Cal v. Arizona 10.18.08 4th Quarter Thread
Cal is taking on the Desert Storm! GO BEARS! Here is the Pre-Game Thread.
Since it's not a home game, some of us are near computers, so we don't have to put up all those threads at once. Plus, they have this new thing where you can schedule a post to publish at a certain time. So, we'll try that. Also, happy birthday to Yellow Fever!
That said, use this post to discuss the game's fourth quarter action. And don't forget to vote in our California Golden Blogs Insta-Poll! Democracy In Action, people!
If you missed some posts this week, here are a few to check out. Nate Longshore, doing a Peyton Manning? Blog Roundtable. Inside Cal's Numbers.

Well, I really hope we are all happy with our support for Nate. If we lose there are going to be a lot of uncomfortable questions. Stanford beat Arizona. This should not be happening. After a week of sobriety I am wavering in my commitment.

Someone kill me
I’m tired of following teams with great potential who ends up laying eggs when we shouldn’t. UA is up 42-27 on us in the 4th Q. Longshore with a idiotic pick six. Riley sucks balls.
Every team I happen to like ends up making me excited for the future only to turn around and make me an alcoholic.
At least this team is doing good. But god knows when they’ll go bi-polar

Or is next year truly one that we can look forward to?
DEFENSE
-Linebacker corp completely revamped
more experienced 2ndary (3 Thompson, hopefully he’ll work on his 40 yards this summer, + Hagan)
+Alualu and Cam Jordan
OFFENSE
-Mack, but….
Most of the offensive line coming back
+Riley +2 years years experience
+Boateng, Calvin, Jones with +1 yr experience

Cignetti
called an incredibly uninspired game. He is way too predictable and flat. This team needs some damn higher octane.
For those not watching, what’s the deal with Riley’s incompletions, bad passes, just trying to force them in?
He's the same as always
Floaty passes
Not much zip to it
Overshoots his recievers
And of course the rush
In other words, Go Bears!
This is the first time I have been genuinely annoyed with another poster to the point of physical agitation. Good job Roy!
Sorry
Half of it is the product of the deficit. I’ll give you that.
But some of his passes are just like the ones @ Wazzu or against CSU
In other words, Go Bears!
There is seemingly no reasoning with you. While you say Riley played terribly, was he the one who put the team in that position in the fourth quarter? Come on it’s so obvious that you really, really like Nate. Is he in one of your classes or something?
No you misunderstand me
He wasn’t.
Our D was
Longshore’s pick six was
Our O line was
OUR RECEIVERS DESERVE MOST OF THE BLAME
Yet I’m saying Riley isn’t god. My HE SUCKS comment is out of anger. Forgive me.
And no way in hell any football players will be taking my classes.

I think it has to do with “it’s a 15 point deficit and Arizona is play seven deep coverage”.

so who's to blame for the flat offense so far?
offensive coordinator? (there’s gotta be a reason why he can’t keep his job anywhere?)
defensive coordinator? (we can’t hold their 3rd string running back to less than 3 touchdowns?)
injuries? (guyton starting? best out by 3rd quarter? michael calvin suffering?)
LONGSHORE? (huge pick 6? overthrowing open receivers?… although his 2 tds were pretty brilliant)
receivers? (dropping SEVERAL passes? Boateng connecting with Longshore but making Riley look bad?)
… even Tedford? (for sticking with Longshore? bad game plan? not shooting the treesitters out himself?
Don't think you can pin it on one thing
It’s all contributing. But I do want to know why it all came to a head tonight?

Let's put this in perspective.
It’s a tough loss, but nowhere near as bad as the 2006 Arizona game. The line being set at pick’em let us know that both Cal and Arizona were on pretty equal footing, despite the ’Furd brainfart.
Consider:
Arizona has the more experienced offense.
Arizona played us really well even last year; we just had a crazy start.

If USC beats Arizona, we still control our own destiny.

by Cablinasian on Oct 18, 2008 10:37 PM PDT up reply actions
Arizona and OSU are driving the Pac-10, with OSU having the upper hand.
in honesty, the Pac-10 race is pretty wide open.
Half the Pac-10 has 1 conference loss. (USC, Arizona, Oregon State, Oregon, Cal)
Oregon needs USC to lose, USC needs Oregon State to lose, and Cal needs Arizona to lose. If that happens, and they win out, they smell roses.
Arizona and Oregon State control their own destiny – they win all their games, and they are in the Rose Bowl.
My question is – why are the two teams that lost to Stanford in control of their own destiny? Something is just wrong about that.
It's spelled "S-h-u-n-o-n-s-u-c-c-e-s-s"

Season is over
Riley is the future, but Nate is Tedford’s present.
Pride before winning, apparently….
Is Tedford the coach to take Cal to the next level
is he a great coach or just a good coach? He has been out coached by Stoops 2 of the last 3 years. Out coached by Harbaugh last year. Basically we have had one great year and a bunch of ok seasons under Tedford.
Riley at Oregon state has a better record vs USC. UCLA under mediocre coaches has had the better of us under Tedford. Is it time to look ahead?
Can Tedford Be Trusted?
I’m not ready to give up on him quite yet, but he consistently makes questionable decisions (nate, run run pass). We need to know why he is so stubborn. Any ideas?
Thank you Jeff
I am ****ed off . Because I knew you could not win in Arizona. Some day the light will go on. Maybe you will be coaching another team but not CAL. You have had your chance. It is not working out. Good Luck.
Oooh big words:
Tedford has completely emasculated the QB position
It just doesn’t matter who plays. The program is a paper lion.
In other words, Go Bears!
I know it gets under your skin and many others around here, but I see nothing wrong with asking those questions. I think Tedford made a poor decision waiting to bring Riley in until the 4th quarter. Perhaps it’s because I played for an egomaniac football coach in high school, but I believe in questioning all coaches. The same goes for authority figures.

I suppose this loss is all a matter of context. At this point, I’ll stop attaching any significance to the entire season and post-season implications. Instead, it’s time to narrow my perspective, and to try to enjoy one game at a time. It’s like watching an A’s game after they’ve been eliminated. This loss sucks balls if I’m worried about the Rose Bowl; it sucks a little less, and for not as long, if all I cared about was winning this one game. Let’s look ahead to the next game, against UCLA, which obviously I hope we win. And if we do, great game. And if we don’t, ah well, there’s the game after that. At the end of the day, these are still 21 year old man-childs, playing as hard as they can.

Honestly,
Arizona has a good team this year that should be frustrated with the two losses they’ve had. Stoops has done a good job recruiting, and it’s finally paying off.
The Arizona OL and 3rd string RB really put Cal off its guard … This was what killed us in my estimation.
You can’t help but wonder if the defense let all the praise from the last two games go to its head.

Uniforms
I think the new uniforms, and the constantly changing uniforms under Tedford, have been antithetical to the team unity he has tried to create by removing the names from the jerseys this year.
One of the fundamental problems with this team, at least in my mind, is that it has detached itself from Cal history by switching uniforms. Granted, Cal has had many uniforms over the years, and I think a quick review of the media guide would reveal multiple changes over the 70’s. Still, The Play, the game and moment for which the team is most famous for, took place in the straight up blue and gold unis that I still love. I would really love to see the team ditch these stupid “modern” Nike jerseys and go back to the Cal uniform that stayed basically unchanged between 1982 and up to the Tedford era.
This post was brought to you by post-game beer number three.
Clearly, Cal needs to wear all-gold. Look at what it did for Arizona!
