Typical propaganda coming from the pro-Longshore faction. Twisted doesn’t even mention Riley’s and Longshore’s relative performances in the Armed Forces Bowl or Longshore’s MSU meltdown. What is he trying to hide?

There’s no reason to mention those games. Nate threw to the correct spot on the field every time and our silly receivers failed to run their routes properly. Riley’s ability to adjust for variations in the system is admirable, but Tedford wants a perfect cog at quarterback, even if our receivers are imperfect cogs.
Seriously though, let’s just wait for Arizona. Nate can silence the haters by winning against a solid defense on the road. Proud Rilerians like myself expect a poor performance from Nate which will inevitably bring about a Riley led comeback. This comeback will both reaffirm his status as golden boy and rehabilitate my infallible wisdom.
Nice article, by the way.

Very accurate
The better we do, the more paranoid our fanbase gets. We know that somewhere there will be a letdown but we don’t know when it will be and that drives us nuts. It seems like we’re always a “Lavelle Hawkins tripping at the 2-yard line at Arizona” or a “Kevin Riley decides to run right into Oregon State’s linebackers” or “four failed downs at the USC goal line to win” away from achieving that magical season.

May I ask who wrote this? Was it a collective effort by the blog? Or the work of one person perhaps? If so, who? Did you write it, Twist?
This is too profound an article to respond to in jest. I have to really think about this. I have been torn these past few days as to what the proper response to the current QB situation should be. So much so that I have been unable to post on my favorite blog, lol.

by CaliSeth on Oct 7, 2008 1:36 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Seth, you are 3 things:
1. Passionate
2. Insecure
3. Drunk
You are passionate, because its obvious when you get somebody you love you stick to them. Rodgers. Riley. Insecure, because when you think the things you love are not getting their full due your cartoonish rage emerges. FUCK FARVE. FUCK LONGSHORE. etc etc etc. And drunk, because, well, yknow, that one is fairly self-evident.
Now, 1 is great. Be passionate about things you love. And 3 is hilarious. But 2 is the cause of all of your angst. Don’t allow this insecurity to control you. Don’t allow this insecurity to demand certain things of others. Nobody owes you anything.
Be passionate about your Cal fandom. The fact that you are “struggling” to enjoy a 4-1 record and a solid victory over ASU means you have allowed your passion for Riley to get in the way of your passion for Cal. Nobody is trying to tell you passion for Riley is bad, but it might be time to get your priorities straight.

This article brings up an interesting question...
…that perhaps requires its own fanpost. I’m curious how long everybody around here has been a Cal fan. I’m guessing it’s a primarily youngish crowd since all you bloggers are recent grads (like myself). I’m curious if outlooks differ grealy between Old Blues and Tedford era fans, regarding expectations, disappointment, and what constitutes a sucessful season.
For the record, I feel like I straddle both eras. Essentially everybody in my family went to Cal and I went to my first Big Game at the age of 9 – and it was the last time I saw Cal beat Stanford until my last year of high school before going to Berkeley. My first half was the classic Cal fan experience (beating the ’furds = wild success!1) under Snyder, Gilbertson and Holmoe, and the 2nd half under Tedford. So I have a strange combo of the joy and contentedness of Old Blues experiencing Tedford level success, and the Young Blues yearning for more.
Surely somebody reading this majored in sociology and/or psychology- you’ve got yourself a hell of a senior thesis on your hands! Get cracking!

I entered Cal in 2006
A great year to be a fan. I started watching football in 2000 and college football in 2006. I’m the first one in my family to go to college in the US.
Yet I probably act like a bunch of Holmoe-itis because I have a talent for loving teams that love to disappoint even though on paper they should win all the games.
In other words, Go Bears!

I did not become a Cal fan until I came to Cal, in 2003.
To be honest, I will never “expect” a Rose Bowl. But if Tedford stays ad infinitum, the SAHPC gets built and stadium upgraded, I do not see how statistically we won’t be at least in the running every year. And being in the running every year means that one year, we just might get lucky enough to get there.

Cal fan since 2004. But I was a Bills fan before that (1993?), and they’re essentially a more devastating brand of disappointment. I’ll take my 8-4 seasons and run with them.

Great question
I’m an avid reader, but I don’t post much.
I’m class of ‘95 and a third generation Cal grad. I have a good friend (’97) who also comes from a Cal family. At the games, I sit next to a couple that’s been attending since the ’80’s. We all find it very interesting to see what Tedford era fans consider a “successful” season. I grew up thinking that winning Big Game was a winning record, even if that was the only win. On balance, I think us Sad Old Blues are so used to being disappointed, that we take the good for what it is. I’ve sat through a lot, culminating in the 1-10 season, and honestly, I’ve loved every minute of it ‘cause I love my Bears. (Except for that Mack Brown stunt. That was truly the most frustrating moment of my fandom.) Sometimes I wonder if people know what a blessing Tedford has been. There was a time when you could walk into the stadium and pretty much sit wherever you wanted. Even if we don’t make it to the Rose Bowl with Tedford, he has set up a program that CAN get there, which is more than we’ve had for so long.
I think us SOB’s take the long view. My family has never seen a win in the Rose Bowl. It’s one thing to hear your Father talk about it, but it’s another to hear it from your Grandfather. With a history like that, the long view is the only view to take. And, it’s why I think we would all much rather see a Rose Bowl win than a National Championship. Is that so bad? Is that so horrible?

Really? Seth, I should think your ability to destroy an argument would have little to nothing to do with the author of said argument. Otherwise, you’re simply attacking the author, and not their argument at all. Base politicians sink to this level; I know you can rise above that.
One of the reasons I like writing under an internet nom de plume is that the reader isn’t distracted by any personal baggage that I have as a person; in essence, my words — indeed, my entire argument — succeed or fail entirely on their merit. Don’t like me? Doesn’t matter. Think I’m unfairly biased? Such bias will come through in my writing, or it won’t.
Attack the argument, not the author, Seth. I know you can do it. I believe in you.

as a relatively new "old timer"
I’ve been a Cal fan since 97… just in time to witness the Holmoe-coust. Back then us fans suffered, and I mean SUFFERED. Imagine if every year you finished with a losing record AND lost to Stanfurd 7 freaking years in a row! Tedford truly has turned things around here in Strawberry canyon. Every year since he’s been here we’ve been in contention for a bowl, and considering that prior to him we only went to something like 3-4 bowl games over the span of 20 plus years, that’s an impressive acomplishment. I think most of the people who go out on a limb and aren’t happy with our team and feel like we are cursed etc etc… are a bye product of Tedford’s success since 2002. So while it is nice to have high expectations, lets not overlook the fact that we have a solid team YEAR in and YEAR out… and honestly when things are said and done… that is a beautiful thing. So while like everyone else I want Cal to go to the Rose Bowl, I was heart-broken when Texas leap frogged over us to land a BCS bid, I was upset at last year’s melt down… but I still have faith in Cal… and you know what? When we do finally make it to the Rose Bowl… it will be freaking sweet!

I actually have fonder memories of Gilby
I still haven’t forgiven Snyder for abandoning us for Tempe. After all the patience we showed, investing three absolutely horrid Troy Taylor years—including our first ass-kicking in Knoxville—he finally repaid us with two glorious years of Pawlawski, White, et al.. And then the bastard dumped us.
At least Gilby stuck around long enough for us to dump him. And he did manage—unlike Snyder—to win a couple Big Games and even pick up a nice bowl win with Dave Barr. And wasn’t Tony Gonzalez a Gilby recruit?
As for Mooch, all I remember from him was that stupid coat and tie. Without a cigar and fedora, that look just doesn’t work.

Thanks for the link
The story about Bockrath being the bad guy in all this is one I’ve heard before, and I suspect there’s a fair amount of truth to it. And from a rational mindset, I don’t truly begrudge Snyder leaving after his Citrus Bowl triumph any more than I begrudge Marshawn or Desean or ARod for entering the NFL after their junior years. But from a fanatically irrational fan’s point of view, it was a very tough pill to swallow. The timing of his departure couldn’t have been worse, and Snyder didn’t help his PR cause any when he arrived at Tempe making statements about how happy he was to be somewhere he could actually win a conference or even a national championship—suggesting that the Citrus Bowl was as good as it ever would get for the Bears. He may not have truly viewed Cal as a stepping stone, but he sure made it seem that way at the time through the media.
Regardless, it goes without saying that I wish him and his family well. Those Pawlawski-led teams of his remain my all-time favorites.

In case you wanted to know
You are correct. I started Cal in 2001 (1-10, but you all knew that) and was coming from the great fair-weather town of San Diego, so I was perfectly happy to acknowledge that football ’wasn’t our thing’. We were at the number 1 public university and it was okay to be bad at something. I had no hope, and that was okay! But then Tedford came, the religion started, and I started to believe. And now, once a year something terrible happens that makes me say “Why the HELL is my whole life wrapped up in college football?!?” and I start to emotionally back off. So it’s rather emotionally crushing and probably not healthy, since I have no control over the events on the field.
None the less, I buy season tickets, and at least 1 new Cal shirt every year, and go down to the LA game, and spend a lot of money on away game trips…. etc, etc. Hope is dangerous, but Glory is addictive.
