Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

You Naughty, Bad Cal...

Well, this is interesting... I caught this a little while ago.

As UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel was conducting his post-game press conference underneath Memorial Stadium, a Cal fan started shouting and cursing at Neuheisel. The fan was about 25 feet away, and got to within 8 to 10 feet (there was separation of a shoulder-high wall).

The fan was apparently upset Neuheisel burned his time outs in the final minute, after the game was decided.

I asked Neuheisel if he was bothered by Cal throwing for a 10-yard touchdown with 1:55 to play and coach Jeff Tedford's Bears ahead 34-13.

"No comment,'' he said. "I mean, I think Jeff's a good guy, a good coach. I don't worry about that."

Who do you guys think you are running up the score like that...only we can run up the score.

Shame on you. Bad Cal...can you do it again next year?!?!

We were actually going to do a post on this, I think. Whether people thought it was class-less or not to throw for that TD?

I can see arguments both ways. But I also think that Riley needs as much in-game experience as possible. The rest of our offense, too. We were clearly having some offensive problems in that game. So, I think it was beneficial for the team and not class-less.

Moreover, the fact that UCLA then scored 8 frigging seconds later shows that UCLA was not wholly impotent!

I say it’s classless to NOT go for the score, and I am classy so that is that. Next topic!

by zoonews on Oct 27, 2008 9:59 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree.

I posted this on BruinNation:

The ball was on the 8 with 2 minutes to go and Tedford ran it the first play. I definitely bleed Blue and Gold, a darker blue and a deeper gold, but I don’t think that was running up the score. Kneeling it might have been seen as disrespectful and with Brian Price on the field that would have been unwarranted disrespect.

Nah, no boat for me. Lots of time on the bay as a kid, though, my parents sail old wooden sailboats.

I (and the entire student section) wanted Cal to go for it after UCLA started burning timeouts

Give the chance, I say run up the score MORE against UCLA!

In other words, Go Bears!

Cal had 1 timeout left when the game ended.

Shoulda used that one with like 1 second left!

Can one ever really score too much against Ucla? I mean, is there ever a point to where you begin to think, “Okay, they’ve been humiliated enough, and I feel kind of sorry for them now.”

Of course not! I mean, it’s Ucl-freaking-a. You know, the whole “First to 100” thing. The whole attitude and arrogance and oh so tedious inferiority complex.

I doubt there are fans of any other Pac-10 school who would think that they should ever go easy on the babybruins. To paraphrase a quote from Life of Brian, “crucifiction’s too good for them!”

You get your chance at em in a month, Trojies :)

Go Bears!

Its a testament to the temperment of these UCLA fans that we are actually ON GOOD TERMS with the USC fans. It’s like being all “Hey, Japan, thanks for all those accolades about our big win over Germany!”

Tedford already makes serious dinero at Strawberry Canyon.

I have a hard time thinking he’d go anywhere. He’s not an NFL type coach having never played at that level but some NFL teams are desperate (Raiders) to try anything. But if he’s going anywhere he’d go for more money and probably on the West Coast. He could take on a rebuilding challenge again.

But as a cautionary tale look at Tyrone Willingham. He was a popular coach and a great fit at Stanford. Look at him now.

I can understand that the playaction TD was intended to give Riley practice, but I don’t know how useful the practice is if the defense is obviously keyed in on the run. Personally, I thought it was running up the score, but 1 TD does not a classless coach make.

by sec119 on Oct 26, 2008 9:00 PM PDT reply actions

try telling that to the posters at bruinsnation, whose normal spate of vitriol towards “kal” has become more…..vitriolic. those guys hate everything and everyone not associated with ucla. unbelievable.

by ch0ster on Oct 26, 2008 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions

it's more a question of weather we tell Riley to

not run the regular offense, or to play regularly.

likely the play action was the first audible when he reads the defense.

UCLA fans are such infants. Sorry our team was trying to take every possible opportunity to give meaningful reps to a struggling offense, in hopes of building up and carrying over some momentum for this weeks game. If their “team” wasn’t prepared to compete until the final whistle, that’s on them.
