap more dust… they look cool, but a HD in a Mac will fail sooner than one in a PC.

Bottomline: Macs are great for certain people… and their laptops are great. But for tech saavy users that can deal with XP’s problems and security threats, the PC platform is cheaper, faster-per-dollar and lasts longer. I will admit however, that the resale value for Macs are MUCH greater. Plus you can do more ‘things’ with a PC because the software available is much greater.

BTW: I like Zen alot… it’s streamlined, slick, fast and clean. I don’t run Wordpress or MySQL on any of my own websites, but was able to check it out on your blog…. very clean.

Seems like there are a ton of leeches at 90.1% that can’t get any further! Seed seed seed! Don’t cancel once you’re done downloading! Thank you.

Maybe the original uploader can keep seeding so I can finish, then I promise to seed for at least 48 hours. Thanks.

Well there’s one seed now that’s complete, hopefully that’ll work. I’ll keep seeding for everyone, please do the same. Cool.

how much seeding is polite after one finishes?

by Rocksanddirt on Nov 25, 2008 3:21 PM PST up reply actions

At least get your ratio up to 1 (ie seed as much as you download)

However I go by this rule:

public torrents I don’t care much about – ~.75 ratio
invite only torrents – ~1-1.25 ratio
Torrents for which you want to be a good citizen (i.e. Cal games) – ratio of 2+

In other words, Go Bears!

by royrules22 on Nov 25, 2008 5:22 PM PST up reply actions

Nice :) Good rules of thumb. I wish I had more uplink bandwidth, ‘cause seeding fairly is going to take forever at this rate… but seems like it’s seeded well now so no problem there.
