Womens vball could sweep Stanford:

BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 7-ranked California volleyball team returns home to battle No. 2 Stanford in the second Big Spike with a chance to sweep its rival for the first time in 29 years. Earlier this season, the Golden Bears defeated the Cardinal at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. for the first time since a 3-1, Nov. 15, 1979 victory. Since the rivals last met, the teams have gone in opposite directions. Cal has had to brave injuries and weather the midseason lull to emerge with a 3-3 record while Stanford has reeled off six consecutive wins including 3-0 sweeps of its last four opponents. The Bears dealt Stanford its only Pac-10 loss of the season and looks to make it two when the teams clash again for Bay Area bragging rights.

THE FACTS: No. 7 Cal (20-4, 10-3 Pac-10) returns to Haas Pavilion for a three-match home stand which begins this week with No. 2 Stanford (21-3, 12-1 Pac-10) visiting Berkeley at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14. The Big Spike will be broadcast live by Comcast SportsNet-California with Roxy Bernstein calling the action and Krista Blunk providing color commentary. Live statistics and video are also available on the internet via Gametracker at www.CalBears.com

FREE FOR ALL: The remainder of Cal's home matches feature free admission for all youth 12th grade and below with valid student identification. The Bears play host to rival Stanford (Nov. 14) for the second Big Spike of the season before closing out home matches against UCLA (Nov. 21) and USC (Nov. 22). The match against the Women of Troy is Senior Night and will be broadcast live by Fox Sports Net.

Water Polo heads to LA:

Bear Bites

The No. 4-ranked Cal men's water polo team (15-6, 1-3), the defending 2006 and 2007 national champions, return to Southern California this weekend when the Golden Bears face No. 10-ranked Long Beach State (11-14, 0-5) Saturday, Nov. 15 at 12 p.m. and No. 9-ranked UC Irvine (9-11, 0-5) Sunday, Nov. 16 at 12 p.m. in a pair of MPSF conference matches. Last weekend Cal fell to No. 1-ranked USC, 11-9, in an MPSF conference match on Saturday, Nov. 8 in Los Angeles and defeated Pomona College, 19-3, in a non-conference match in Claremont, Calif. The Bears continued to utilize a balanced offensive attack against both USC and Pomona with seven different players scoring in the loss to the Trojans and 11 different players scoring in the victory over Pomona.

Cal Over the Weekend

Cal fell to top-ranked USC, 11-9, last Saturday. In a game of surges, the Trojans won out thanks to powerful first and third periods of play. USC took the early lead in the opening frame by scoring on two 6-on-5 advantages to take a 2-0 lead. The Bears would score next only to see USC add another power play goal. USC scored again with six seconds remaining in the first quarter to take a 4-1 lead. Cal cut into the deficit to open the second period, however. The Bears managed three goals in a minute's span to lock the game up 4-4. USC scored just before the shot clock expired to put the Trojans back on top 5-4. Cal would equalize the match again on a 6-on-5 score from Trent Calder at 2:56. USC added two more goals in the second quarter to take a 7-5 USC lead going into halftime. In the second half, USC pulled farther ahead as they opened the third quarter with two goals to take a 9-5 lead. Cal pushed a 6-on-5 score through at the 5:20 mark of the third period to make it 9-6. USC scored on two power plays to take its largest lead of the game at 11-6. To close down the game, Cal managed a goal with 20 seconds left in the third period and cashed in on two more 6-on-5 chances during the fourth period to make the final score 11-9. Against Pomona, freshman Cory Nasoff led Cal's balanced attack that saw 11 different players score with three goals. In addition to Nasoff's three goals, Calder, Spencer Warden, Ivan Rackov, Luka Saponjic, Charlie Steffens and Zach White added two goals apiece, while Scott Cruikshank, Daniel Orloff, Mike Sample and Brian Dudley notched one goal apiece.

Okanes on Pac10:

BERKELEY — Cal's 17-3 loss to USC on Saturday had significant implications, but the aftermath didn't have quite the same impact as each of the Bears' previous two visits to the Los Angeles Coliseum.

While Saturday's game once again had Pac-10 title ramifications, Cal didn't enter the night also playing for a Bowl Championship Series berth. Nor were the Bears the only other team in position to realistically capture the conference championship.

Perhaps that's why the Bears seem to be dealing with Saturday's defeat so healthily. To be sure, Cal's players are disappointed with the loss, especially because there were a handful of missed opportunities that possibly could have reversed the game's outcome. But the stakes weren't as high to begin with, so there also isn't a sense that every hope and dream for the 2008 season has been shattered.

"We're going to continue to play to the best of our ability and try to finish out the season with all wins," Cal fullback Will Ta'ufo'ou said. "Hopefully things work out in our favor."

Article on bowls:

BERKELEY — Although Cal's hopes of snapping a 50-year drought of playing in the Rose Bowl likely were dashed with Saturday's loss at USC, the Bears still are in a pretty good position to finish off a very good season, one that could have important implications for recruiting and next season.

The Bears have three games remaining, the final two at home against teams they will be favored against. That means Saturday's game at No. 23 Oregon State could be crucial in determining what the history books ultimately will say about this season.

"I think we can bounce back," Cal center Alex Mack said. "We're still a good team. We had so many opportunities (against USC) that we missed. If we would have made those plays, we could have won. Knowing that, we can go into (Saturday) trying to make those plays and really finish out the season right."

The Bears (6-3, 4-2 Pac-10) can clinch at least a tie for second place by winning their final three games. That would put Cal at 9-3 overall and likely around No. 20 in the national rankings at the end of the regular season. The Pac-10's second-place team goes to the Holiday Bowl against one of the top teams from the Big 12, which this year also will mean a team ranked high in the polls.

Tuesday night update:

The only real newsworthy development that came from today’s weekly press luncheon is that coach Jeff Tedford said Kevin Riley will start at quarterback. This is the first time since Riley was removed from the starting lineup following the Colorado State game that Tedford has definitively named the starter at the beginning of the week. He came close against Oregon when he said that Riley was the starter “as of right now.” Then, of course, Riley suffered a concussion against the Ducks so it was up in the air last week.

When asked why he was able to name the starter at the beginning of the week, Tedford said the reason he couldn’t do it last week was because Riley had a concussion. That implies that Riley would likely have been the man again had he stayed healthy. So when you think about it, Riley really has been the team’s starting quarterbackthe past three weeks.

There was a lot of talk today about Riley’s performance last year against Oregon State. I’m sure it will be talked about a lot this week and Riley will have to answer a lot of questions about. But I took the opportunity to ask Tedford about Riley’s growth, not just since that game but all the ups and downs since. Obviously, it’s been an inconsistent season for him.

There you go.  Try not to get fired.  Dump away.   Go Bears!

Article on Moaevaoigfaoiga’s injury:

Two injured starters on the Oregon State football team are progressing in their recovery, but their status for Saturday’s game against California is uncertain this early in the week.

Quarterback Lyle Moevao plans to test his arm in practice, but it is still sore when he throws the deep ball. His shoulder was injured Nov. 1 against Arizona State, and he missed last Saturday’s game at UCLA.

A decision by coach Mike Riley as to whom the starter will be between Moevao and Sean Canfield will happen later this week, and could be a game-time decision.

"Sean will be ready, and Lyle is getting closer," Riley said Tuesday. "(Monday, quarterback coach) Danny Langsdorf asked him where he was percentage-wise and he thought 80 percent. Knowing Lyle, that means 60 or 70 percent. I do think he’s getting close to ready to go."

Moevao said he’s really about 70 percent, but believes he’ll be able to play. It’s just a matter of how much pain he can take when he throws deep.

He practiced Tuesday, sharing time on the first string with Canfield. Moevao’s passes didn’t have the usual zip and the ball fluttered at times.<

/blockquote>

Article on Canfield:

There’s still no quarterback controversy at Oregon State.

There is, however, a quarterback quandary.

Once again, a hurt shoulder has forced one starter to the sideline and given another the chance to thrive.

While Sean Canfield’s injury forced him out of his starting spot for the final few games last season and the first eight this year, Canfield stepped in when Lyle Moevao fell on his shoulder during the Arizona State game and led the Beavers to a 27-25 win over the Sun Devils.

Last week, Canfield started his first game since suffering an injury to his left shoulder in a loss to Southern California in the ninth game of the 2007 season.

Although he saw significant minutes in the Emerald Bowl, offseason surgery kept him on the shelf throughout the spring and fall and limited him to minor mop-up duty until Nov. 1.

"It’s been awesome," Canfield said. "It’s finally come to the point where I can show what I can do."

Canfield said his shoulder didn’t feel right until the week of the Washington State game. With the exception of a few underthrown deep balls, his arm looks live enough to stretch the field.

Canfield has done just that in the past two games. He completed 19 of 28 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns against the Sun Devils.

He followed that up by throwing for 222 yards and two touchdowns against the Bruins. He completed 16 of 22 passes in the game.

"He’s brought a lot to the table," OSU guard Gregg Peat said. "He stepped up big in the last game and he threw some awesome balls, I mean they were just perfect."

It hasn’t gone off without a hitch or two. There was the interception and 41-yard touchdown return by Troy Nolan against ASU, a pick at the UCLA goal line and an untimely fumble to stop potential OSU scoring drives last Saturday.

Avoiding meltdowns is a key for Canfield.

Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.

Boateng speaks out on the quarterback issue

Also from Okanes:

Wide receiver Nyan Boateng was at the press luncheon today and was very candid about his disappointment with the progression of the team’s passing game. He acknowledged that having such an inexperienced group of receviers was a big reason for the team’s lack of production through the air. He also said he feels like the team would be better off if it just picked one quarterback and stuck with him.

"It’s been real frustrating but that’s what happens when you have new starters and you graduate all your receivers," Boateng said. "It takes a little bit of time. I didn’t think it was going to go this far into the season, but I think we learned a lot from this game and I think we’re going to build on it."

Boateng said at first he didn’t think the rotating of quarterbacks was a big deal, but he said it was tough to make the adjusment from one to the other, as demonstrated by the second half of Saturday’s game against USC.

"At first, as a receiving corps, we felt like it didn’t matter who was in there, but in the middle of a game when you switch quarterbacks like that, the timing gets thrown off a little bit. I think we need to just have one guy and stick with it."

I have no problem with his thoughts

Although to be fair, when they did stick with Riley he wasn’t doing well from a completion percentage standpoint, and then he went and got himself concussed when he got the job back. Circumstances, eh?

I mean Tedford would LOVE to stick with 1 QB. He’s not sitting there going “I can’t wait to just screw over my receiving corps by changing QBs mid-game!” Unfortunately, neither QB is putting him in a position where he can do that.

Please disregard the above ramblings as those of a clearly delusional fan.

Boateng reveals something interesting:
“After the game I stayed out there and talked to a bunch of guys from SC and they felt like we were the better team that day,” Boateng said. “They said some things I can’t talk about but they felt like we were better.”

“I told that to guys in the locker room and that gave us a lot of confidence,” he added. “That game was big for us. Even though we lost it’s a positive because it’s going to help us down the stretch. Now we now how to handle those tough teams and those type of games.”

as flattering as that is

i dont see how that makes any sense, at least from a statistical standpoint. although our D was good in that game, SC’s D was lockdown. and while neither offense really shined, they definitely did better on that side of the ball as well too.

interesting statement nonetheless, but i don’t get it.

maybe we could argue the defense is better at this stuff this year

but the offense just had too many weird things happen:

-o-line injuries
-starting QBs sharing snaps
-inexperienced WRs

I think the last 2 items are starting to improve…the O-line might be a wait-until-next-year kind of thing

Matt Holliday trade official

Greg Smith, CarGon, and Street are going to the Rox.

AN is absolutely blowing up over this. It’s the biggest thing since the bash brothers (maybe? too far?).

It would be interesting to see how this progresses. I could see Beane pushing for a pre-season extenstion. Holliday’s agent is show-me-the-money Boras who doesn’t do pre-season extensions very often (if at all). Beane might see what he can get for Holliday…or Holliday could suck in Oakland with a crappy offense and a crappy ballpark and become more affordable after the season. If he does suck, the A’s might not want to pay big bucks for someone who would be turning 30 by 2010.

People who say baseball is boring

clearly never played (if they did, they were that kid stuck in RF) and it’s pretty clear (to me) that they lack any level of sophistication.

Rishi, enjoy watching your 49ers. Now that is some exciting shit!

I played baseball. No glamour position – just first base. I really don’t enjoy a season that lasts 150+ games or a sport that drags on and on and on.

I remember watching the World Series this year for a couple minutes. Then I got bored and switched to Penn State-OSU.

Besides, how can you say the Niners-Cardinals game on Monday wasn’t more exciting than any baseball game?

I don’t terribly enjoy actually watching baseball either, but I love fantasy baseball. I love me some statistics.

The 49er game on Monday is exciting if you care about ONE real shitty team

and another Arizona team that is “good” because they get to feast on the likes of the other teams in the NFC West.

Baseball season may be too long, but I look at it as something to keep me busy/entertained for the better part of 1/2 of the year. Plus, it’s a good excuse to indulge in some alcoholic beverages.

Yes, that Holliday trade is big. But heres something huge. MORE BRUNO INFO:

Cohen turned to a couple of pros for a sex scene in his forthcoming “Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Male,” in which he plays a flamboyant Austrian fashion journalist.

Looking for actors who were willing to do full-frontal nudity, Cohen and director Dan Mazer called on David Forest, the go-to guy for gay adult stars.

“We auditioned about 10 actors,” says Forest. They finally settled on triple-X stars Paul Barba (usually billed as “Tony Capucci”) and John Martel (known to fans as “Tyler Saint”). Cohen summoned Barba and Martel to the Aramano Hotel in Burbank.

“There’s a scene where Bruno comes to the hotel with some guys,” Forest tells us. “They’re all trying to get Bruno to come upstairs for an orgy. Five guys are there. Two of them are my guys. Bruno apparently doesn’t want to join the party, but he watches through the window. I’m told it’s hilarious.”

UCSF researcher tries to poison colleague

this is crazy.

A postdoctoral researcher in the UCSF urology department has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly admitting that he twice tried to poison a colleague by putting laboratory chemicals in her drinking water, authorities said Tuesday.

The bizarre scheme ended when researcher Benchun Liu, 38, allegedly told the colleague, lab technician and research assistant Mei Cao, that he had tried to kill her, police said.

Another quote from the article
He told investigators that in both attempted poisonings, he had used a buffer agent designed to control acid in lab solutions, Berlin said.

The agent turns water blue, but Cao drank it anyway, Berlin said.

“It was discolored – she noticed it,” Berlin said. “She did swallow some of the contents. She claimed to have no reaction, but that is short term. We don’t know what the long-term impact will be on her body.”

I would assume he’d at least try to use something that doesn’t obviously change the appearance of the liquid. And what kind of person drinks a strangely discolored liquid when she works in a lab?! This all reminds me of that little rhyme from chemistry : “Johnny was a thirsty lad, but he will drink no more, for what he thought was H20 was H2SO4”

When Coomassie Brilliant Blue G-250 binds to proteins in acid solution, it has an absorbance shift from 465 nm to 595 nm.

It’s a common reagent in biochemical labs…plus I don’t think biochemists can get their hands on real crazy chemicals. I don’t think it’s that toxic (since it didn’t kill her). Crazy nonetheless. I wonder if you could see if she fluoresces now?

Ryan Anderson, Nets
Anderson is proving to be an excellent pick by the Nets, who were torn between him and Courtney Lee on draft night. from Wilner’s blog:

The Bears are focused on big men and are expected to sign at least three players, their top prospect being Bak Bak, a power forward from Sun Valley who was named honorable-mention Best in the West. (He’s originally from the Sudan.)

The Bears also have commitments from guard Brandon Smith of Concord and forward Markuri Sanders-Frison, a JC transfer from Texas, according to scout.com

(Sanders-Frison might be Montgomery’s first-ever junior college recruit; I’m not sure about his Montana years.)

I actually kinda like them...

I don’t like that it doesn’t have much green though.

Nike guys get together with the some of the players every 3 years or so, and they redesign them. I don’t really mind it much. Some will be better than others, but in all honesty – Oregon hasn’t had the best looking uniforms over the years, but I think this is one of the more solid ones they’ve had. This isn’t the last change. There is a rumor we’ll be wearing black lids with these too.

There isn’t a great way to really know how these will look, until they are out on the field. A lot of people were complaining about our white helmets prior to them actually being introduced – and when Oregon took the field with their all-white “storm trooper” outfits (The same that they wore against Cal), it actually looked really good.

Only a few years ago, so few people blogged that being a blogosphere celebrity required little more than showing up. Now it takes hard work. And vitriol. "Today the blogosphere is so charged, so polarised, and so filled with haters hating that it’s simply not worth it," Mr Calacanis lamented.

The rest of the world may well have missed the unfolding of his tragedy. Behind it, however, is a bigger trend. Blogging has entered the mainstream, which—as with every new medium in history—looks to its pioneers suspiciously like death.

I like blogging...but I think it's a little creepy we're all (or some of us) are afraid of our identities.

I realize some of us already know each other…but not everyone.

AN has “AN Day” at an A’s Game where bloggers get together and you know…meet face-to-face.

Would CGB willing to plan a CGB Day for next year? That would be fun!

CB Steve Williams decommits from Oklahomo, favors Cal

HT to BI
:

Just found this on ESPN’s college football recruiting page.

"Under Armour All-American cornerback Steve Williams has decommitted from the Sooners and could join California’s Class of 2009, ESPN affiliate Web site OUInsider.com reports.

When asked if he was a solid pledge, Williams responded, “I don’t want to lie to you guys, but I don’t think so. I think I am going to go to California and I am going to decommit from Oklahoma.”

He continued, “It is not really about Oklahoma it is just that I like California better. I just don’t see myself as an Oklahoma Sooner as far as the system of playing cornerback. It is nothing against Oklahoma because it is a real good system, but I just want to play somewhere else.”

Click here for the ESPN report.

by Rishi on Nov 12, 2008 3:27 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yes, they are not aware.

since most of them don’t read anything but the sports page. and that not very closely.

If you want to play on Sunday, Cal is at least as good as any school, but maybe $c for that preparation.

by Rocksanddirt on Nov 12, 2008 5:01 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Except everywhere, they refer to it as UC Berkeley.

by Rishi on Nov 13, 2008 8:35 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wrong.

I’ve heard:

Cal
California
Berkeley
Cal Berkeley
UC
UC Berkeley
UCB
University of California
University of California, Berkeley
University of Berkeley (sic)

People often don’t know that all of them are the same place, and instead think that there are two or three different schools, though they might not know where.

I think some confusion stems from the system of private and public school naming we have here.

For example:

UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, UC Los Angeles, UC San Diego

It’s pretty easy to see that those places are all connected. It’s easy to see that they are a state system when you know what “UC” means.

Now we have:

University of San Francisco, University of Southern California, University of San Diego

All private schools that are in no way connected to the state. Where’s the University of Berkeley? “Oh, that must be what people refer to when they say ‘Berkeley’”

When you see NCAA sports on TV, they don’t refer to us as “UC Berkeley” or “UCB”. We’re “California” or “Cal”.

It's seriously too bad that there's no building or complex around that might have a large supply of sports drinks.

Keep in mind OU is one of the biggest, baddest football programs around. They’ve been good for a long time.

I think this is a small, but important step in the right direction for this program.
