Cal v. Arizona 10.18.08 3rd Quarter Action
Cal is taking on the Desert Storm! GO BEARS! Here is the Pre-Game Thread.
Since it's not a home game, some of us are near computers, so we don't have to put up all those threads at once. Plus, they have this new thing where you can schedule a post to publish at a certain time. So, we'll try that. Also, happy birthday to yellow fever!
That said, use this post to discuss the game third quarter action. And don't forget to vote in our California Golden Blogs Insta-Poll! Democracy In Action, people!
If you missed some posts this week, here are a few to check out. Nate Longshore, doing a Peyton Manning? Blog Roundtable. Inside Cal's Numbers.

Nate Longshore pitched a great 5 innings, it'll be interesting if the middle relief can hold the lead
Oh. Wait. Wrong game.
Interesting that at the start, “Very Well” is the winner, but now “Moderately Well” has it.

GO TULSA and BALL STATE
SHOCK THE WORLD.

if ball state or tulsa goes undefeated, they should go to the NCG – no questions asked. Like seriously.

People may scoff, but that’d be an awesome game. Like 66-60 final awesome.

So I stopped watching after Arizona got their TD because I feared a heart attack
my heart was beating insanely. Now I see we’re up by 10. How good were the TDs?
I wish I could see a replay of Jet
In other words, Go Bears!
WTF You’re kidding?
The defense started to blitz and tackle, Nate made nice throws, Jahvid did his thing in the open.

Very good.
Now stop watching again, you were clearly the reason we were losing.

Toughen up RR. As painful as some of our losses have been, I’ve never stopped watching a game.

yes, it never works.
either we win or we don’t.
glad we seem to have gotten our heads out somewhat.

Attn Hydro:
Your first half grade of Longshore?
He got happy feet a few times, and his mechanics broke down… But definitely some nice throws

Hmmm...
overthrow…. almost lost fumble… a few slgihtly off passes…
some great passes… two absolutely great TD throws… avoided a few sacks…
I’d give him a solid B.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
he was ok.
on the 1/2back pass play he wisely threw the ball away, but would have been better if he looked for Morah on the crossing route since they read the play.
I agree with the nutters that he needs to be quicker about looking at additional reads (though he may be tossing some before the ball is snapped due to defensive alighnment).

It seems the only drop-off is in speed. He’s got great moves from what I’ve seen.

Red Sox wins, for anyone who cares
Tampa has Sunday Night Football and Game 7 tomorrow. I wonder which one won’t be sold out.
I think the key to winning this game
is more in the passing game rather than running game. UA was making a very strong effort early on to stop the run and it was working… then we started passing, and they become more balanced. Right now, it seems as if our WRs have been finding the seams and getting open more often than the OL has been consistently opening up holes for the RB.

If we had 5 Rileys protecting Nate, we'd complete all our passes
If we had 5 Rileys protecting Riley, we’d throw TDs on every play.

Follett smash!
He sacked Willie then said some choice words to an Arizona lineman. Lineman then pushed him.

Thta looked incomplete to me, whatd you all think?

How the hell are we letting Arizona's third string running back gash us.
Who the hell is this kid? We’re getting beaten by Arizona’s run game?
Dude, Hydro, you may know your shit, but it's the fact we rush 3 straight up the middle
D playcalling blew on that play

UA is daring us to pass. We have to pass – and pass well to win this game.

Right on the money.
Those seam/post routes are murdering us. I’m having flashbacks (not the good kind).
MCCLESKEY!!
You have to be kidding me, i don't care about results
I care about the process. If the process is a joke, results won’t happen consistently

WHAT JUST HAPPENED?
I DIDN’T WATCH THE GAME LIKE EVERYONE ASKED AND WE LET THEM SCORE 3 TDS!?

Yeah, this is your fault for giving up.

I do not understand those last two sequences at all. Conservative runs up the middle to all downfield passes. I just don’t get it.

Clearly a master plan to do in Kevin Riley.

That's what you get when you get the Niner's QB coach......
see Alex Smith, See trent dilfer. You couldn’t expect a Offensive Genious could you?
by 33SwisherSweet on Oct 18, 2008 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions
The defense is going to need to force a punt
or else Riley, even if he’s good, isn’t going to matter.
So I do think this is the right time to bring in Riley
Longshore made an insanely bad pick-6, then had an off target pass to cunningham, it appears as if he’s starting to get rattled and second guessing himself.
I think Longshore did solid up until his pick-6.
Now it appears as if he’s really mentally shaken. I think bringing in Riley now is the good call.
www.californiagoldenblogs.com
How does this affect Riley though?
I mean coming into a game that’s pretty rough at the moment…can’t be good for the ol’ stomach ulcer.
MCCLESKEY!!
Definitely. Wait till Riley has an insurmountable hole to climb out of with a nonexistent defense. Definitely the right time. Nate was playing really, really, really well. Even his interception wasn’t his fault. The receiver ran the wrong route. The defense played bad tonight. Nate is still our best option to win, no question about that.
re: longshore
he had good numbers but had a horrible approach. He consistently threw to his first read. Two plays typified this, the half back pass to nowhere and the audible pic 6.
by 33SwisherSweet on Oct 18, 2008 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions
If Tedford has learned anything about being Nate's coach for 5 years
then he will put Riley in during the 4th quarter. There is nothing suggesting that Nate will lead us out of this. Sure, he can, but I doubt he will.
ಠ_à²
defense gives up big plays if we continue to rush 3
by 33SwisherSweet on Oct 18, 2008 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm assuming Arizona is going to go to a conservative offense
We can shut them down. And we probably will.
