DBD 10.10.08 - What Goes Around Comes Around
Once upon a time there were two friends....
Then one friend beat out the other for the starting position but not really, cuz like a week later the Coach reneged, and the winner was the loser, and the loser was the winner.
But it's okay cuz Keller went to Nebraska and is having a jolly good time.
via stillfootball.files.wordpress.com
But Keller didn't forget how he got robbed of the job...
So he sent the pain train...

PAIN TRAIN WINS!!!
Sam Keller may not have got the starting job, but he got the girl - and that's all that matters.

Jeff Tedford is "curious" about the UW Head Coaching position?
Boise State's Chris Petersen, BYU's Bronco Mendenhall, Ball State's Brady Hoke and Wake Forest's Jim Grobe are other current head coaches whose names have been inserted into reasonable conversation. Hill, the coach at Fresno State, supposedly is interested in the job. California's Jeff Tedford is at least curious about it.
21 AP voters including kirk Herbstreit voted for Cal last week:
[click the link above]
USC isn't the only Pac-10 team to play freshmen:
The complete roll call of true freshmen used this season: UW 12, UCLA 11, Arizona State and USC 10, Arizona 9, California 8, Oregon, Stanford and Washington State 5, and Oregon State 4.
....
FOLLETT FALLOUT: If Arizona State quarterback Rudy Carpenter learned anything this past weekend at Cal, it was this -- never mouth off to an opposing linebacker. It's like digging spurs into a bull with a bad attitude.
Hey look, Cal leads the Pac in the turnover margin!
Cal +6
Hey look! Cal's rushing defense is just about as good as USC's!
USC - 2.44 yards per carry allowed
Cal - 2.49 yards per carry allowed
[Note from HydroTech: this may include sack yardage so it might not be entirely accurate... i'm too lazy to figure it out]
Hey Look! Cal's passing defense is 3rd best in the Pac-10 based on yards per attempt!
UA - 4.4 yards per attempt
USC - 5.1 yards per attempt
Cal - 5.8 yards per attempt
[Note from HydroTech: Anything below 6.0 yards per attempt is getting deeerrrn good]
Arizona - 88.73 QB rating allowed
Cal - 95.48 QB rating allowed

TOTAL BULLSHIT!!
Today’s a crazy day for me so I’m not going to comment further on anything… but this issue has been bothering me all morning…. I can’t stand ignorant people like this journalist slanging bullshit just to make his article more interesting.
1) If you call anyone’s agent… they’re going to tell you something that will help with future contract negotiations… IF there is a source (big if).. it’s Tedford’s agent and it’s just bullshit. It’s a cheap journalist trick.
2) He’s not short on cash… he made $2.4m last year, has two courtesy cars, country club membership, a phat house in Danville and a long term contract…and what appears to be two very happy sons, a happy wife and a happy dog… the fans love him, the city loves him, the school loves him and his compensation reflects that. This guy is saying Tedford would gonna get more love at UW?…
3) He get’s the SAHPC in 2010 and can truly recruit with it in 2009…. UW facilities are falling apart and they’re trying to get funding for a new stadium but no alum are stepping up and it looks like it’s not going to happen…. This guy is saying Tedford is going to go through the facilities fight ANOTHER TIME? Give me a break. After Tedford fought for the SAHPC all these years he’s telling us he’s not going to see it through now that it’s on track??
4) 2011 he gets his second retention bonus of an EXTRA $1.5M on top of his salary… AND he’s sleeping in his new office in the SAHPC… By then he probably get’s a new contract and a bump too.
5) he’s already making significantly more than Willingham… they would have to offer him in the $3.0M range for him to be even interested given how things are shaping up in Berkeley…. given the UW stadium problems.. I don’t see UW offering more than $1.6M…. this guy is suggesting UW is going to DOUBLE what they’re spending on a new coach when they can’t even get alum interested in a new stadium, which they desperately need?
Bottom line: UW is going through tons of problems right now with the team, recruiting and facilities… AND Tedford is considered a walking legend on our campus and our facilities seem to be on track now. The only year he’s doesn’t have something to ‘wait’ for is 2009… in 2010 he gets SAHPC and in 2011 he gets another $1.5M bonus!… You don’t think he’s going to wait around for that??? In 2011 he’s prob going to be the 2nd highest paid coach in the Pac10.
This article is bullshit and poorly researched. Kiffin is getting that job and everyone knows it. If there’s anything in Tedford’s contract that can be re-negotiated is his discretionary assistant coaches bonus pool… he gets $500K to tack on top of any bonuses an assistant coach is already getting… we should double that to $1M because Coach M prob should get $500K extra himself… Gregory and SImmons deserve some love as well. $500K for Tedford’s goodies bag is too small.

I’m sure they’re just using it as leverage for future contract negotiations. It’s a classic agent strategy.

I doubt this was even sourced through an agent or has any background research.
I don’t think Tedford’s agent would give any comment on an unopen position, for another school in the conference, that Cal still is going to play.
More likely, this is based around the wild (and totally made up) rumors that Tedford was interested in the UW job during the 2004 season. If he was (not) interested then, he must be interested now. No?
For a column, I just can’t see a writer putting any work into research at all, especially for such a throwaway line. I think they meant something more like, “Tedford should be interested.”

after last season I think Tedford’s stock has dropped enough to where he won’t be in consideration for top coaching jobs unless we go 10+ wins this season.

Q+A with Men’s Gymnastics Team:
Nic Blair
Events: FX, PH, V, PB, HB
Hometown: Kernersville, NC
High School: East Forsyth HS
CalBears.com: Why did you choose Cal?
NB: “I wanted a change from North Carolina. It’s quite exhilarating knowing home is over 3,000 miles away as well as attending the number one public school in the nation. I also had to continue training. I honestly do not know what I would do without gymnastics.”
CalBears.com: What has been the hardest, most surprising aspect about transitioning from high school to college?
NB: “The hardest thing came to me after my first midterm: being at the top of the class back home means nothing academically here at Berkeley; I must try even harder just to break the average standard.”

Yah, I think its Prop 1. It sounds good in practice, but it says itll cost 20 bil. Given all the problems with the economy and budget, you have to wonder now if its a good time to spend 20 bil on a bullet train from SF to LA.
We should just ride Zack Follett up and down. It’ll be a LOT cheaper!

okay, so
California ALWAYS gets loans to cover it’s bills in fall which will be paid off when tax revenue comes in. Just this time, no one is lending, EVEN to the state of California.
In the same way that the federal government will make a profit if it has a really long time to wait for that profit, so shall the state of California, including by increased income taxes from increased job-production.
Finally, this is a very workable system which has been successful in Europe for like 20 years and since the state of California is the same size as Italy (roughly) it makes sense for us to have SOME sort of reasonable public transit to cross it.
But I do think it will be hard to pass in this current state of economic crisis. We just have to do our own little ‘New Deal, Job Stimulation’. Really, can you imagine if people hadn’t voted for BART back in the day?!
