DBD 11.14.08 Bak Bak Fun Facts

Well, now that our favorite Sudanese b-ball player, Bak Bak, is safely in the fold, we can have the first in what I can only assume is a continuing series:  Bak Bak Fun Facts.

1.  Bak Bak has an irrational fear of ventruiliquism and ventruiliquist dummies.

2.  Bak Bak was originally named Reginald Val Johnson when born, but went with Bak Bak instead.  He always hated Family Matters!

3.  Bak Bak currently hold the world record for longest Crocodile Mile.  He lined up like 40 of those and just kept going and going and going and going.

4.  Not to be outdone, Bak Bak started the Bak Bak and Belinda Gates organization to help people in Africa.  Take that, Steven Colbert.  Also taking that, Bill Gates.

5.  Bak Bak is fluent in Gujerati.

6.  James Cameron originally wanted Bak Bak for the lead, but Bak said "Hey, why not try that DiCaprio kid.  There's something about him."

7.  Bak Bak later regretted that.

8.  Bak Bak is the father of NeNe from the Real Housewives of Atlanta (I hate myself for knowing what that means).

So, that's a good start.  Let's learn more about Bak Bak!

Womens soccer to take on Florida in NCAAs:

Bears Earn NCAA Tournament Selection
The California women's soccer team received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament's 64-team field. The Golden Bears (10-8-1 overall, 3-5-1 Pac-10) will take on No. 7 Florida (17-3-1, 11-0 SEC) in the first round of the tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. EST at the Gators' James G. Pressly Stadium. The winner of the Cal-Florida game will face the winner of the Miami (10-8-3, 3-5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) vs. Central Florida (13-5-3, 7-2-2 Conference USA) first-round match on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. EST in the same venue. Miami and UCF play each other Friday at 6:30 p.m. EST.

Bears' NCAA History
This year's selection is Cal's 16th playoff bid, the 10th in the last 11 years and the fifth straight. Cal advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2007. The Bears defeated Santa Clara, 2-0, in the first round. Cal tied Stanford, 1-1, in the second round, but the Cardinal advanced to the third round by winning the penalty kick shootout, 7-6. In 2005, Cal advanced to the third round of NCAAs for the first time since 1988. The Bears' best NCAA Tournament performances were semifinal appearances in 1984, '87 and '88.

Ashley Walker gets a major accolade from ESPN:

BERKELEY - ESPN.com, in a list of the top five women's basketball players at each position, declared California Golden Bear senior Ashley Walker to be the best power forward in the nation. The list was voted on by a panel of ESPN.com contributors. "She [Ashley Walker] plays with the aggressive mentality of thinking she has something to prove," wrote Mechelle Voepel in her explanation of what makes Walker the nation's best power forward. "She has been the steady presence as Cal has risen in the national rankings."

Junior Alexis Gray-Lawson was among the top five two-guards. Epiphanny Price of Rutgers, whom the Bears will play against on Friday, Nov. 21 at Haas Pavilion, was named the top at the position. Only the top player at each position was announced with No.s 2-5 being listed alphabetically. Senior Devanei Hampton was among other forwards receiving votes.

Cal was one of eight schools to have two or more players ranked in the top five for their positions. Rutgers, Oklahoma, whom the Bears play on Dec. 13 in San Jose, and Stanford also had more than one player make the list. The Bears open their regular season on Friday, Nov. 14 when they host Albany at 1p.m. at Haas Pavilion.

More women's swimming recruits:

BERKELEY - Four high school swimming standouts - Mary Beck, Laura Evans, Caitlin Leverenz and Samantha Pearson - plus high school divers Rachel Becker and Kelsey Heiken have signed National Letters of Intent to join the University of California women's swimming and diving program for the 2009-10 season, Golden Bear head coach Teri McKeever announced Thursday. Beck, who will join the Bears in January of 2009, signed a Financial Aid Agreement.

"I can't stress enough how fantastic these student-athletes are," said McKeever. "They fit in perfectly with out team philosophy, and will provide immediate impact to our program."

Beck, who hails from Austin, Texas, is widely considered as one of the top backstroke and individual medley prospects in the country. She owns the national high school record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.45 and holds the public high school standard with a 53.03 in the 100-yard backstroke. Beck scored 29 points, the highest among female swimmers, and helped the United States to a second-place finish at the 2007 Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii. She collected two gold medals and one silver medal, and established Junior Pan Pac meet records in the 200 IM (2:16.72) and 400 IM (4:46.30).

Ashley Walker gets ANOTHER accolade:

BERKELEY - Members of the Pac-10 Conference's media, as an extension of the preseason poll, voted a five-member preseason All-Pac-10 team. Senior forward Ashley Walker was a unanimous pick, receiving a vote on all 14 ballots. Fellow Bears' post Devanei Hampton was also among the five players named.

The preseason All-Pac-10 honors are the latest in a growing list of honors for the pair of senior fowards. Walker, a two-time All-American and first-team All-Pac-10 player, was named a first-team preseason All-American by the Sporting News and an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press. She is also on the Wooden Award Preseason Top 30 list and the State Farm/Wade Trophy Watch List and was just named the top power forward in the country by ESPN.com. Hampton, a two-time All-American and three-time All-Pac-10 honoree was named preseason third-team All-American by The Sporting News. She is also on the Wooden Award Preseason Top 30 list and the State Farm/Wade Trophy Watch List.

The Bears were picked second in the media poll, duplicating their finish in the Pac-10 coaches' poll. The Bears open their regular season on Friday, Nov. 14 when they host Albany at 1p.m. at Haas Pavilion.

God, the media STILL thinks Stanford is way better.  This year is the year to change people's minds on that!!!!

Okanes says team is getting healthier.  Finally!

Not too much to report off practice tonight. The team is getting pretty healthy these days so there isn’t much info on the way of injuries. Right guard Noris Malele practiced for the second straight day. That’s better than last week, when he only practiced on Thursday. Still, coach Jeff Tedford said it would be a game-time decision. Safeties Marcus Ezeff, Bernard Hicks and Sean Cattouse all practiced fully.

One fairly significant development: Jahvid Best returned kicks for the first time in weeks. After practice, Tedford said Best “probably” would return kicks against Oregon State. Best was one of the top kick returners in the country before suffering a dislocated left elbow against Colorado State on Sept. 27. He only missed one game but gave up his kick return duties to Jeremy Ross. Tedford said Best’s elbow is healed enough that he can return to that role. He said the elbow, not the sprained foot, was what was preventing Best from returning kicks.

Faraudo (new b-ball beat writer for CoCoTimes) on Monty:

Bob Thomason has a pretty good idea what to expect from the atmosphere at Haas Pavilion on Saturday evening when his Pacific Tigers visit in Cal coach Mike Montgomery’s debut.

“The emotion of him being the new coach in his first regular-season game will be a tough environment for us to play in,” said Thompson, beginning his 21st season as coach at his Stockton alma mater. “I hope we can quiet it down a little.”

Thomason faced Montgomery’s Stanford teams twice and expects little will be different now.

“I have a lot of respect for Mike. I think he’s one of the better coaches in the country,” Thomason said. “I love watching his teams play — not when I’m preparing to play him. He gets his guys to play aggressively, and I like the way he runs his stuff. He’ll have his guys well-prepared.”

That’s been Thomason’s trademark, too. He is the winningest coach in UOP history, he directed the program to NCAA tournament appearances in 2004, ‘05 and ‘06, and his Tigers were 21-10 last year.

So, there you go.  Do you know any Bak Bak fun facts?

The opinions expressed in a FanPost are, in every way, reflective of the opinions of every California Golden Blogs Marshawnthusiast. Moreover, they are reflective of every employee of SBNation, including Tyler "Blez" Bleszinski.

Q+A with OSU D player Victor Butler:

Victor Butler is a senior defensive end on the Oregon State football team.

He finished the 2007 season with 101/2 sacks, third in the Pacific-10 Conference.

Butler leads the Beavers with 121/2 tackles for loss and is second on the team with 41/2 sacks.

He wears the name Strong-Butler on his jersey to honor his father, Elvester.

Q: Where did you grow up?

A: I grew up in Rialto, California (and) Pasadena, back and forth. My father had a house in Pasadena and my mother had a house in Rialto and we just kind of settled on Rialto. That’s where I ended up doing most of my schooling at.

Q: What did you enjoy doing during those years?

A: Everything was sports for my family, but it wasn’t just football and basketball. I ran track, volleyball, soccer, baseball, whatever you could name, we played it. I guess to keep us out of trouble, keep us busy and it kept our grades up because all of our coaches required at least As and Bs to play, so I think that was a great thing to shape me as an individual and as a human being coming up, focusing on my grades and on my athleticism.

Q+A with corner back Keenan Lewis:

What are your goals in life once football is over for you?

I plan on going to back to my hometown of New Orleans and coaching football at my high school (O. Perry High) once everything is done.

What hobbies keep you busy between practices?

Hobbies right now are playing the PlayStation 3 NCAA, Madden and hanging out with some of the teammates around the house.

What is your favorite type of music?

Lil Wayne is my favorite rapper.

Article on coin toss mechanics:

If Oregon State wins the coin toss to start the game against California Saturday, there’s a better than 50-50 chance the Beavers are going to defer the decision to the second half.

It’s a common practice by OSU coach Mike Riley, and games around the country frequently start with the decision to defer.

Why give up a chance to score right away?

For Riley, there are three main reasons. Number one is simply that Riley likes getting the ball to start the second half.

"Number two is I think we have a good defense and I like to be able to kick it and play good defense and get good field position right out," Riley said. "And number three is and it might be 2A is weather. Wind, in particular. I’d like to be able to go with the wind right off the bat. And usually if you defer, they have to take the ball so you get to pick the end."

DONT READ THIS ARTICLE
:

The game didn’t work out quite the way he expected the last time Kevin Riley faced Oregon State as the University of California’s quarterback.

The Golden Bears entered the game as the No. 2-ranked team in the nation and were expected to roll past the Beavers in Berkeley. The Beavers, however, played well enough to hold a 31-28 lead as the clock wound down.

Riley, who was handed his first career start just minutes before kickoff, had been hot all day and was apparently leading the Golden Bears to the game-winning score or at least a field goal to tie.

That’s when it all unraveled.

I told you not to read it!

I'd love to see Jahvid return kickoffs

Ross has done a good job in place of Jahvid, but Best can fly and has given us great field position nearly every return (much in the same vein as Leon Wasington). Maybe Ross will just hurdle defenders to cause confusion while Jahvid runs right by. This would be my dream scenario.

I think this will help Cal a lot. Improved field position is a struggling offense’s best remedy. Though, we had plenty of short fields against SC too.

Interesting comment over at BtD about Riley:

I remember him in high school- Riley was a freak. He would run over anyone that tried to stop him. He probably had the same confidence when his instincts took over. Do I think he honestly thought he could beat 4 DLineman, 2 LBs and a stack of DBs from 12-15 yards out? No, I don’t. But his instincts, the same ones that took over when he was growing up dominating Oregon football players, took over and said "RUN!" He won’t make the same mistake again, I’m sure of it

I had thought that when it happened. That he was probably always fast and was used to just running over or getting past linemen whenever he needed to — it’s kind of his go-to panic move. This makes sense with his history.

Hope is dangerous, but Glory is addictive.

If we won that OSU game, how would the rest of Cal’s season gone? Would Tedford been more likely to jump to Riley? Maybe, but I doubt it. We would have had 1 more win. Gone to the Emerald Bowl? People would have been even more INSANELY ANGRY, bc Riley had won.

Cal’s offense is inconsistent:

Everyone involved with Cal’s offense has offered to take some of the blame for the unit’s current down tick.

Coach Jeff Tedford and offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti tried to claim responsibility, and quarterback Kevin Riley said he’s missing open receivers. Tailback Jahvid Best thinks he’s failed to recognize obvious cutback lanes, Nyan Boateng mentioned the receivers’ faulty timing and left guard Mark Boskovich admitted that the young offensive line is still learning.

They all make valid arguments.

“That’s the frustrating thing when you look at our offense right now: We’re having a breakdown with one person here and a different person there,” Cignetti said. "Whether it’s a running play, whether it’s pass protection or whether it’s a throw, one out of 11 is causing a lack of success on a given play.

“It takes all 11 guys functioning as one unit to have great execution, and we’re not always getting that.”

Cal hopes not to be surprised by Rodgers like they were with Antolin:

“I think he’s very similar to (Antolin),” Johnson said. “He’s got more experience. He’s played more games. He reads things a little better. We’re just going to have to be prepared for anything.”

The Bears admitted they didn’t know much about Antolin before they saw him in person. They have more than enough tape to get down Rodgers tendencies — not that that has helped many other opponents this season.

“You can prepare for him all you want, you still have to stop him,” Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. “You still have to tackle the guy.”

The Beavers also have a way of making an opponent pay for focusing too much on Rodgers.

With receivers Sammie Stroughter, James Rodgers (Jacquizz’s brother) and Shane Morales — each of whom ranks in the conference’s top-10 in receptions and receiving yards per game — OSU leads the Pac-10 in passing (255.7 ypg). Morales is questionable this weekend with a hip injury.

“That’s why they have the No. 1 passing offense in the Pac-10, because everyone is focused on (Rodgers),” Follett said. “It’s going to be a tough job. They have a real balanced offense. They’ve been doing a real good job using all of their weapons on offense.”

I’m not sure where they were…but Fowler, Corso, and Herbstreit went to Kenny Mayne + someone else who was broadcasting live from The Breader’s Cup. Cal student turns vigilante to recover stolen laptop

In what police called a rare occurrence, a UC Berkeley student went from victim to vigilante this week after he chased and fought with four assailants who punched him and stole his computer.

Of the approximately 50 strong-arm robberies in Berkeley each month, the victims almost never fight back, police say.

But an 18-year-old Cal man did. And it’s something UC police say is not a good idea.

It all started Monday evening when the man was sitting on the steps of Doe Library on campus when four men approached him, punched him in the face and took his laptop computer.

The man followed his assailants and grabbed his laptop back. For that he was punched and kicked. He suffered minor injuries and was treated on the scene and went home with his property.

In addition to scrapping with the four men and recovering his laptop, he also hurried to an emergency campus phone and called police, who arrested two of them, an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old.

Good chance he gets squished, though.

We need someone who can hold onto the ball. No RBs with fumblities, please.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Pterodactyl for CB.

Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...

1. Jacquizz vs. the Cal LBs: California might have the second-best crew of linebackers in the nation behind USC, which is the singular explanation for why the Bears adopted a 3-4 defense during the offseason. They lead a defense that is fourth in the Pac-10 vs. the run (117 yards per game). Oregon State freshman tailback Jacquizz Rodgers has six 100-yard games in eight starts. His ability to hide behind his line, read the creases and then explode is uncanny. Limiting Rodgers is priority No. 1 for the Bears.
4. Cal’s offense would like some home cooking from Kevin Riley: As noted by the San Francisco Chronicle, from the first three games to the past six, California’s offensive production has dropped by more than 150 yards and 18 points a game. Is it a coincidence that Kevin Riley started each of those three games but only three of the past six? Perhaps. Well, Jeff Tedford handed the offense to Riley on Tuesday, and the Beaverton (Ore.) High School product can make a statement in Beaver-Town against Oregon State.
9. How will Lyle Moevao’s shoulder hold up? The pained tone of Oregon State coach Mike Riley’s voice early in the week suggested that his quarterback wouldn’t be ready to start against California and that backup Sean Canfield would again get the call. But Moevao made progress by midweek and Riley said Thursday night that Moevao will start. So will the Beavers get the vintage, swashbuckling Moevao who looked like an All-Pac-10 quarterback? Or will they get a guy who’s playing with a bum shoulder? And if it’s the latter, will Canfield need to save the day?

I actually think I’m more excited about Moeavofknmijfniajmd than Canfield.

The Maharg makes me look like an idiot.

A healthy Moafwah is clearly better than Canfield. But an injured Moaweghoawiehg? We’ll see.

On an unrelated Basketball note:

I watched UCLA squeak by Miami(OH) yesterday, and I wasn’t very impressed. Very soft inside… Leon Powe would drop a 30-20 on these dudes in a heartbeat. I don’t think they’re Final Four material at all… but I could be wrong (maybe?)

...nuh nuh nuh gone

by Thoroughbred on Nov 14, 2008 12:57 PM PST reply actions

I didn’t see that. Miami had the lead with 54 seconds to go. That said, it’s really early and they’re playing a lot of freshmen.

At least we didn’t say anything about a silky-smooth penetration to the hole…
