DBD 10.22.08 What's The Deal With Campaign Finance Reform?

The other day, our esteem presidential candidates tried their hands at stand up comedy at this big fancy shmancy dinner.  Ya, not just fancy.  Shmancy!  They even wore white ties!

And the two candidates roasted each other.  You can easily find the videos on youtube, if you are so inclined.  Search for the Alfred Smith Dinner and either McCain or Obama.

The candidates had clearly top notch writers helping them on this.  Lord knows HOW many hours Bruce Villach spent writing this material!

So, it was on to them to deliver it well.  McCain actually did a pretty decent job.  But Obama was bad.  HILARIOUSLY bad.  The material was SO good that he was still funny, but you knew it could have been a billion times better.  The problem is Obama's always so serious speaking style.

Obama's speaking style seems to be this sort of avant guarde haiku.  He breaks everything down into little chunks of information, making it easier for Barack SixPack to understand what he's saying.

I'll tell you, Joe

The Plumber Under My

New Tax Plan Your

Fine Would Actually Be

Zero

And he brought this same choppy speaking style to an event that required more flow.  More flow!  We get bits like:

Where are those

greek columns that

I requested for my

speech

OR

I share the

ears of Alfred

E.

Neuman

See, he's too serious.  He has to be serious all the time, so when he tries to do comedy, even with world class material, it can fall flat.  That's why I could never run for president.  You have to be so serious ALL the time.  People come and tell you their sob stories and you have to pretend to care and tell them how you'll help them out.

People would come to me and be all "My grandmother was just evicted!  HALP!"  My only response would be "This is a problem, how?  Let me guess, it took them like 2 hearings to get her evicted.  Amateur hour.  Amateur hour!"

That might not go over well.  Lord knows we'd also have something like this:

Presidential Assistant:  "President T. Nathanial Hook, we are being attacked by the radical Jewish Russo-Chinese!  What do we do???"

President Hook:  "RELEASE THE STEGOSAURUS!  PERRY SHALL SAVE US!"

Assistant Dude:  "Sir, all Stegosauruses, Perry or otherwise, died in an asteroid related extinction millenia ago."

President Hook:  "Nailed.......it?"

Assistant:  "You've nailed NOTHING!"

So, clearly, Obama should leave the stand up to trained professionals.  You don't see me going to his place of business and knocking the health care plan of out his hands!

Plus, thanks to this website I can never EVER run for president.  The headlines would be like this:

"T. Nathanial Hook announces presidential campaign.  Allegedly watched Gossip Girl.  More on this breaking news at 11!"

"T. Nathanial Hook put his wedding during a Cal game.  Can you trust this man?"

Damn you, California Golden Blogs!  Ruining my dreams for the 2nd straight year.

PS Of course, one last reason I can't run for president?  HydroTech is a domestic terrorist.

Men's Water Polo has a trio of games this weekend:

Bear Bites

The No. 3-ranked Cal men's water polo team (11-4, 0-1), the defending 2006 and 2007 national champions, return to Spieker Aquatics Complex this weekend for three matches when the Golden Bears host No. 4 UCLA Saturday, Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. in an MPSF conference match and No. 13 Santa Clara at 12 p.m. and UC Santa Cruz at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19. In the Bears only other home match this season, they defeated Pacific, 16-4, on Oct. 4. Cal last defeated No. 11 UC Davis, 11-2, Saturday, Oct. 18 in Davis. Against the Aggies, seven different players scored, led by junior Mike Sample with three goals and sophomore goalie Jacob McIntosh with eight saves. Cal has now won five of its last six matches after suffering two losses at the NorCal Open and a loss in an MPSF match at Pepperdine; its first three match losing streak since 2004.

Field Hockey takes on Stanford in what I can only assume is called the Big Stick:

This Week
The No. 15 California field hockey team (11-3, 5-0 NorPac) hosts rival Stanford (4-9, 2-2 NorPac) in the Golden Bears' final home game of the season at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, at Maxwell Family Field. The Bears will also honor their 10 seniors prior to the non-conference game as part of Senior Day.

Cal will play its conference game against the Cardinal on Nov. 1 in Stanford, Calif.

Bears Steady in STX/NFHCA National Rankings
Cal remained at No. 15 in the latest STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. The Bears did garner 294 points this week compared to 242 last week.

Cal in the National Stats
Cal is ranked in the top 10 of several national statistical categories, including assists per game (3rd, 3.29), goals-against average (7th, 1.02), points per game (7th, 10.14), goals per game (8th, 3.43), scoring margin (8th, 2.25), scoring average (9th, 3.28), penalty corners per game (9th, 8.79), shutouts per game (11th, 0.36), winning percentage (13th, 0.786) and save percentage (0.766).

Individually, senior defender Rachel Moffitt ranks seventh in assists per game (0.93) and senior goalkeeper Kelly Knoche is eighth in GAA (1.09). Knoche is ranked in save percentage (17th, 0.767), senior midfielder/forward Ashley Glosz is ranked in goals per game (27th, 0.79) and points per game (44th, 1.71), senior forward Kellie York is 35th in assists per game (0.57) and senior midfielder/forward Andrea Lo is 48th in assists per game (0.50).

Carli Lloyd gets mad honors:

California volleyball sophomore setter Carli Lloyd was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week today by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The Bonsall, Calif. native also received Pac-10 Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. In addition, Lloyd was named the Cal Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week.

This is the third time an athlete from Cal has earned the Sports Imports/AVCA Division National Player of the Week award. The last Golden Bear to earn the award was Mia Jerkov on Oct. 12, 2003. Lloyd was also named Pac-10 Player of the Week to open the season Sept. 2, making her second award the 24th such honor for a Cal player. The last Bear to earn Pac-10 Player of the Week more than once in a season was also Jerkov in 2003.

Lloyd directed the Bears (ranked No. 5 at the time) to a 3-1 victory over then No. 4-ranked Stanford. It was Cal's first win at Stanford since Nov. 15, 1979. In the match, she scored her fourth double-double of the season, as she dished out 55 assists en route to leading the Bears to a .260 hitting percentage while also recording 12 digs. In addition, she had three blocks in the upset win. At 17-1, the Bears are off to their best start in program history and have matched a school record with a 7-0 streak to open Pac-10 play.

Women's soccer to host Arizona:

Cal Continues Conference Campaign
The No. 22 California women's soccer team (9-5-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the Pac-10) will take on Arizona State (7-4-3, 1-2-0 Pac-10) on Friday, Oct. 24 at 3:30 p.m. and Arizona (8-6, 1-2 in conference play) on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. The Golden Bears are currently in fourth place in the competitive Pac-10, which has four teams ranked in the top 25. Cal won last seasons' meetings with Arizona State (3-1 on Oct. 26) and Arizona (2-0 on Oct. 28).

Bears Suffer Defeat in the Northwest
Cal lost two close matches on last weekend's road trip to the state of Washington. The Bears' lone goal in Oct. 17's 2-1 loss to Washington State came from senior forward Valerie Barnes. Cal outshot the Cougars, 15-9, and earned 12 corner kicks to WSU's five. On Oct. 19, the Bears held a 2-1 lead before surrendering two Husky goals late in the second half. Barnes came through to get Cal's first score at the 23:13 mark. With the game tied, 1-1, the Bears earned an indirect kick after being fouled in the 68th minute. Sophomore defender/midfielder Megan Jesolva made the first touch and freshman midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir shot from the left side for her second goal of the year. The Huskies scored two goals to take the lead late in the game. The Bears worked for several solid shots on goal in the final 10 minutes, but the UW goalie made three stops in the second half to secure the 3-2 victory for Washington.

Okanes has info on Tedford's comments on the QB situation:

Tedford reiterated that Nate Longshore and Kevin Riley will once compete once again for the right to start Saturday. He said both players need to show improvement, although each was also hurt by dropped passes against Arizona.

“We had a lot of balls go off people’s hands,” Tedford said. “They weren’t perfect throws. We can improve on accuracy and we can improve on making some plays when the ball is around us.

I thought Nate did some real good things in the first half _ but not perfect, by any means. And I thought Kevin did a couple of good things when he was in there. But it also wasn’t perfect. We need to be more consistent at quarterback; both of them, not one of them.”

Tedford also said that Longshore’s pass that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Devin Ross was a bad decision.

“Obviously, the interception for a touchdown is a chance that you just can’t take,” he said. “If you feel like it’s close, just throw the ball out of bounds.”

While Tedford said both Longshore and Riley need to improve, he also said the receivers need to step up their game as well. Not only were there several dropped balls against Arizona, there were other plays that could have been made when a throw wasn’t perfect but still catchable.

“I think they have the ability to make the tough catch,” Tedford said. “Every now and then if the throw isn’t there because there is somebody in (the quarterback’s) face, you would hope we could come up with a play here or there. They have the ability to.”

New B-Ball recruit?

Keith Gallon, who has roots in the Bay Area and is rated as the No. 5 center prospect in the nation by at least two scouting services, has included Cal among his three college finalists, rivals.com reports. This would be a huge recruiting coup for new Bears coach Mike Montgomery, but the deal is far from done.

Gallon, a 6-foot-8, 290-pounder nicknamed “Tiny,” said Oklahoma, Mississippi State and Cal are still in the running for his services. He visited Oklahoma in late September and is scheduled to check out MSU this weekend.

Steve Smith, who coaches Gallon at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., said Cal is hoping to bring Gallon in for a visit over the Christmas holiday.

Cal players are optimistic:

BERKELEY — When the smoke finally cleared from Saturday night's disappointing loss at Arizona, Cal was able to look at the Pac-10 standings and see that there still isn't any other team ahead of them in the conference standings, at least in the loss column.

At 2-1 in the Pac-10 (4-2 overall), the Bears are one-half game behind four other one-loss teams — Arizona, USC, Oregon and Oregon State. Of the five one-loss teams in the conference, Cal has the most home games remaining (four). In other words, while Saturday's 42-27 setback wasn't such a fun thing, the Bears still have much to play for.

"We feel that we're going to win the Pac-10," Cal safety Marcus Ezeff said. "We're still in a good situation. We control our own destiny. We feel pretty confident we're going to win the Pac-10."

After Saturday's game against UCLA, Cal will play Oregon, USC, and Oregon State in consecutive weeks.

Very good news about Devon Kennard

in this article on Rivals.

Kennard has received offers from virtually every major program in the country, but has narrowed his list to four schools, USC, Arizona State, Texas and Cal. Because of how highly regarded he has become, all types of rumors have surfaced regarding his college choice. Kennard knows the talk that surrounds his choice, and insists that he is not silently committed or leaning anywhere.

“I am highly interested in Cal, a lot of people don’t know that,” Kennard explained. “Everybody thinks it’s just USC, ASU and Texas. I want people to know that I really like Cal.”

Cal does not have the hometown advantage of Arizona State or their reputation of USC or Texas, but Kennard raves about the Cal coaching staff and their influence on his recruitment.

He’s also looking forward to the chance to play immediately because he knows our seniors are graduating. Since he’s missing his senior season because of injury, I think this will come into play even more during recruiting process. He’ll be chomping at the bit to get on the field. And…

“Berkeley will be one of my first officials, as soon as I can figure out when I can fly,” Kennard said. “I am very high on SC and Cal. I like Texas a whole lot. When I come down to the official there they really need to show me. I am really focusing on the Pac-10. I need a feeling that is unreal for when I go down there (to Texas).”

In other words, it seems like $C and Cal are at the top. We’re recruiting him for a different position too.

Remember, this guy is even more highly touted than Tha1.

“This is the first interview I have with (a member of the Cal media) and I want to show that I am interested,” Kennard emphasized. “Get the Cal fans up there knowing that I really like it.”

Is this Cal's first 5-star recruit?

I’m thinking no, but I have no idea.

Best was 4 stars…not sure about THA1 or Beast Mode. Perhaps some lineman were 5-star guys?

The stars, of course, isn’t a perfect ranking system by any means…it’s the best that is out there now.

I guess Tosh Lupoi as D-line coach has helped with this particular recruit. He seems to really like Cal’s coaches.

UCLA is having some injury problems in the trenches:

ackle Jeff Baca hobbled off the UCLA practice field Tuesday, creating more turmoil for the Bruins’ offensive line.

Baca, a freshman who had settled in at left tackle, suffered what was called a strained hamstring during practice. He will be re-evaluated today, but there were concerns among coaches that he tore the left hamstring.
Defensive end Reginald Stokes will have surgery on his left knee for a torn meniscus. He is expected to be out at least three weeks.

That left the Bruins’ defensive line considerably thin.

Defensive end Tom Blake has an abdominal injury that may end his season. Defensive tackle Chase Moline is not expected to play Saturday because of back spasms.

“As long as we got bodies and guys in the system, we have to keep on coaching,” defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker said.

Alex Mack will have a big challenge this Saturday:

LOS ANGELES – When UCLA defensive tackle Brigham Harwell was at Pac-10 Media Day in late July, he strolled through the room chatting it up with the player representative of each school.

When it came time to meet Cal center Alex Mack, the two simply shook hands and Harwell said he’d see him on the field.

Having circled this date months ago, Harwell will finally get his chance to go head-to-head with arguably the nation’s best center on Saturday, when his Bruins roll into Cal and meet Mack and the Bears in a rivalry game at Memorial Stadium.

Bruins Running Back Kahlil Bell is limited by injury, but is going to play anyway. I hope we manage to control him better than that backup Arizona RB.

The balance UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel is weighing has tailback Kahlil Bell’s experience and running ability on one side, and the pain of Bell’s sprained left ankle on the other.

And Neuheisel acknowledges that even though his top running back’s production is suffering because of the injury he suffered in the season opener against Tennessee, he continues to play Bell because his value goes beyond his rushing statistics.

“He’s having a hard time getting away from anybody,” Neuheisel said. “Obviously, he’s going to take that much more of a pounding, but he still brings a lot to our football team, and his (pass) protection is valuable, and all that kind of stuff. He’s still important to us.”

Bell was UCLA’s leading returning rusher, averaging 5.6 yards per carry before tearing a knee ligament midway through last season. He recovered from that injury, but the ankle sprain continues to limit him.

Bell is UCLA’s second-leading rusher (187 yards) despite having more than twice the carries (71 to 32) as leading rusher Derrick Coleman (191 yards). Bell is averaging 2.6 yards per carry heading into Saturday’s contest at California, but leads the Bruins with five touchdowns.

Thinking a little more about the O-Line, I wonder how well Cal leverages its academics to land the best centers. Aren’t they supposed to be the smartest or second smartest people on the field? I think it’d be pretty interesting looking at the recruiting of centers, and what factors lead to their eventual success. iirc, Alex Mack wasn’t recruited that heavily.

Ted Miller responds to morons who want to run Tedford out of town

Ted Miller: Gahhhhhh!

Who stole Berkeley and made it into Clemson?

I just don’t get this stuff. “Hot seat” for Tedford? “Never lives up to its potential?” Tedford as “detrimental?”

If you guys keep writing this stuff, I’m going to climb a tree outside your window and refuse to leave. And I’ll play sitar music. Endlessly.

Hey, Washington fans, are you listening? Looks like a program wants to commit hari kari — any interest in this lousy coach Jeff Tedford?

Has Cal had some bad moments with Tedford over the past few years? Yes. Have there been moments when he’s opened himself up to fair criticism? Sure. Is his handling of the QB situation debatable? Without a doubt.

He’s not perfect. But he’s perfect for Cal.

Go to the bathroom. Flush the toilet.

That’s my sound effect for the Bears if you run Tedford off.

Snippet One from Today's Chronicle

“I thought Nate did some REAL GOOD THINGS in the first half, not perfect by any means, and I thought Kevin did A COUPLE OF GOOD THINGS when he was in there, by all means not perfect,” Tedford said. “We need to be more consistent at quarterback. Not one or the other, both of them.”

I’m growing tired of Tedford’s schtick. His choice of words make it clear that he prefers Nate over Kevin. Just come clean Tedford, Longshore is our man for the rest of the year. This isn’t a one time thing, as we all know, Tedford usually spins Longshore’s performance in a positive light and disses Reiley’s.

Just mind boggling to me.

As I stated before, this is not a one time occurrance. This same crap was going on

throughout the meltdown of last year, throughout off-season workouts, and has continued into this year.

As annoyed you must get at me for pointing out what I dislike about Tedford, I get just as annoyed at you for your unquestioned love for the guy and his boy Nate.

This situation is much like a baseball manager sticking to his over the hill closer instead of using the young up and comer because said established closer is the closer. Loyalty is a good thing, but blind loyalty will come back and bite you in the ass.

There are reasonable ways to criticize Longshore and there are reasonable ways to criticize Tedford. I’m not sure this is one of them.

Well, certainly, those inane things bring us all great joy, SwisherSweet. But we also do have in depth analysis of the situation. Last week I did a post with the specific numbers of Riley and Longshore, so we could see them free from perception. We saw some ways that Longshore was playing better and some ways that Riley was playing better.

We also discussed this in Hydro’s post-game post a few days back, talking about Longshore’s first half success compared to his second half failure, how much of this was poor WR play, how well Riley did or did not play given he was sort of thrown to the lions.

We have had a lot of “serious” analysis. We have also had a lot of “inane” “analysis.” I see space for both on this blog.

And to be fair, SwisherSweet, you started off this conversation by plucking a single Tedford quote and expressing deep concern because Tedford used the word “couple” as compared to “real.” That isn’t exactly going to create a strong level of in depth discussion.

Dinosaurs and Karl Dorrell’s mustache will only become inane after we’ve argued continuously about them for over a year (actually, it might take decades before Dorrell’s mustache becomes inane). With Nate vs. Kevin, I feel like I’ve been hearing the same arguments ever since the UCLA game of last year. Even after Riley has proven himself not to be the savior we expected and after Nate demonstrated that he probably won’t regain his 2006 form, we still hear the same arguments. I welcome Dinosaurs and Dorrell as something new to talk about (in addition to breaking down plays and learning from Professor HydroTech). Now if only Stego or Dorrell could both bring a “spark” to our offense and not stare down his receivers…

Hey Swish,

I actually agree with you about Riley over Longshore. We had a discussion about Riley vs. Longshore in yesterday’s DBD.

In response to this link, I said the following:

I can’t really disagree with this analysis . . .

It seems clear to me that Longshore is not the QB that is going to lead us to a Rose Bowl or a Rose Bowl victory. Although mathematically the Rose Bowl is still possible, I have come to the conclusion that this is a wasted season. Wasted b/c despite all the "reasoned expectations" (of an 8-4 year), I still hoped Cal would at least get to the Rose Bowl, knowing that a Nat. Champ. game was realistically impossible. I’m sorry but another Holiday Bowl is just not exciting.

And while a few weeks ago I was disappointed with Riley’s inability to consistently pass the ball and today still think Longshore has better starts than Riley, since it is a wasted season, JT might as well let Riley get the game experience that will help him improve for next season. In other words, much like a team in rebuilding mode, let the youngster play over the veteran who will be gone. It’s too bad JT can’t trade Longshore for some good young receivers.

My comment was meant as a joke about our current QB situation b/c it’s laughable to me. How many chances does Longshore get to make a destructive 4th quarter INT? I wasn’t mocking you, just making light of the situation.

Having cleared up my position, I disagree with your take on JT’s 2 comments regarding the QBs. After all, he did say: "We need to be more consistent at quarterback. Not one or the other, both of them."

I don’t really take those comments as “dissing” Riley. Remember, he’s speaking to reporters. He doesn’t have a prepared document in front of him that tells him what words to use exactly. “Real good things” can describe most of Longshore’s play in the first half… and a “couple of good things” accurately describes Riley’s play when his number was called. I don’t see how this is spinning things.

I don’t think Tedfrod has it in for Riley by any means. I think he just thinks Nate is the better QB at this point in their careers. Pretty simple.

We, as fans, can disagree, but I don’t think we can say he has some sort of bent against Riley (and why would he when he recruited him, tabbed him as the next QB, and went to him when Nate teetered in the UoA game…)

I don’t see that trend. I agree with Tedford’s assessment of Longshore’s play in the first half and Riley’s play in relief. And you did say that he was dissing Riley…

Since the QBs are getting equal reps in practice, what does Tedford have to come clean about? They compete for the job based on the weekly game plan and performance in practice. Simple. Last week, Okanes even said that Longshore looked sharper. I don’t think Tedford is hiding anything. You can take issue with this, but I can’t agree with you about Tedford having some hidden agenda,

Yeah, I don’t buy it either. Some examples of this abuse of poor poor Riley would go a long way. My theory is that Tedford simply has more confidence in Longshore than Riley in running the offense AS DESIGNED and that is the what is giving him the edge on starting.

Snippet Two from Today's Chronicle

“We’re not playing for the coming years,” Tedford said. “No, no way. This is about this year. This is about being productive right now and doing what we have to do to win games right now.”

I completely disagree with this approach. Go with Riley to see what we have for the upcoming years. He may not be better than Longshore, but he most definitely is not significantly worse. Why waste another season trotting Longshore out there. We are going to have to find out if Riley is the answer. What better time than this year? Coach Tedford I thought we learned from last year? Clearly, we did not.

by 33SwisherSweet on Oct 22, 2008 9:58 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I completely agree with this approach

A coach owes it to his seniors to put them in the best position to win this year. If Tedford thinks that Longshore does that, then go with Longshore.

Swish, Tedford has learned from last year. That’s why Longshore started after Riley was fairly flat for 3 straight games.

If I may so kindly suggest, I wrote a Conspiracy Theories post a few weeks ago, perhaps you should give it a ready if you haven’t already.

by HydroTech on Oct 22, 2008 10:56 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hydro I disagree

If player A is a senior and there is no substantial dropoff from using player B instead (who is a sophomore), and since we’re not going to realistically run the table and go to the Rose Bowl, then I think JT should put the ball in Riley’s hands and let him learn so that his learning is that much more advanced for next year, especially when the USC game might mean a chance at a BCS bowl.

by oaktownmario on Oct 22, 2008 10:59 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No way. Pros, you can play for the future. College you ALWAYS play for right now. There’s too much turnover and unpredictability to ease up on a season to plan for the next. The conference was briefly ours to grab this season, for example. We always have to be in the very best position to grab it. That’s what she said.

by zoonews on Oct 22, 2008 11:05 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I guess I just don't agree that that there is much of a dropoff

if any -by using Riley over Longshore. Longshore has had better starts to a game but that is almost wiped out by his terrible 4th quarters when he has to orchestrate a comeback. On the other hand, Riley has seemed more reliable late in games (notwithstanding his INT last week while trying to bail out Nate). If there is any dropoff by using Riley, to me it is negligible and therefore worth it to use Riley.

"You can have the alimony. But I want some pussy payments!" - Chris Rock

by oaktownmario on Oct 22, 2008 11:09 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes and no. I agree with you that they have proven to be pretty much interchangeable in terms of the game result up to this point. But how did we get to those results? My (assumed) Tedford assessment is that Longshore stuck to the plan while making mistakes (and thus 8-4 or something neighboring it is very likely) while Riley had to consistently wing it a bit (and thus anything is possible). Agree or disagree, but I think that is exactly what is going on. If we play Riley for future qb gains and he never really gets it going (which seems to me about as likely as his performance winning an extra game or two), what have we accomplished Riley-wise or program-wise? He’d be the new goat and we’d be the conference chokers. Cal Football 2009: It’s not going to be exactly like 2008, we swear!

by zoonews on Oct 22, 2008 11:35 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes, a friend of mine brought up a similar point. Playing Riley for the future banks a lot on the hopes that Riley does progress. If Longshore has regressed so much since pre-injury 2007, and Riley can’t clearly beat out Longshore this year, are we really sure Riley is going to get it going in 2009? Are we sure Riley himself, can get us to the Rose Bowl? Are we going to have a Riley vs. Mansion war next year???

I agree with you

But I don’t think we can give up just yet. I know we don’t “control our own destiny” or whatever right now, but we still have a chance. We also still have a chance at the Holiday Bowl which would be great for this team considering the circumstances. Until the Rose, Holiday, and Sun bowl are not achievable, I think Tedford shouldn’t begin “playing for next year.” Right now, we’re still alive, and Tedford owes it to the seniors to keep trying until we’re dead.

however I respect him and would never boo him, even though he stared at the receiver in the flat for 25 seconds.

I like RIley too but I can’t figure him out…is he the pin point accuracy guy with confidence I have heard about and sometimes see or is he the guy without confidence that struggles to find WRs at times and has erratic throws?

I want the QB that gives us the best chance to win games and get to the best bowl possible. I think that means Longshore with Riley in relief if Longshore starts playing for the other team. Riley will get two plus years to beat out Mansion or Bridgeport or Bridgeford or whoever the new Elite 11 QB is.

Forget Allison Stokke

Interview with our pole vaulting champ, Katie Morgan. The Youtube video is after the link.

n light of the recent National Championship Week, I decided to meet up with Katie Morgan and find out what she has been up to since winning the 2008 NCAA pole vault crown.

So far life has been pretty good for the senior; after winning the title she had some down time and even had the chance to head out to England to meet her brother.

Now she is back in school at Berkeley, hitting the books and doing some light offseason workouts.

Our interview actually took place right before Katie was to jump in the pool for a swim. She admittedly is not quite sure what to do once in the water, but nevertheless swimming keeps her off the feet and away from potentially injuring her troublesome knee.

Hey, we won an award!

In this week’s BlogPoll, we’re “Mr. Numb Existence”! Hooray for most boring ballot in the poll!

That Brian Cook guy sure is nice to us.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

That's it, next week I'm voting Cal #1

Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...

oh good

win us a Coulter/Krugman award right before we play Oregon. goodie.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

by ragnarok on Oct 22, 2008 1:57 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He should save it until after we play Oregon

So we can lose to USC 70-0, or as I like to call it, Manos, the Hands of Fate.

you've seen that movie too?

god that was an awful movie. thank god for MST3K.

by ragnarok on Oct 22, 2008 2:54 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Man, I loved that movie

Watched the non MST3K version, though I was watching with a bunch of friends and we were making basically the same jokes. I just loved that attendant/clerk/whatever guy who had his own theme music. I think that was the only music the whole movie.

Still happy over the fact that the Nets signed Ryan Anderson. Now if only they can sign Leon Powe after this year...

that award bothers me

sure, Krugman is liberal, but he’s an academic and he just won the freaking Nobel prize in economics. His beliefs seem to be grounded in reality (insomuch as you believe economics is a tangible science), whereas Coulter just spews whatever extreme crap can sell more books. Comparing a nobel laureate to whatever Ann Coulter is is insulting.

by CBKWit on Oct 22, 2008 3:27 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It’s an old name, and I think the BlogPoll is kinda stuck with it. I think even Brian Cook has admitted, when pressed, that Krugman is nowhere near the shameless homer that Ann Coulter is. Although, really, I can’t think of any Democrat (notice I didn’t say Liberal) who’s as shameless as Coulter is.

The point was to pick two names on opposite ends of the spectrum, so as not to insinuate that the BlogPoll had political leanings of any sort.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Clicking through a couple links got me to the drama (June 2008), the breathless dissection of the judge’s order, and finally to http://www.oaksarrestees.org. Have you guys seen this recently?

Though it might not have started as such, the struggle to save the Oak grove at Memorial Stadium has become a fight for free speech, tapping into our activist legacy: the Free Speech Movement.

heeeee. Nice spin. I know this is no longer relevant, but .. it’s so blatant. Tug at the heart strings!

First part of the article
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I want to have a short discussion on Oski, the Golden Bear who graces Cal games and events with his presence. If you have never seen Oski in person or in photograph form, I suggest you do a google image search; you’ll need an understanding of his physical appearance to understand my thesis at all.

How lazy are you?! Apparently there is this relativity of required work (lowest to highest):

by AndBears on Oct 22, 2008 3:49 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

there's only one comment

and it reads thus:

Disturbing Post

First off, I suppose I should add this disclaimer: I’m on the "wrong" side of 50, I haven’t spent a lot of time fixated on Oski’s antics at Cal games, and I don’t find his appearance particularly disturbing.

So perhaps I’m out of touch with the mainstream, but I would hope that most Bruins would find this post far more disturbing than Oski’s appearance. And I would also hope that most Bruins would be as equally appalled as I if our student section ever deemed it appropriate to sing or chant these lyrics in public.

So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Oh

that’s unfortunate. I asked because as a moderator, we have a sort of news feed which shows which of our site subscribers has been banned and by what blog. I didn’t see your name on the list, but perhaps the list only goes back a few weeks or months.

wow did we really stop recruiting austin just b/c of his height?!

Receiver Terrence Austin said he also tends to play with a bit more oomph against the Bears. Coach Jeff Tedford and his staff stopped recruiting him three years ago, saying they were looking for a taller receiver.

Cal recruited receiver Daniel Lofton instead of Austin. Lofton wound up transferring to Hawaii.

Austin’s first two college catches came at Cal two seasons ago and he acknowledged they were extra satisfying.

"I think I do get a little up for Cal," Austin said.

by ch0ster on Oct 22, 2008 9:53 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well, we already had three tiny receivers… what were we supposed to do? It’s sad when the combined weight of your wideouts is less than the weight of one O Lineman.

...nuh nuh nuh gone

If Longshore keeps overthrowing then we’ll need receivers 10 feet tall.
