Tedford officially reopens the QB competition

Is Kevin Riley the second coming of Joe Ayoob?

Is Nate Longshore #6  the second coming of Nate Longshore #9?

We may never know. Earlier today Tedford officially reopened the qb competition between Kevin Riley and Nate Longshore.

Putting my faith in either one of these guys is like picking between Obama and McCain...I just know the one who wins is going to fail miserably.

As sad as it may sound I think Nate has out-played Kevin so far this year.

But when?

Somehow I think this Longshore's spot to lose. Riley has been throwing the ball very poorly. I remember last year when he came in during the 3rd quarter of the Oregon game I was disgusted by the way he threw the ball. Very lofty, wobbly passes with a lot of touch but not alot of zip.

It seems Riley has returned to throwing the ball that way.

Who knows? Hopefully we are blessed with a win this Saturday and Longshore doesn't throw 12 4th quarter interceptions and Riley doesn't underthrow 15 wide open receivers in one possession.

WHERE IS KYLE REED DAMIT!

Oh that's right......

Is Kevin Riley the second coming of Joe Ayoob?

I realize that in all probability this was an attempt to be humorous, at least I hope it was. Well, you failed, miserably. This entire situation reeks of favoritism on the part of Tedford, and it makes me nauseous. Never has Tedford put such a short leash on a QB, and now all of a sudden he is making disparaging remarks to the media about Kevin, and now possibly benching him? WTF? Why was this never done to Ayoob or Nate? Way to go coach! Give your young starting QB 16 pass attempts with a revolving door group of receivers and then bench his ass. Sounds like sound coaching to me! Disgusting nonsense. This isn’t over by a long shot!

Seth,

I’m not sure if your rambling deserves a coherent response, but here it is.

Yes, Tedford waited way too long to make a change with Ayoob and Nate. But shouldn’t we be happy that he is willing to change? I think maybe he was too loyal to these guys and this loyalty was a fault. I think now he realizes that he can’t let the QB situation get out of hand. For some reason Riley has not risen to the ocassion. Perhaps this will get him going or perhaps it will make Longshore that much better. In the end, I think he’s trying to avoid what happened last year and trying to put the team in the best position to win. Fortunately, the wins have been against weaker opponents that could not defend the run. Tedford realizes that such a luxury of weak opponents is basically gone and that the QBs need to start producing. If that means a QB competition (again) then I agree with it since Riley has been struggling. After all, JT is probably in a better position than us to make those decisions (even if he has erred in the past).

Notwithstanding logic and fact, Twisted is right. In 2005 we didn’t have Longshore because, oops, he twisted up his ankle. And for that matter, in the second half of 2007, he, oops, twisted up his ankle again.

But in 2008, we have Nate Longshore ready and able to throw those key interceptions, ready to step in it.

Of course my rambling deserves a response, and I applaud you for having the courage to do so.

However, I fundamentally disagree with you. By reopening the QB debate Tedford risks emotionally injuring Riley. Rather than lighting a fire under him, this merely serves as a warning to Riley that he must be perfect to stave of a Longshore coup. No. Tedford must declare Riley his unquestioned starter, and he must give him more passing attempts. 13 passes in the CSU game did nothing to get his confidence and experience level to the point we would all be comfortable with. Riley must start the ASU game, he simply must!

Emotionally injuring Riley?

R u serious?

We’re talking about college football players not kidergarteners. If Riley’s feelings are hurt JT can give him a hug. But Cal needs someone to consistently make passing plays and Riley hasn’t done that, yet. I think he can and will, but until he does, I think it’s fair/smart/good to at least publicly say the QB competition is open. And Riley didn’t get more pass attempts because as JT said “Kevin was missing too many open receivers.”

Could this have something to do with Best's injury?

I recall Tedford said something about how he thought the offense could use a spark. Before he was injured, it seemed Best was the leader of our offense because he was both a running back and a wide receiver when necessary. Now that our leading offensive player is out, perhaps Tedford thinks we need a reconstruction of the offense and that Nate may be better able to carry out this offense (which I assume relies more on passing than it did our first three games). It’s clear there are passing problems and that they are not all Riley’s fault, but I thought Best’s absence may also be a contributing factor to this decision.

Longshore to appear on Dancing With the Stars

Nate appeared a lot more nimble against Colorado State…..I think that’s the most mobility we’ve seen from him, ever. He actually threw on the run several times. Why do I find myself happy about that…..isn’t that his job?!

Having said that, visions of Longshore’s 4th quarter INT’s have burned a hole in my memory so deep that I continue to convulse every time I see him line up to put his hands between Mack’s legs.

while I think riley has more potential

upside. I don’t have a problem with longshore playing, even a lot.

part of it might be the coaching staff wanting to edge more towards doing what $c says thay are doing. “open competition for playing time all season” at every position. They ($c) don’t always do that; which is why they are doing the four headed tailback that’s not really working out.

Has anyone had a chance to review the osu/$c game for what exactly they were doing both offensively and defensively to control $c?

Longshore is now "the business-like" QB and Riley is the "jokester"?

Its funny that in the ESPN article, they mention that Riley is the comedian and Longshore is the professional veteran…..um, it was just last year that Longshore had blue hair and that GW Bush-like s***-eating grin on his face after every 4th quarter INT?

The Great Mormon One's 9-11 pose.

Mr. Jessica Simpson is to be taken seriously? Puhleeze.

I thought after his second consecutive interception against a weak MSU defense that at least that would put a stake in the heart of the QB controversy. I thought that the pro-Longshore personality cult would collectively crawl under rocks and avoid their mothers. Sadly, this did not happen.

Stlll, I particularly liked that second interception thrown into quadruple coverage for a quick pick six. He gets heavy style points if only for the numerology of it. I’m sure Jessica gets wet just watching the replay.

Longshore’s second interception wasn’t quite as good as his fourth quarter pick six against UCLA where the game was on the line, his second of three interceptions that sunny day. But it did show for all to see that he still has it. We were applauding him in our own special way up in section Q. I expect that if Longshore starts on Saturday that he’ll get a similar level of crowd support. I’ll certainly be cheering him on.

Stanfurd Delendum Est.

by Olsonist on Oct 1, 2008 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

We’ve already broken down that the pick six against UCLA was the fault of DeSean running the wrong route, rolling for an out rather than coming back for the pass. Hawkins did something similar on his interception; he didn’t look quite in sync on that play.

by BearsNecessity on Oct 1, 2008 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

First it was a bad play to call against cover-2. We agree on that. I remember seeing it from the other endzone and having to watch Verner run all the way with Longshore waddling after him.

Then it was a terrible throw, a wounded quail of a throw.

But DeSean was running the wrong route which Longshore didn’t pick up on. This actually goes back to the play selection. Game on the line, defense stacked up, let’s dial up something tricky.

Just to be clear, the score was CAL 21, UCLA 23, within a field goal to win, it was 3rd and 5 on the UCLA 30. Then it wasn’t.

Stanfurd Delendum Est.

by Olsonist on Oct 1, 2008 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was a bad call if it was designed to be a play to the outside, but I think the playcall was designed to run inwards. Notice how Hawkins is kind of setting a pick on the other d-back? Jackson was supposed to go to the inside, which is exactly how you attack the Cover 2 defense on the corners.

And I’m pretty sure Tedford wanted to get the 1st down. Kay had already hooked a field goal attempt of moderate range.

by BearsNecessity on Oct 1, 2008 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And Longshore had already thrown one pick.

Let’s see. DeSean is supposed to go to the inside rather than the outside. Fine. But I don’t see how Hawkins pick helps the play but in any case Longshore throws it to DeSean. His choices were:

 a) throw it to DeSean even though #1 was running the wrong route and doubled
 b) dump it and give his field goal kicker a chance to bail him out

This play has an eery resemblance to Riley’s OSU screwup.

Stanfurd Delendum Est.

by Olsonist on Oct 1, 2008 8:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The dump to Forsett was actually something I’d have encouraged, considering its success earlier in the game, but just from looking at the way the play unfolded Tedford called for a max protect package which had seven blocking and Forsett protecting from a blitz. Perhaps Nate should’ve waited a few more seconds for Forsett to get into the open flat, but he probably didn’t want the defense to break up the play or (worse) get a sack.

You also seem to think Longshore should’ve seen that DeSean was running the wrong route although DeSean did not cut until approximately the moment of release by Nate. It would be nice if Nate had the powers of foresight, but those powers are reserved for the Oracle.

He was also not doubled from any angle I see; although the safety was playing close cover, it looks like it was to prevent a deep ball. If DeSean had run an in he would have had an easy first down by the space the safety is ceding on the inside.

by BearsNecessity on Oct 1, 2008 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you about Forsett. Good idea.

“although the safety was playing close cover, it looks like it was to prevent a deep ball.” I disagree. The safety is covering close allowing the corner to gamble and cover even closer. Jackson is doubled. In fact based on the play, the safety is in perfect position to double both receivers.

First, he’s staring down Jackson and thereby telegraphing the play. Then he throws the ball to Jackson, not to where the play says Jackson will be, but to Jackson. At some point along here, it ceases to be Jackson’s fault.

Best I can tell, the throw is 3 seconds into the play and its a 20-25 yard toss into double coverage. It doesn’t look like Longshore read the coverage at all, Oracle or not. This is just a classic Longshore fourth quarter brain fart.
