A Case for using more of Tracy
What’s wrong with our offense? Mainly connections between QB and WRs. But our second biggest problem is a consistent run game… we either get 12 yards or NOTHING. That’s not going to win games… what wins games is getting 4yrds time and time again.
Jahvid Best – Explosive and big playmaker, but lacks balance and short yardage power.
Shane Vereen - Footwork is excellent and finds seams in the line for extra yardage, but lacks driving power in legs.
SOLUTION: Use more two RB sets with Tracy and use him during short yardage situations. I’m not saying bench Best or Vereen (of course not!) but I’m just asking to see more of Tracy to get consistent short yardage.
Tracy has:
1) Balance – he has terrific balance, like Lynch can twist and turn for an extra 2 yards
2) Power in the legs – his legs keep driving
3) Tough – Can take hits and keeps on driving forward
4) Lateral Movement – he can sidestep as well as Shane
5) Footwork – He has great footwork in traffic which allows him to change direction or stop on a dime.
Give him a chance. Our offense will be better for it.

interesting...
I wonder…if you give each RB 10 carries…
who has the best YPC?
I love Best…it almost seems like he’s out-of-control because he’s so damn fast so hits cause him to lose his balance. With T-Slo (better than using the last 3 letters of his last name!) it seems as if he, like you said, has balance and power.
I’d like to see more Best touches in non-running back situations…
and more of a rotation between Vereen and Slocum.
Perhaps this is a conversation from next year…we could use all the continuity possible on O…

I don’t think Best lacks balance… I’d rate them all about the same in that category from what we’ve seen. It’s tough to compare anybody to Lynch.
I do agree that- most of the time- he lacks short yardage power. I hope he lifts like Forsett. He got considerably more powerful in a hurry.

He does lack balance
From what I see, he trips alot… and gets tackled by someone reaching out and grabing his ankle. Sometimes when he’s blindsided, he’ll go down. Vereen seems to have a bit more.. when he knows he’s going down, he’ll twist and tourqe his body to get an extra 1 or 2 yards.
I think Jahvid needs to learn some patience and to wait for holes to open up and then hit them at speed… plus he needs to wait for his blocks to form… he often runs into his blockers or into lineman at the LOS.
I love Best… he’s so exciting to watch… I’m just saying that with some coaching he can improve his balance.

I had the same thought after that game… Shane was getting worked and was tiring towards the end of the game when we needed to kill the clock. I really wanted to see Tracy or Guerts to get 3 yards per shot. Consistency has been our killer when trying to run out the clock. We need a power run game for when we’re in the lead.
BTW: Rishi, i reposted MSU, thanks for the FYI

Thanks for the MSU repost.
Teams that use two back sets typically use one power back and one speed back. With Vereen and Best, they’re both speed backs.

The Best run vs UCLA
… During the 30+ Best run vs UCLA we had both Best, Vereen and WillT out there… the defense was confused and didn’t know who to cover and WillT did his thing to spring Best.
I LOVED THAT PLAY. We should do that more often with Best/Tracy or Vereen/Tracy. We should have either Best of Vereen lined up as a WR, motion them, then hand off to Tracy with Best or Vereen blocking downfield.
In our standard I and PowerI formations everyone knows who the ball is going to so the gaps are stuffed…. with more than one RB on their field we can create confusion and then get it to Tracy for 3-4 power yards.

There needs to be more confusion and definitely way more counter plays than we ever seem to execute. I understand the purpose of running up the gut, but sometimes, you gotta run misdirections and counters. Use decoys. And get Slocum involved in the power running game.
As a sidenote, I’m glad JT tried to run Wild Bear formation, even though the snap failed.

He’s passable as far as I can see. All three of our backs weigh the same (198ish), with Best and Tracy having proportional bodies and Shane having skinny legs. As far as pass blocking, I’d say Jahvid is the best, but we haven’t seen much of Tracy. Shane has missed some key blocks in pass protection.
None of them are as good as Marshawn or Justin. Shane’s downfield blocking leaves something to be desired too.

I liked his style of play...seemed
like a valuable “3rd down back” in the NFL.
-could pick up the blitz
-successful on screens and passes in the flat
-has good speed and agility.

Danzig, you've been busy, so you probably missed it.
But I’m pretty sure we haven’t seen more Slocum because of this.
This probably sorted itself inhouse, but I’m pretty sure they curtailed him only to kickoff returns since the return game is so thin this season and they didn’t want to burn DeBoskie’s redshirt. We might see him in the last three games though.

I remember that, but I doubt riding a scooter with a bum license is reason enough to sit him out. He’s sitting because the coaches think Vereen/Best can get the short yardage… All I’m saying is to give Tracy a shot… he’s prob not that impressive in practice, but sometimes players really turn on during live action.

Not possible
Why would Tedford give Slocum a bunch of carries THREE DAYS after the scooter incident for Colorado State, when he wasn’t needed, then punish him by giving him ZERO carries when he was needed vs. Arizona State?

I’m not disagreeing with you, but all these videos were compiled during garbage time against pretty terrible teams and their second units. Any of Cal’s running backs would’ve looked good against them. It’s like using Longshore’s second half performances against CSU and Wazzu as a basis for evaluating who should be the starter.
I agree Slocum should get some reps because of the Best injuries though.

Ah, I see.. this footage was during garbage time and against weaker teams… but that’s not Tracy’s fault. I see things in Tracy’s style may be useful when we’re killing the clock… I just want to see JT give him a shot.

Really? Has it come to this? There is no reason for Slocum to get more touches than he’s getting. He’s the exact same size as Best/Vereen, and less explosive. He isn’t going to push the pile any more effectively than our current RB’s just because he had a couple of good rushes against Washington St. and CSU. I mean 20 yards on 7 carries against Wazzu’s 2nd team is impressive and all…
All I’m saying is he doesn’t add anything our current backs lack, and he obviously isn’t as talented (which is why he isn’t getting meaningful touches).

Has it come to this?
Huh? It’s not like I’m advocating firing everybody… I just want 3-5 more touches per game for Tracy or Geurts. Our offense is our weakness and part of that has to do with short yardage rushing… This isn’t controversial. I’m not asking for much here.
Based on what I’ve seen, we need to do something to fix the problem we have. Our short yardage rushing is inconsistent and unreliable… and with totally green WRs, and rotating QBs…our run game needs to be the strength of our team.
There is no reason for Slocum to get more touches than he’s getting. He’s the exact same size as Best/Vereen, and less explosive. He isn’t going to push the pile any more effectively than our current RB’s just because he had a couple of good rushes against Washington St. and CSU.
1) Well, first we know there is a reason to switch to more of a power back… our OL is decimated and our RBs are not getting wide open lanes, there will be contact. We need to get 3-4 yards regardless of good blocking.
2) Secondly, our staring back Jahvid has an elbow injury and an ankle injury that both Tedford and Jahvid acknowledged was affecting his cutting ability. Exact quotes at the end of Crawford’s podcast:
http://excusemeformyvoice.com/blog/podpress_trac/web/1007/0/pod-usc-2008.mp3
3) I know Tracy is the same size as the others… but I think he runs with more power (see my video)… even the coaches said so all of pre-season. Plus size does not mean power… take a look at Antolin (AZ) and Rodgers (ORst)… their balance and driving legs make them behave like power backs.
4) You can’t always trust what you see during practice. Let’s face it, we know tons of examples of players that don’t play well in practice but turn it on during live games. Why did McCants start for OrSt instead of Jaquizz Rodgers at the start of the year? Why did Grigsby start instead of Antolin? Damien Williams and Ronald Johnson are USC’s best WRs… then why did Turner, Hazelton and Ausberry get so much playing time last year? On our team… take a look at Hagan over Hampton/Conte… Cathouse over Hicks…Riley over Longshore… I can go on. We need to find out what Tracy’s got.
Bottom line: all good coaches make changes if things aren’t working… and JT is a GREAT coach and I believe he will give Tracy/Geurts more touches…especially since our OL is decimated and there won’t be open lanes… JT himself characterized Tracy as more of a power back during pre-season… now that we need one… I believe he will play Tracy more.
Do you need more proof than Maryland…1H of Colorado St…2H of ArizonaSt…3Q of Arizona…first 3 quarters of UCLA… all of Oregon and all of USC? We need a power running game and Tracy is worth a shot.

You’re definitely right that we need a power back to give the running game what Best/Vereen doesn’t. But Geurts is a bum! I’m just kidding, he went to my high school, maybe he could provide a short yardage option for the run game, I dunno. I just don’t see it coming from Slocum because of the similarities between him and Best/Vereen. And I would say size is a huge factor in running with power, obviously running style has some impact (see Lynch, Marshawn), but guys like Antolin and Rodgers are only “small” because they’re short – they’re still built stocky and thick, unlike our RB’s. Maybe next year our current RB commit can provide that for the offense. I guess I’m just really not that optimistic that we can fix the situation, the o-line injuries are killing us and our backs aren’t built to push the pile.
