Cal v. Oregon 11.1.08 Second Quarter Thread

This is the second quarter thread for the Cal v. Oregon 11.1.08 game.  Use this to discuss all second quarter action.  Before the third quarter starts a third quarter thread should arrive, so use that for all third quarter discussion.

Also, don't forget to vote in our California Golden Blogs Insta-Poll.

Also:  The CGB has been posting a lot lately.  To not be forgotten are other excellent posts: See Maharg shotgunning a beer; some more photos from the Cal game, and videos of the awesome marching band performance, see my post-game thoughts and overly generous grade to Riley; our discussion of the Top25, and see our once-per-month post by CBKWit. Also, Hydro's amazing analysis and a discussion regarding running up the score.  Plus, YouTube Thursday, and the Roundtable. And don't forget our Q+A with Addicted to Quack and a slight statistical rundown of the Ducks

That safety was nutty, as was that extra point block. It should be tied, but I’ll take it.

A little weak

But it’s a good makeup call.

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 1:29 PM PDT reply actions

Ugh. Rain playing havoc with snaps?

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 1:29 PM PDT reply actions

damn

big best run and red zone drive wasted.

by falseintellect on Nov 1, 2008 1:30 PM PDT reply actions

This is one of the wackiest games I’ve seen.

It's spelled "S-h-u-M-i-l-d-l-y-A-t-t-r-a-c-t-i-v-e"

I’m fully expecting a band to run out on the field again

by DougOLis on Nov 1, 2008 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions

hopefully

longshore can get it done. riley was looking good.. but that was a nice 4th down conversion

by falseintellect on Nov 1, 2008 1:31 PM PDT reply actions

That rain looks super heavy. I haven’t seen rain like that in Berkeley for 2 years

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Really? i see it every spring.

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Hrm, I remember the past 2 years being really dry. No hard rain. Maybe I just didn’t notice it.

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions

best video ever

by the time i came back from wtaching it, oregon was punting the ball

by elbarto83 on Nov 1, 2008 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I dont know why Longshore is the holder even when he is the QB on the field. Tedford should think about rotating him out when Longshore goes in. Remember the Romo debacle when he was starter/holder?

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 1:35 PM PDT reply actions

After reading A Few Seconds of Panic

it’s pretty apparent kickers are picky about who their holder is. They want someone who works best for them even if that means starting QB; I guess Tavechio is used to Nate.

by DougOLis on Nov 1, 2008 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

longshore is the holder, even when he's in as QB, i believe.

defense

is looking good now. getting comfortable

by falseintellect on Nov 1, 2008 1:37 PM PDT reply actions

Two themes developing for our bears today: Great defense and poor offense

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 1:37 PM PDT reply actions

I'm beginning to think

A 10 point lead in this game would be insurmountable.

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 1:38 PM PDT reply actions

a 10 point lead might just give me a heart attack in this game…

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions

by falseintellect on Nov 1, 2008 1:42 PM PDT reply actions

Nate and rain

Nate’s played in the rain, what, twice? USC and UW? Think that’ll help?

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 1:43 PM PDT reply actions

Announcer just said Longshore made a couple “pretty” throws. lol

by BoaltieBear on Nov 1, 2008 1:43 PM PDT reply actions

will the defense actually be better next year? What do you think?

LOSS
Linebackers
-Williams
-Follett
-Felder

Defensive Line
-Rulon Davis

GAIN W/ MORE EXPERIENCE:
2ndary
+Syd’Quan Thompson (He needs to work on his 40 time, so he’ll be back)
+Darian Hagan
+Sean Catthouse
+Marcus Ezeff

Linebackers
+Eddie Young
+Mike Mohammed

Defensive Line
+Tyson Alualu
+Cameron Jordan

by elbarto83 on Nov 1, 2008 1:43 PM PDT reply actions

better

The loss of linebackers is going to hurt but the rest of defense should be great

by DougOLis on Nov 1, 2008 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Debatable. Not something we want to think of right now.

The secondary will be heavily hyped, that’s for sure.

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Even with the better secondary, It will be tough for the Bears losing so much from the Linebacking Core. You lose the leadership of Felder and the fire of Follett.

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

i thnk our main weakness is the defensive line, so any improvement there will do wonders for our team. if you can generate good pressure from the line, the secondary can be way more opportunistic, generate more picks.

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Pass ruled caught inbounds

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 1:44 PM PDT reply actions

so apparently our receivers drop everything when it’s dry, but can catch when it’s pouring

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Yay!

Are there even 50k in the stadium?

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Yea, I know i opted to watch from home rather than sit in the rain today. I kind of regret it now, but at least im dry and I have food and beer.

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Bah. My lil’ sis probably didn’t go either. Meh. I dunno; you don’t know pain until you sit through a Cal loss in the rain. Needless to say, USC last year was disappointing. I imagine it was even worse for my friends who flew in from Texas.

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I stood through the USC game last year. That was mind-numbing.

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I stood through SC game too. Talk about painful.

by BoaltieBear on Nov 1, 2008 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I sat through USC last year and LOVED it. This year is a bit of a different circumstance though.

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions

the BART ride home sucked

by DougOLis on Nov 1, 2008 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

My poncho was worthless. I ended up using that yellow shirt for a turban to keep my head relatively dry.

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I didnt even bring a Poncho…I wore shorts, 2 t-shirts and a sweatshirt. I came back to my apartment about 10 lbs heavier because of my rain-soaked clothes.

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh wow, Oregon's LT?

That could be really bad for Masoli.

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 1:51 PM PDT reply actions

Was there an update on Riley’s status?

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 1:51 PM PDT reply actions

not officially, but it looks like he’s concussed

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Not sure if he was being serious, but the sideline reporter said something about him not knowing where he was.

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Man, there is so much rain on the field.

by BoaltieBear on Nov 1, 2008 1:54 PM PDT reply actions

It’s really sloshing out there.

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 1:54 PM PDT reply actions

Fuck, another fumble.

by BoaltieBear on Nov 1, 2008 1:55 PM PDT reply actions

Our D is going to get tired

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 1:55 PM PDT reply actions

now VEREEN

is fumbling!!

look how much more we’ve done on offense but 4 turnovers = 3 point lead.

by falseintellect on Nov 1, 2008 1:55 PM PDT reply actions

No. I think Deboeski is smaller than Vereen or Best. The way Oregon is hitting, I don’t think that’s a good idea. Slocum, maybe

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

masoli...

he’s definitely limping…

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 1:56 PM PDT reply actions

well that was a big hit

on vereen.. can he be blamed too much.

maybe slocum will get his first non garbage time carry

by falseintellect on Nov 1, 2008 1:57 PM PDT reply actions

Good play by our d-line here. way to hold strong

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 1:58 PM PDT reply actions

I wish I had a beer. Maybe I’ll pick some up at half time.

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Man, second circus game in a row. This is killing me.

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 1:58 PM PDT reply actions

Wow, thats the second team to try that and fail.

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 1:58 PM PDT reply actions

Wasn't as dumb as UCLA's try

The Bruins had to gain, what, 23 yards or something? That was stupid. This was a reasonable gamble, under the circumstances.

by bear88 on Nov 1, 2008 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

sloppy game...

if this game were in the SEC, people would be saying “THAT’S SEC DEFENSE BABY. DOMINANT.”

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 1:58 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Can’t we still say that?

It's spelled "S-h-u-M-i-l-d-l-y-A-t-t-r-a-c-t-i-v-e"

by JShufelt on Nov 1, 2008 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions

i had the same thought exactly. our ball carriers are taking shots at the end of the play.

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions

We can’t breath easy until they score

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions

big play..

and we still have possession?? huh

by falseintellect on Nov 1, 2008 2:03 PM PDT reply actions

Apparently turnovers don’t matter in this game.

It's spelled "S-h-u-M-i-l-d-l-y-A-t-t-r-a-c-t-i-v-e"

by JShufelt on Nov 1, 2008 2:03 PM PDT reply actions

Nate dropped and hit the ground with his knee. No bueno…

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 2:04 PM PDT reply actions

Ah man, Morrah needs to come back for that.

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 2:04 PM PDT reply actions

our offensive line is playing hard

going into this game, i was really worried about all our injuries at the OL. so far, they have done an admirable job of protecting Nate “Slightly less mobile than a statue” Longshore.

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 2:06 PM PDT reply actions

I’m starting to look forward to Oregon’s offensive series, thanks to our D.

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 2:08 PM PDT reply actions

That was a nasty grab on SQT

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 2:09 PM PDT reply actions

i think the horse collar rule only applies if you drag them to the ground with the horse collar. you are allowed to pull them and them let go before they hit.

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

how dark is it btw?

no lights setup today they said? is it really that dark? its hard to tell on TV

by falseintellect on Nov 1, 2008 2:10 PM PDT reply actions

Well, looking out the window is not that bad right now.

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions

oh come on

That should have been a facemask

by DougOLis on Nov 1, 2008 2:10 PM PDT reply actions

by the way, watching the stupid georgia tech game in NY on ABC

they’re at halftime, and the two highlights for the cal game was
1) riley pass to ross for touchdown
2) longshore incompletion to tucker and his helmet and the ball comes off instantaneously as he gets hit.

by elbarto83 on Nov 1, 2008 2:12 PM PDT reply actions

that seems to be a fair assessment

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I dunno, those kicks have been entertaining.

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions

will Best see the field again?

can the O score another point? i somehow doubt the final score for Oregon will be 6.

i dont think we need much adjustments at halftime but im sure their offense will make some so we better be ready.

by falseintellect on Nov 1, 2008 2:16 PM PDT reply actions

PICK TO INSIDE THE 5! WORRRRRRRELLLLLLLLLLLL!!

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 2:17 PM PDT reply actions

WORRELL!!

come on you could have made it the rest of the way

by falseintellect on Nov 1, 2008 2:18 PM PDT reply actions

Need a touchdown now

We need to take advantage of this IT.

by bear88 on Nov 1, 2008 2:18 PM PDT reply actions

On the 5 yd line…sweet

by BoaltieBear on Nov 1, 2008 2:18 PM PDT reply actions

They had the box stacked on that last play.

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

with the fumble runs?

by DougOLis on Nov 1, 2008 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

true

but, longshore has a propensity for throwing interceptions at times like these. pick your poison.

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Longshore throwing here? Tedford does that a lot…and i dont agree.

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 2:19 PM PDT reply actions

1st down is the best down to throw on in goalline situations.

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess I stand corrected.

by LostRenegade7 on Nov 1, 2008 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

we better get a touchdown

even this close a FG seems tough right now

by falseintellect on Nov 1, 2008 2:20 PM PDT reply actions

Need a pass now

Longshore rolling out isn’t a serious option

by bear88 on Nov 1, 2008 2:20 PM PDT reply actions

thank god!!!

oh man this streaming video has like 20 second delay

by elbarto83 on Nov 1, 2008 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

There you go

Smart, safe play – and it was executed well by Longshore and Boateng.

by bear88 on Nov 1, 2008 2:21 PM PDT reply actions

finally, some effing separation between the two teams

i'm here to clean your pool but i don't have a pool *bowchica bowow*

by ch0ster on Nov 1, 2008 2:22 PM PDT reply actions

did anyone else notice tedford's hat?

it looks like it’s black with an orange cal logo. halloween themed? or was it just me.

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 2:22 PM PDT reply actions

Could be the rain making it darker

by BleedinBlue on Nov 1, 2008 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

looks blue and gold to me

by DougOLis on Nov 1, 2008 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

that makes sense… he never struck me as the halloween type.

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions

10 point lead at halftime

Considering the conditions, I think this is optimal.

by BearsNecessity on Nov 1, 2008 2:25 PM PDT reply actions

i prefer a 100 point lead. still worried about longshore in the 4th
and what is with the commentators laughing at riley’s concussion?

by Wham on Nov 1, 2008 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

starting recievers..

Tucker, Boateng, Ross.. Young made a good catch too.

this is going to be a good group next year.
