so your QB was running out of time and rather than spike it or throw it away to stop the clock he scrambled for less than a 1st down and time expired and the other team won. Shades of Wayne Cook in the Rose Bowl back in ‘94. What happens to these kids? A total vapor lock in the waning seconds of the game? I can’t imagine it’s Jeff Tedford’s fault – is Riley just not so bright in the clutch?

If by "cut him some slack," you mean "never forgiven him," then yes.
OK, I’ve mostly forgiven him. For me, that was one of Cal football’s most heart-rending moments. I just felt so sorry for Riley. Watching it live, I wanted him to never play football again—and I bet a lot of Cal fans thought the same—but I knew his enormous error was almost excusable. He was brand new, at an away game, playing for the first time in college.

We all have to deal with our mistakes and personal demons. Some just happen in front of 60,000+ spectators.
Mine happen in front of about 1,500 people a day. So, I kinda of know what Riley is going through. Or went through.

Riley vs. OSU - one year later
Perhaps I’ve become totally delusional, but for some reason the whole thing just makes me laugh when I think about it. Not really a ha ha funny laugh, but a laugh anyway. I had Gold Zone tickets last year, and I distincly remember watching Riley looking for a receiver and then running right at me. As soon as he made the move forward I screamed ‘NO!!!’ a good two or three seconds before he was tackled and way before the rest of the crowd realized the impact of his decision, so I knew the horrible yells of pain followed by shocked silence were coming.
And for some twisted reason this is funny to me now. Clearly 15 years of Cal fandom has blackened my soul.
Did you yell NO and then have a shocked silence or was it 1 really long NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO all in slow motion and shit.
